“So I am assuming you want the good before the bad then?” Velahari questions raising an eyebrow at the other woman. Something about her made Velahari more cautious around her then others. The way she stood was… different, she had the stance of someone who had seen plenty of combat and was not afraid of more.

     ❝ Yes, Inquisitor, that would be preferable. ❞ Shifting just slightly, Fleur       wondered for a moment if her facade was working. Certainly, she knew       of the aura she gave off. It was something she couldn’t help anymore,       after so long it was second nature and often times her saving grace.

A chill shuddered down his spine, and his hand curled around Fleur’s in a painful squeeze. This was. Blind panic. There–here was someone he wanted to protect so, awfully, badly, and he took an unsteady gasp as though all of his breath had left him. It wheezed and bubbled around the iron taste of blood on his tongue.

What was–what? He stared at their joined hands and forced himself to loosen his grip. Focus past this lingering throbbing pain, and the singing whisper that soothed away all of his fears and offered him every wish. They should be going. Should have been going. First, back to his sorry excuse for a camp. “We should. Go. We should go.” He shook off the dread creeping, clouding his mind, grateful that his pounding heart could just drown it out. Mumbled around his sleeve, as if needing to cement it in his own mind. He couldn’t answer her question. 

A groan from one of the fallen Templars, the clink of mail and plate, spurred him into motion faster than the urgently pounding sensation in his head and he turned tail. Back to camp, scrambling for the few supplies he had zealously collected. Nothing there seemed important anymore, they just needed to be away. 

He hadn’t needed to escape from anything through the woods before, but he had travelled them. It should not have been so difficult to remember where they could hide for just a while longer. Anywhere but here. He didn’t dare let go of Fleur, or look for the Templars behind them, but picked a direction and fled.

      The pain, focus on the pain. Her hand being squeezed so acutely she       could feel each bone as they pressed up against each other, grating       almost. It took away from the ghostly hand that has gripped her heart,        forcing it to beat faster in an effort to be rid of it. Even her lungs had        betrayed her, not enough air with every fast and shallow breath.        Glancing around, her eyes looked around for anyone- anything that could        be the cause of what was going on. Perhaps someone had cast a spell,        she had read about some like this but there wasn’t anyone. Not unless they       were quite adept at hiding. 

      Maker, now they were running. Feet pounding against the earth, at least       now there was a reason she was breathless. Fleur wasn’t as fast as she       could have been, lagging behind with her arm almost being pulled from       its socket. But she wouldn’t let go of Chiral, never again. He felt real, the       only thing in focus and keeping her from collapsing.        Branches slapped against her once more as they ran, each leaving more       marks against her skin. How alike the first time she made her way through       the forest this was, even hissing in pain with struck repeatedly in the same       place. It was forming a pattern in her mind.        She was running from the Templars again, but her mind had turned        against her and there were abominations hidden with in the trees. Blood        beneath her feet, and bodies. Oh so many dead bodies, littering the path       behind them. Fleur couldn’t help it, she stumbled, thinking a tree root was       one of the fallen.        Had her hand been released as the ground rushed up to meet her, or had       she let go? It mattered little as she tried to choke out his name, little more       than a whimper. Was she dying? At least the made it a good distance from       where they had left the Templars and horrors behind. Chiral could be free,       what a thought, one of them could be free.        She just hoped he had the good sense to leave her where she dropped,        then he’d have a better chance. Fleur would do that last thing for him,        give him the extra minutes he might need.

“I’m a little curious. What was Circle life like for you?” Having grown up in Denerim’s alienage, she had a very narrow view of what the world outside was like. She had hardly even met elves from other alienages unless there was a marriage, let alone anyone from a Circle. 

        ❝ Good, I think. ❞ A thoughtful expression settling over her face as she         delved into her past memories. She had heard of other Circles, what went         on in there compared to her own. ❝ When I wasn’t in a cupboard for sneaking         out of the Tower, or actually out of the Tower, the Templars were nice to         me and so was the Grand Enchanter. It was a nice place to live, even if it did         sometimes feel like exile. ❞

It reminded him of something, this waiting. He’d seen something like it before. Jowan and Lily, when he’d run from the tower, taken advantage of everyone’s trust. For a long delirious moment he imagined Fleur sending him away. Surely it was better, even that way, than for her to return to the Circle.  Self-indulgent thoughts. He let the pain in his mouth distract him while he pushed the feelings down, cut through the red, murderous haze in his mind. Maker, it really hurt.

He should pay attention. Fleur was so afraid and he didn’t know how to make it stop or if he was any help at all anymore, didn’t dare to reach out to her. He choked as he drew breath to speak and only ended up spitting blood and flesh and now Fleur was worried about him, again. She didn’t seem to want to even look in the direction of the fallen Templars, but she took her phylactery and her staff. And she didn’t tell him to leave just yet.

Unable to tell her not to worry, he only shook his head in response and poured magic into the wound. It didn’t help with the bleeding, but eased some of the throbbing pain. He nearly forgot about it all together with relief when she reached for him again, asked him to stay. He had no idea where they should go, and he was happy enough in that moment, their fingers twined, that he didn’t care.

They should leave before the Templars came to. His gaze drifted over to his camp and the few belongings that he’d managed to scrounge so far. Nothing was irreplaceable there, but. Quickly, his mind supplied before he finally moved, gently pulled Fleur with him and wrapped the threadbare, makeshift blanket over her shoulders. And then stopped, uncertain suddenly of where to go.

     Time seemed move slower in the moment, like it sensed how anxious she       was and thought it beneficial for her to just breathe. Even that seemed like       a chore, with the air heavy in her lungs, it was just another thing that weighed       her down. The silence was just as bad, but for all her might she couldn’t fill       it with words, meaningful or not. Her words had already been spoken, now        any that would have remained, fled.       Though as soon as their fingers tangled together, Fleur felt grounded. The       ground beneath her feet was solid again, not thick sludge that threatened       to pull her under with all the heaviness she felt. Counting each step, it became       easier to calm her heart, still thudding away. As they stopped, it no longer       felt as though it would break through the confines of her rib cage.        A puzzled expression leaked onto her face, why had they stopped? The camp       wasn’t far from the fallen and surely this would be where they first would go.        No they couldn’t stay here long, so why did he feel the need to stop. Reaching       up, she pulled tighter the cloth, turning her face to Chirals. Searching for the       answer, if there even was one.       ❝ Chiral, what is it? ❞ Her voice just barely louder than a whisper, but she at       least hoped there was no tremble in her tone. Was there something else they       were missing, something that would hinder the way to safety? Questions sped       through her mind, each that led to unpleasant scenarios in her mind. Panic       once again took hold, and her breathing quickened. Maker, they needed to        leave.

“There is much word on the wardens.” Velahari replies looking over at the woman who had spoken. She had not expected anyone to come and ask her such a question out of the blue. It was strangely nice. “Would you like to hear the good or the bad first?”

      ❝ You say there is still good things spoken about them? ❞ Her brows         rising as the shock settles, could there still be some who think good         of them, had she been out new distance in so long. A slight shake of        her head, and her face returns to that of simple curiosity. ❝ Perhaps        the good to soften the blow of the bad then. ❞

Keeping her            expression guarded, Fleur lifted her head to watch the Inquisitor.           It’s just a simple question, she reminds herself, a simple question           that anyone could ask. ❝ I have- had friends with them, many           years ago, not that they’d remember me. Ah, nevermind, it was a           frivolous thought. There must be more for you to worry about. ❞

The presence of both an excited voice behind him and the jerk of his clothing brought Theo’s curious gaze downward to fall upon a little girl at his side. Her words immediately brought a brilliant grin to his face and a chuckle eventually bubbled up with it.

“Well thank you!” The Warden nodded, “Yours is very pretty, as well!”

Theo crouched to a knee in order to give the child the attention she deserved and let the pack at his back fall from his shoulder. “Unfortunately I don’t have ribbons for it, but I do haaave sooome~–” A prolonged flourish in his voice was drawn out as he rummaged through the bag. Quickly enough, he pulled out a bundle of wrapped daisies that had been plucked from a previously wandered field. “–Flowers! They’re just as nice, don’t you think?”

With that, he tucked the stem of one blossom atop the girl’s ear and held the rest of the meager bouquet out for her to freely take. “Here, you probably have better use for them than I do.”

         At his comment, she gave small curtsy in thanks, something her mother           had taught her. Now it seemed her manners were returning, slowly,           but at least it was better than never. Even her hands had shifted to sit behind          her back, as she tried to peer into his pack. Not having ribbons was a           shame but maybe he had something else that would look just as pretty in           someones hair.           A sound, a sort of loud squeak came from Fleur, her face lighting up even          further. As if it were even possible for her to outshine the sun. Wide eyed,          she flicked her gaze between the flowers and the nice man.  Puis-je avoir eux,         vraiment? She was so excited that it took her a moment, before realizing         what she had said.  ❝ Can I have them, truly? ❞         Reaching out slowly, just in case it was all just a cruel jest, she took the flowers         and pulled them in close to her chest. All but putting her face in them as she         took a deep breath in. Oh, they smelt so lovely, just as she thought.  ❝ Thank you,         so much, sir! They are very beautiful and I will look after them so well.  ❞

Turning her full attention back to the other,         she gave a solemn nod, hands tightly gripping her staff.          ❝ Yes, of course. What is it?❞

Cauthrien’s expressions were often very muted and difficult to read. Smiles were small, frowns were common and most of the time her emotions barely reached her face at all.

So it was difficult to tell what she meant when she said,

“I’ll admit to being surprised, I did not expect that to be a decision you would make.”

        Lifting her shoulders in a shrug, Fleur peered over at the knight, thinking          her choice was the most obvious thing in the world. Perhaps to her and those         who knew her it was, but to others. ❝ It wasn’t something to be taken lightly,         I had thought it over for some time. ❞         Part of her knew Alistair wouldn’t approve, even still it hurt when he walked          out on them. Wrapping her arms around her mid section, she held herself together         as she continued. ❝ I couldn’t kill him, it would just be more senseless violence.         Loghain is a good man, even if I don’t agree with everything he’s done. ❞
