I’m frank
I love love love wellness and beauty, and I love the role that Goop has had on those industries. But I really want to talk about how so many wellness and beauty brands alienate women of color. I know it’s a tough conversation to have, but I want to have it.
Women of color WANT to be involved in the wellness/beauty space, but so often we’re excluded or pushed out because of things like that. Small, inconsiderate actions that could easily have not happened. If I had to make a guess, I’d say it’s because companies like Goop don’t have a lot of POC working for them (or if they do, the POC obviously don’t feel cool speaking up). I genuinely don’t think Gwenyth Paltrow or the Goop team realizes that her wearing a bindi is appropriative, because I don’t think anyone’s had a conversation with them about the trauma brown women have to go through when they showcase their culture in places like America or the U.K. That’s fine, you don’t have to know every issue ever, but once those issues have been brought up to you, they need to be acknowledged and fixed.
So if someone from Goop is out there, get in touch with me. Let’s start a dialogue here, let’s make this shit productive! Don’t assume POC don’t want to be in the wellness spaces because you don’t see us there. Ask yourself why we aren’t there yet. A lot of wellness practices come from Asia, Africa, and South America. We care about these practices and we shouldn’t be alienated from wellness and beauty culture.
Being happy shouldnt be this hard
