โLove is sweetest beside the crypt.โ
Winona was born of the cobra lily of the valley beneath a super blue blood moon, though lilies of the valley were never meant to bloom so late into the dying year.
Malevolence emerged from the deadly pitcher nightshade beneath the blue moon of early winter.
Hysteria bloomed from the carnivorous fire lily beneath the blood moon of early spring.
In death, the girls became a trio.
The cobra lily consumes memories or grief
The deadly pitcher consumes devotion or trust
The carnivorous fire lily consumes emotion or affection
Together, they were death's favorite fairies.
Death planted no flowers more beautiful than the three girls.
They became legends. Myths whispered through rotting gardens and moonlit graveyards.
If flowers grow where they should not, do not draw near. The fairies have passed through, and they may still be lurking in the shadows.
If something sweet, like burnt caramel, lingers after midnight, Winona is near.
If rosewater stains your tongue in the early morning, stay quiet and stay still. Malevolence is watching.
And if the garden suddenly falls silent, Hysteria is feeding.
People left offerings so the fairies would not grow vengeful within the villages or graveyards.
Offerings for Hysteria were placed upon headstones.
Offerings for Malevolence were left beside the bird fountain.
Offerings for Winona rested within the abandoned greenhouse.
And for all three, gifts were left within the fairy circles.
Winona received pearls, gold, brownies, anything that glittered beneath the moonlight, and patches of fabric cut from beloved clothing.
Malevolence received paper and ink, blue crystals, stones given with good intent, and coffee grounds scattered around the fountainโs basin.
Hysteria was offered teacups filled with sweet tea, teeth shed during adolescence, sugared treats, and fallen cat whiskers.
Sometimes the offerings became sacrifices.
The sacrifices began after a string of bodies were discovered deep within the woods and along the graveyards.
Carnivorous plants and pale fungi bloomed from the dead as though the earth itself had claimed them.
Pitcher plants flowered between rib cages.
Mushrooms pushed through fingertips and split the skin beneath the nails.
Venus flytraps unfurled from hollowed torsos.
And lilies of the valley were always found resting above the head, delicate as funeral veils.
After that, the offerings became tradition.
And so did the sacrifices.
Every year beneath the blood moon, the village selected two prisoners to be offered to the fairies. More often than not, they chose men.
Over the years, the villagers had noticed a pattern: when a man guilty of cruelty or violence was given to the trio, the gardens remained quiet afterward. No strange blooms appeared within the graveyards. No bodies were discovered overtaken by vines and fungus.
The fairies seemed satisfied.
But when a woman was sacrificed, the silence never lasted long.
The flowers always returned.
