I love university
When Haiku is no longer just a poem
I graduated from a small international school located in a narrow ally of Sukhumvit 36. In high school, I have learned so many lessons such as civics, statistics, accounting, world history, and of course, English. I remembered one class where my teacher taught me about all types of poems. The lines, stanzas, rhyme, and rhythm; it was all confusing. There were sonnet, couplet, and my favorite, free verse. The most difficult one, for me, would be a haiku. Haiku structure consists of three lines and 5-7-5 syllables in each line. Pretty simple, right? But I just hate it.
I’m glad that all those years in high school were finally over. I started my new life at the Faculty of Journalism and Mass Communication, Thammasat university. I was doing fine until I saw one of my senior’s Facebook post complaining about ‘haiku’. One thought popped into my mind and I wondered, ‘do we still have to write a poem in the university?’ Just by thinking of it, chills run down my spine.
At long last, on the first day of my junior year in JM310 Editorial and Article Writing class taught by Ajarn Bruce, I truly understand which ‘haiku’ my senior was talking about. Instead of a poem, it is a website where the teacher assigns all the work to students. Back then, it was the first time I really appreciated haiku poem and wished it was just a poem.
In the first three weeks, all the assignments, all the quizzes and all the strict rules overwhelmed me. At the same time, I had Rub-Nong, a welcoming freshman camp, to take care of as well. I felt like I couldn’t breathe and if this still continue, I might have to choose between failing JM310 or throw away Rub-Nong.
When the week of Rub-Nong had arrived, I knew I had to do something about all the work Ajarn Bruce will be giving. I put a lot of effort in this event since I am the one responsible. I wanted to enjoy it fully without any worries about the university work.
I coped up all my courage and went straight to Ajarn Bruce to ask him for mercy on this week assignment. Since he has 22 strict rules for his class, I bet this talk won’t be easy.
Yet, I was wrong.
After explaining the situation to him, Ajarn Bruce smiled while packing his bag and said, “Okay. Could you email me the detail and I will consider about it?”
On that evening, all of the assignments due date were postponed to next Wednesday.
I then, realized that Ajarn Bruce is not as bad as I think and he’s not like what I heard from my seniors at all.
Ajarn Bruce is actually a funny, smart, and considerable teacher. He checked his student’s work delicately and even fixed all the grammar errors for them. His class rules might sound ridiculous but it actually helped students to have discipline. Learning with him could be tough but that’s the way life is supposed to be. It can’t always be beautiful and sunshine.
Through the whole semester, Ajarn Bruce’s class have taught me many things and changed me in many ways. I somehow felt like my writing has improved. Sometimes, I forgot to put on perfume before going out because I’m afraid my points will be deducted. I stopped buying jeans and T-shirts and bought trousers and short-sleeve shirt instead, so I can dress properly to attend the class. I began taking photos of everything I do so I could keep it as an evidence. I got a chance to interview a prisoner and stalk a post office employee. I’ve learned that we should never start a sentence using FANBOYS. I’ve learned to work with people I’ve never worked with and I actually made a good relationship with them.
Finally, I’ve learned that this class wasn’t terrible at all.
Even though, there are students complaining about the rules and all the work, I hope Ajarn Bruce will stay the same. I want my fellow juniors to have a chance to experience what I went through from his class. The only thing that I would like him to change is to go through the slides slower. I had a really hard time taking notes.
Today, I don’t regret learning with Ajarn Bruce since the only thing I regret this semester is the fact that I gained weight. I don’t regret that I didn’t write any poem either because I will end this article with a haiku.
This haiku is called JM310.
This class is the best Even though, it’s full of stress You must learn, I suggest
L-G-B-T-Q Q-I-P-2-S-A-A Wow, It’s really fun!
FANBOYS and grammar, All assignment? Get it done! Third year just begun
Wait, don’t run away Everything will be okay Trust me if you stay
You will get an A!
Thank you Ajarn Bruce :)

Stimulus Culture X Thai food
Stimulus diffusion is a culture trend spread but people in other places adapted the culture to fit their society. A best example for a stimulus culture would be McDonald in India where Hindus people don’t eat meat; therefore they change a meat burger into a veggie burger instead. Food and stimulus culture is a fascinating combination and when stimulus culture applies with Thai food, we could say that heaven really exist! I would like to dedicate my last blog post for JM204 class about 12 super mouthwatering Thai food that happened from stimulus culture that you couldn’t find it anywhere else.
1. KFC’s Wing Zap KFC is famous for their fried chicken but in Thailand they adapted KFC’s chicken by adding Thai’s spicy seasoning.
2. KFC’s green curry chicken rice bowl Another name for green curry is Gang Kiew Whan. It’s a new menu from KFC Thailand! Green curry fried rice serve with fried chicken and vegetable.
3. Another KFC’s spicy chicken rice bowl In Thai we called this menu ‘Kaow Yum Gai Zab’ it is a fried chicken mixed with special spicy sauce perfectly fit with jasmine rice.
4. McDonald’s chicken, pork and duck rice porridge This is a breakfast menu from McDonald. In Thai, another name for rice porridge is ‘Jok’ This menu is delicious and perfect for someone who needs breakfast in a rush hour. You can buy this menu starting from 10 p.m. until 11 a.m. at McDonald every branch in Thailand.
5. McDonald’s Patongko This is another breakfast menu from Mcdonald Thailand. Patongko or a deep-fried dough stick is a famous snack that Thai people eat it with soymilk. FYI, McDonald’s Patongko goes well with a cup of rice porridge!
6. McDonald’s amazing corn and pineapple pie! Did you know that Thailand is the only place that sells a corn pie and pineapple pie? Yes! That’s right corn pie and pineapple pie is super famous that many foreigners come to Thailand just to try this pie. If you don’t believe me try searching #콘파이 it is a hash-tag in Instagram that Korean people made to show how they love Thailand’s corn pie.
7. McDonald’s basil fried chicken, pork and beef Basil fried rice or what we called in Thai, Kaow Pud Grapao is a famous menu that could go with anything whether it’s a chicken, pork, beef, duck or fish but it is perfect if you eat it with McDonald’s fried chicken.
8. Mos Burger’s pork basil with sticky rice burger! Another basil fried rice menu from Mos Burger but sadly this menu stayed just for a while, I hope it will come back soon.
9. Chabuton’s Tom Yum Kung ramen Chabuton is a ramen restaurant that is very famous in Japan. All Chabuton branches in Thailand have a special Tom Yum Kung ramen menu. The ramen is served with big a shrimp that goes really well with spicy Tom Yum Kung soup and a ramen noodles.
10. Pizza Hut’s Tom Yum Kung In Thailand, there are Tom Yum Kung pizza flavor that the pizza is seasoned with Tom Yum Kung seasoning and have crispy shrimps and mushrooms as a topping.
11. Dairy Queen’s mango and sticky rice menu Dairy Queen is a tasty ice cream shop that has various ice cream menus whether it is a Blizzard, Sundae, Dilly bar (DQ’s ice cream stick) or mocha latte. Dairy Queen Thailand’s blizzard mango edition serves with sweet sticky rice or a cheesecake and for ice cream sundae, you can enjoy the ice cream with mango sauce and sticky rice. There is also a mango Dilly bar flavor too!
12. Swensen’s mango and durian ice cream Swensen’s Thailand special ice cream flavor of mango and durian is serve with optional sticky rice flavor; you can choose between a sweet white sticky rice or a green pandan sticky rice.
And there you have it, the 12 menus from a food stimulus culture in Thailand! I hope you enjoy reading my last blog for JM204 class and thank you for always being my good reader or listeners.

Freedom of Speech in Thailand
This week’s topic is going to be a bit serious but since the freedom of speech issue has been raised in JM204 class, I would like to discuss about it some more. We noticed that many countries in Asia including Thailand still don’t have freedom of expression. According to World Press Freedom (https://index.rsf.org/), out of 180 countries around the world, Thailand ranks 134, Cambodia ranks 139, Philippines ranks 141, Myanmar ranks 144, Malaysia ranks 147, Laos ranks 171 and Vietnam ranks 175. However, if you look at the bright side, Thailand seems to have the most freedom of expression among the ASEAN countries.
Despite all that, my point is I agree about the fact that Thailand has no freedom of speech at all. As a journalism student, and as I have read a few news about journalist in Thailand, I want to point out two reasons that will support why Thailand has no freedom of speech.
First, Thailand has the lese majeste law. The lese majeste law is a law that protects members of the monarchy from defamation, insults or threats. The law basically limits people from expressing his or her opinion towards the monarchy. It is true that every human being should not defame, insults or threaten anyone. It is not a good thing to do, everyone knows that but sometimes, some issues about the monarchy should be raised and discuss about it as well. I didn’t urge people it to defame, insults or threaten the monarchy or we all should do it, but there are also many countries that has the monarchy ruling their countries without the lese majeste law such as England. King Bhumibol Adulyadej, the king of Thailand, also said one thing about why people should be able to criticize the monarchy, he said, “I must also be criticized. I am not afraid if the criticism concerns what I do wrong, because then I know. Because if you say the king cannot be criticized, it means that the king is not human.”
Second is the case of Pravit Rojanaphruk, a journalist who was detained by the military from criticizing the government’s work. Pravit is well known for his anti-coup and anti-lese majeste law. He likes to tweet his opinion, which sometimes those opinion are very straightforward. The military sees Pravit as a threaten and said that his tweets could lead people into fight or could cause conflicts among people, the military took Pravit into detention and force him to sign a contract to stop talking or interfere with government’s work. From Pravit’s case, it shows us that if we talk or think against the military, we became the bad guys. After the coup, Thailand governing system has become more like dictatorship style rather than democracy. We aren’t allowed saying anything or even questioning things. The military is also suing journalist who reports the truth which it doesn’t make sense at all.
All in all, Thailand used to be a land of smile where we all live happily together, but now everything seems to be so complicated and difficult. I hope one day Thailand will improve.

Pop Culture x Pointless Inventions
Pop culture or popular culture is an activity, idea, product, or anything that many people accept or consume. Basically, pop culture is a practice or tradition that most people do! When something becomes a pop culture, it seems like there are that ‘thing’ everywhere. Assuming one product as a pop culture, when that product is so popular and everyone use it, there will be a duplicate of that product. For example, an iPad, when Apple first launched an iPad, it was so popular that almost everyone had an iPad. Then Samsung launched a tablet that is similar to iPad! After that, tablet computers seem to become a pop culture. Same with smartphones, when people commonly use a touch screen phone, every phone companies produce only a touch screen model.
Actually, I don’t really mind about the copy and paste process in pop culture because everything’s a copy of something somewhere. What I don’t understand is some useless inventions that were made from each pop culture. When I see those inventions I couldn’t stop asking myself why? Why in the world that this thing is necessary?
1. iPotty – iPotty is a potty that allows you to place your iPad for your child to play while pooping. When I first saw this product I felt so sad, just so sad that any parents who bought this can’t even teach their child how to use the potty properly. Instead, they gave the job to an iPad. Well done. It also shows how tablets or smartphone has become the 33rd organ of human. Even the everyday use product like the potty was invaded by the pop culture of tablets.
2. The Dipr – Everyone loves cookies especially Oreos! Lately, we often see a how to- dessert videos using Oreos such as Oreos cream cheese cake, Oreo s’mores, Oreo chocolate chips cookie and so on. Even you could make so many dessert using Oreos, the best way eating it is just plain Oreo, dipping in milk. Dipr is a spoon for dipping cookies into milk without dirtying your hand or loosing your cookie (it always falls into the bottom right?) I’d say I want to try using Dipr but instead of paying $6 for Dipr, I rather use my hand.
3. Breast shaper – I understand that beauty is important to everyone that is why there are many products that deal with beauty but this looking like a scratcher stick is actually a stick for shaping and making your boobs look better. Yes, it’s a boobs shaper. The picture will explain how to use it and it left me speechless… confused as well.
4. TV hat – Yes, you read it right. A TV hat. Just place your smartphone, pluck in your earphones, wear the TV hat and experience a movie theater like you never experienced it before! Amazing and unbelievable. I can’t believe that this product really exists. Imagine yourself sitting on a bus, wearing a TV hat… No, imagine yourself sitting next to a person using this hat. What do you think? Creepy? I think TV hat is a really creative product but it turns the consumers into a weirdo and won’t using it too much will cause short eye sight? Just wondering.
I will stop it here. These are examples of inventions that created from a pop culture (iPhone, iPad, smartphone, beauty trend and eating habits)
I didn’t say the inventors are wrong and it is their fault for inventing these ridiculous things. New things are good! It is good to bring new things into society but is that thing productive? Stop and think for a sec. Sometimes when I see these inventions I can’t help but question the inventors, ‘Does the inventor really want to help people or they just want to gain profit from the pop culture?’ Some inventions were create to make life easier and it was productive for example the washing machine, it save time and energy. Even though you have to pay more for the electronic bills but it is convenient.
Pop culture is temporary, same with things. But you can choose to make it worth remembering or not. If you invented a productive things, it could stay, it could be developed in the future, but if you invent things just to gain a profit from a temporary popular culture... think again!
Socialphobia
Yesterday was Valentine’s day but for me, it was just an ordinary Sunday ‘_’ I spent my time on the Internet, trying to find a perfect movie to watch. It was the day of love but I am single so I’m not in the mood of watching romantic movies and romantic genre is not my style either. A girl like me loves horror, mystery, blood splashing and thriller movies! So today I will be reviewing(?) a mystery film from South Korea called Socialphobia
Socialphobia is a story of a girl with a username ‘Rena’ she tweeted a mean message about the solider that committed suicide. Netizens was so angry at Rena and attack her on social media. Rena’s real identity including her home address was exposed on social media causing a bunch of angry men gather together to go to Rena house, intending to scare her and make her apologize but by the time the guys reach Rena’s house, the door was already opened and when they went inside, Rena was found dead (she hung herself). The police said Rena committed suicide but the guys believe that someone killed her. To prove that they were innocence and not responsible for Rena’s death, the guys investigate the case and searching for the real murderer.
After watching the movie: What I like about this movie is that they show the audiences how SNS is harmful to the users, not only harmful but also how it could affect us if we use it in the wrong way.
The two main characters, Jiwoong and Youngmin are studying their way to become a police officer but because they were involved in Rena’s death, they lose their chances and their dream job. The police found their twitter and saw the mean messages that Jiwoong sent to Rena. The situation is similar to Miss Thailand World 2014 winner named Fai. She won the Miss Thailand World contest but then Netizens began to search her twitter account and found impolite tweets. They said Fai is inappropriate and she don’t deserves to be the representative of Miss Thailand World. Fai had to gave up her position to other contestant because of her bad action on the SNS.
When Jiwoong and Youngmin’s classmate found out that these two were responsible for Rena’s death, bullying happens. This is the sad truth that bullying always happen on social media. For example, the case of Amanda Todd, a girl that posted a YouTube video about how she was bullied. She was blackmailed and there was a video of herself naked on webcam. Amanda Todd’s story was huge and it is a great example of bullying on both real life and on cyber.
Another thing about SNS I see in the movie is theft identity such as hackers and about privacy on the Internet. These things are what we have to be careful about because sometimes it is very hard to find the culprit. Once we shared our information online, we no longer have privacy so we must be very careful before posting anything. The SNS is a wideeee world with no boundaries. It is fast and easy to access so in order to use it, we have to think about the consequences as well.
All in all, I recommend you all to watch this movie, for me I would give it a 7.5/10 for entertainment because it’s kind of stressing me out... a lot of tension hehe but for the content of the movie I’d give 9/10 because the story is super duper realistic and gave us a good lesson in the end.
About me
“It’s just a prank bro”
I don’t know when did a prank trend, show, or video started, but as far as I remember, when I first watched a prank video was really funny and it was definitely ‘just a prank’ (It is harmless and funny). As time goes by, pranking seems to go more viral and as they got more and more popular, Prankers stepped up their pranks harder. When I watch prank videos these day I felt like it wasn’t a prank but it was a crime.
I would like you to watch this video in order to understand more about prank videos and what’s going on.
Here’s a video of Ryan Higa, a famous YouTuber, talking about prank videos on the Internet.
After watching the video, I couldn’t agree more with Ryan and I can’t help but search for more prank videos. I spent my time checking the pranks that Ryan mentioned and make jokes about and see the reaction from the people in those pranks. Sad to say that about 90% of people who has been pranked, wasn’t happy. Then I started to question about this prank trend.
What came into my mind after watching the videos are these two questions:
Should we set rules in pranking?
What’s the real meaning of ‘Prank’?
First of all, prank means a practical joke but in terms of ‘joke’ how far can we go for that joke? Because each of us has a different taste in entertaining, for example, when someone is telling a joke, some people may laugh but some may not, same with pranking, Prankers might see that stealing is funny, throwing bombs at people is funny but it is not for everyone. For someone who has experienced getting robbed or someone they know died from the bomb, these jokes are NOT FUNNY AT ALL.
This is what I’m talking about. Some jokes aren’t funny but it’s offensive and mean. What I wanted to say is that people has different taste, different humor and different thought so the term of prank is still vague.
This lead to the next question!
Should we set rules in pranking?
I would like to show more prank videos and keep in mind about this question while you are watching.
The first video is about two guys asking random African-American people question “Can I give you a punch?” which is plainly stupid. At 2:25 a black guy in a red T-shirt actually pulled out a knife!! I don’t really see the point of this prank. It seems like these two guys just ruining people’s day by asking stupid question and pissing them off. I think they deserved what they got.
Next, this is the example of stealing prank. This guy stole other people’s food from his or her cart until at 2:04 when the prank gone wrong. Clearly the guy in a black T-shirt didn’t like what’s going on and one thing he said that I really like is, “It’s all fun and games till someone gets hurt” He’s right! I hope this boy learned his lesson.
Go to 2:34 This prank is a milk gallon smash prank, well, it is the most harmless one of all three pranks I showed but listen to what the guy is saying here, even though the prank is kind of funny these kids are acting like a jerk.
Back to the question! Should we set rules in pranking?
For me, I would say not rules but there should be ethics in pranking. (I sound so old right now 3_3)
Pranking should be fun and harmless. It should not hurt other people physically and mentally! This mean walking around giving other people bad jokes or asking them “Can I give you a punch” is not okay! You’re not only hurting their feelings but also ruining their day. You are pissing them off and by pissing them off can lead to a fight.
When the pranks gone too far, admit the consequences and don’t say “It’s just a prank bro” When you are brave enough to make stupid pranks, be brave enough to accept what will come after as well.
Try to find good reason or a meaningful point in pranking that is not just to entertain. For example, make a prank only for a special occasion instead.
There is a very good prank YouTube channel called Prank it Forward, it is a channel that make positive prank to people. I think it is a very useful and wise way of pranking. I even donated for them once after watching a few of their pranks, I think it was really good. You can check it out at http://sites.break.com/prank-it-fwd/
All in all, apart from the seriousness, prank videos are funny and it is fine to entertain others but at least think about what is appropriate and inappropriate. Try not to think of it as a competition but think about it as something that can give others happiness. Focus more about the action and the outcome as well.
I hope to see more positive and harmless prank videos in the future.
