The first lesson I learned was never to wait for a man’s rescue. History is written by the s u r v i v o r s, and I am surely that.
Had the other woman been anything less than a literal queen, the Inquisitor would have insisted anything worth saying could be said in the open. There was little more she disliked than having to keep secrets or be anything less than open about her affairs.
But Merilin was no monarch, and Anora was not a woman to take no for an answer. She bowed graciously (curtsying always felt ridiculous when not wearing a skirt, no matter what Josephine said), and gestured an arm to a side door leading outdoors.
“Will the gazebo in our herb garden suffice, Your Majesty?” It was never ‘my’ Inquisition, or ‘my’ garden, or ‘my’ accomplishments, but everybody’s blood, sweat, and tears that went into everything they had to offer. Merilin never let herself, nor any visiting delegates, forget that fact.
[ ♕ ] — “Wherever you find yourself most comfortable, Inquisitor.” Being a guest of the Inquisition was... interesting, to say the least. Merilin seemed a capable enough warrior, but it seemed to Anora that she was not yet comfortable in her role as a leader, a figurehead. The Queen could imagine that feeling well, recalling it from her early days upon her own throne.
“I wanted to speak to you about provisions and supplies for your troops. It’s said that an army marches on it’s stomach, and Ferelden has had a bountiful enough harvest that the Bannorn have agreed that we can increase our contribution to your forces.”
“You are a vision as always, your Majesty.” Her gloved hands are still cold from the day’s ride, but still she reached up to cover the Queen’s hands gently, stretching just enough to return the delicate kiss with a smile. Frankly, she was grateful their arrival was delayed, she didn’t know if she could bare playing the Warden-Commander for all and sundry while Anora stood right there. “You’ve been well, I hope”
[ ♕ ] — “Well enough, though I would say better even than that, now that you’ve arrived.” The bond between them could not be more plain, or more intimate. It would take more than cold hands and well traveled-in leathers to keep the Queen from bestowing her affection. “I was beginning to wonder if I’d see you tonight at all, did the road give you trouble?”
“At least I did not have to speak. I would take standing still for hours over entertaining.” These days Cauthrien dropped the honourifics owed to Anora’s title when they were truly alone. She was not sure exactly why, some feeling of closeness due to her new position perhaps?
“Which you did expertly, as ever.”
The Knight moved to stand behind Anora’s chair, watching with some interest and appreciation as she carefully divested herself of the treasury resting on her head and shoulders. Cauthrien’s hands reached and hovered over the last few clasps and pins around Anora’s neck and in her hair.
“May I?” She asked gently, half concerned that her Queen’s tired hands might do some damage.
[ ♕ ] — Anora set down her crown, a heavy thing of bronze and gold sculpted into a proud and snarling Mabari, and gratefully bows her head. A stiff neck was the least of her worries, but the offer of help from Cauthrien was more appreciated than she could say.
“You are more than welcome to help, my dear.” The affection was clear in her voice, as was the relief at the loosening of the pins in her hair. “Though I’m sure that you have other matters to attend to aside from me-- like yourself, perhaps?”

I kept thinking how marvelous it would be if I could somehow tear my heart, which felt so heavy, out of my chest.
