dennis knows mac loves him and he hates him for it because it’s not what he wants. dennis wants a detached, distant, no-intimacy-required worship but the problem here is that dennis is not a god and mac is truly too stubborn to bow at his feet so it’s simply not going to happen and dennis hates mac for it. im usually reticent to take whatever dennis says at face value because he is wont to lie to himself just as much as he lies to others and has absolutely never interrogated any internal emotion, impulse, or desire in his life but i believe him when he says that he hates mac. he hates mac because mac is too stupid to realize dennis is habitually manipulating him. he hates mac because mac is too stubborn to bend exactly into the shape that dennis deems acceptable. he hates mac because mac is too stupid to hate dennis back, hate him in a way that matters, and he hates mac because hate has all the obsession and passion of love but without any of the messy gross vulnerability and emotional intimacy. dennis is simply not interested in loving mac in a way that mac wants and likewise mac is gonna continue to love dennis in the stubborn, opportunistic ways he tends to and “deny” dennis the “love” he thinks he deserves. they’re doomed. they’re almost irreparably doomed. they’re they world’s worst soulmates.
