“okay, but how am i to blame for the first year completely losing it over something as silly as that of all things?”
“it wouldn’t happen to have anything to do with you, would it?”
HI YEAH MY NAME'S OLLY AND I'M GOING TO FIGHT @STAFF YEAH THANKS
Good Vibrations - The Beach Boys (Single, 1966)
‘ madam pomfrey said i have to stay here for a few days. she said she’d break my wand if i tried fixing my leg myself. ’ emmeline said, making a grimace. she didn’t like staying in bed and she certainly didn’t like the medicine she was being given.
‘ i mean, i tried fixing my arm, and look how that turned out, ’ not very well. but mary was impatient and mary was steadfast, so messing up her arm even more hadn’t seemed like a big deal until pomfrey had turned it into one. ‘ so i’ll help her if you even try to leave this ward, vance. ’
“mary.” lily said softly, regretting the harsh way she had spoken to her friend now that she knew it was actually her friend. but no apologies were spoken despite the regret that she felt. “please tell me you’re okay.” she said, and it wasn’t a request as much as it was an order. lily needed to hear that her friend was safe.
“hey, lils.” voice gentle, the girl leaned her back against the closest counter, searching for any support it could give her. at this point, her knees felt like they were about to give; but mary stuck it out anyway, pausing for a moment before answering. “i’m fine. see? even had a shower and all.” she’s not fine and she knows it. “you’re alright too. we’re okay, yeah?”
get a grip, james potter. keep it t o g e t h e r. bury this deep, where you never touch it again. find your friends, and then try to return things back to normal. even though things were never normal. even though the blue eagle that had been painted on your face was now smudged all over your cheek with your own blood mixed in. just don’t think about it. you’ll be fine if you pretend things aren’t weird. like the school wasn’t on lockdown and students who weren’t in their dorms were either lucky and had a hiding place where they wouldn’t get caught or were…just really, really not so lucky.
james felt himself breathe out when he looked up from his feet to find mary. “hey back,” he offered as he walked over to the couch, dropping theatrically onto the side opposite her. “here and there. everywhere. no where at all. gotta keep my mystery alive, macdonald.”
maybe pretending was what mary did best nowadays. coming out of there, the last thing she wanted to do was smile. she’d left the quidditch pitch battered and bruised and bloodied, witnessing bloodshed she’d thought she’d left behind in the muggle world. but evidently not, it had been proven; since the attack on hogsmeade months before, she’d almost been able to try and forget, to plait flowers in her curls and drink too much coffee and ask too many ridiculous questions during transfiguration. she’d convinced herself, and certainly everyone else, that mary macdonald was perfectly fine, thanks very much.
“god, potter,” forcing the shakiness from her voice, the smaller girl ran a hand through her hair. “always late, aren’t you?” she turned to look at him, relief welling up somewhere within her ribcage. “james mystery potter. it’s got a ring to it, you know.”
lily had escaped down to the kitchens once the all clear had been given. every part of her that had been focused on protecting others slipping away. instead it was all replaced by emotions she wished she was better at suppressing. so the kitchens was the natural escape and now she sat curled up in her usual seat on the counter with an extra large mug of hot cocoa. the door swung open and footsteps that were too heavy to belong to any of the elves approached. “seat’s taken, all of them.” she said without lifting her gaze from the mug she held in her lap.
her friends had been the first thing on mary’s mind. she could have cared less about her own safety, but amongst the scrimmage, she’d desperately sought any trace of familiar faces; luke, emm, james, anyone. mary had left the battle with a broken arm and hair sticky with blood and nails caked with dirt, and since then, she’d tried to fix herself. she’d tried to heal her bones herself, gotten changed and stood in the scalding shower for much longer than she should have, and now that she was finally beginning to feel even remotely more like old mary, she had more important things on her mind. “i don’t want to sit.” her voice was quiet as she approached her friend.
if mary’s ever been a bit of a mess, it’s now more than ever. she’d been at the match, cheering emm on from the sidelines and face painted in blue stripes when the death eaters had attacked, and immediately, she’d plunged herself into the middle of it. and now, it was hours later and the bloodshed had finally stopped; she’d come out of it fairly intact, with a broken arm and a few nasty looking cuts that just wouldn’t stop bleeding, but she’d haphazardly fixed them herself — madam pomfrey had much worse injuries to deal with, she reckoned. sitting in the common room, it was uncharacteristically quiet, and at the sound of footsteps she glanced up, spotting a familiar face. “hey,” the girl breathed a quiet sigh of relief from her spot on the sofa, legs curled up beneath her. “i was wondering where you were.” she hadn’t wanted to assume the worst.
