How do I write an ensemble getting to know one another without confusing the reader about who is who?
I think a lot of this depends on how many people you introduce at the same time to each other and to the reader and also from what point of view your story is written. But I try to generalize it here.
Introducing a group of characters
who are the main characters? Who are secondary characters and which characters basically act as extras?
maybe not all of them need to be introduced more than just mentioning that they are also present
you can also group some of them together, like couples, siblings, parents/children, etc.
Don’t go into too much detail
this does not mean don’t share any details about them, but with a bigger group it’s better to focus on the most important, most obvious things
take every character that is present and try to think about two or three things that are either immediately notable about the character or that you think is really important to know about them right away
then try to describe the character with just one important aspect, or maybe two or three if they’re a main character
notable things: physical traits, distinctive voices, speaking patterns, etc.
focus on a few important points, so not everyone is talking over each other, which makes it confusing for the reader
things to talk about: their names, the reason, why they are here and why they came together, etc.
think about what questions your characters need to answer in that scene and who asks and who answers
you know every aspect of your characters, but your reader doesn’t know them yet, so you decide when they need to find out what detail
think about how your characters feel about new people, are they completely open or maybe a little more guarded?
you can say a lot about a character by their reaction to other people
don’t view this as the only introduction
when you meet a new group of people you probably can’t remember all their names as soon as they said them, so don’t expect this from your characters or your readers either
you have a whole book to let the reader get to know them so use this
give the reader new details every now and then, don’t try to do it for all characters at the same time
you can even repeat some information like names, ages, their profession, by making one of the characters ask again
it’s a long process to get to know someone and a lot of characteristics only come out in specific moments, so give the reader something every now and then and make them interested in finding out more
