Watching the first FNAF movie for the first time in about a year or so. Without my FNAF blinders on.
It's not really a horror movie, it's very much a character driven movie, which yeah kinda ruins the horror aspect I guess. But I also understand the perspective of not wanting these innocent children to seem like monsters or aimless killers, which was dropped for the second movie and they went more with the vengeful spirit aspect (huh...wonder if that connects to anything), thus making Charlotte the monster. But I'm getting ahead of myself as I'm talking about the first movie on its own.
It's campy I guess. Again not really good for those expecting a horror movie, I wouldn't even call it a thriller. It's just not scary. But in my opinion FNAF has never been scary which is what makes it a good first horror experience (again speaking from experience as FNAF was my introduction to horror, as someone who wasn't allowed to like horror). I do like the story changes with Mike Schmidt being his own character, Abby being able to talk to ghosts, stuff like that. They really try to build up a mystery of who the yellow rabbit is, which is good for general audiences but for FNAF fans it was ruined by Scott and Dawko, who revealed the cast during a fucking live stream. Just a bad decision. I remember the whole time being in theaters and being impatient. Honestly just waited for my brother's reaction who knew nothing about FNAF. My mom on the other hand loves mystery movies and figured it out almost immediately so I guess it was predictable. The Vanessa twist was... interesting. Don't know if it connects to security breach but if they're cooking up anything else with that game I hope they elaborate more instead of keeping everything secretive SCOTT! He wrote the second movie on his own and it fuckin shows. I don't ever like saying someone is a bad writer, because I have no standing there. As someone who considers herself a bad writer, I'm working hard on my own projects to be better, despite there still being mascot horror influences. But I'm unsure why he's still writing his own story. His input is important, he's the creator whether people like that or not, but FNAF would benefit with another writer, which I believe they're doing for the third movie.
I'm honestly losing my train of thought so I wanna talk about my expectations for the third movie, because yes despite hating the second movie I wanna see how this shit show ends. Of course Springtrap is still my favorite design from FNAF. And I kinda lied when I said FNAF wasn't scary, because yeah the third game to me was scary. Not in a jump scare aspect but it being one on one with this psychopathic killer as phantoms of the past come back to haunt you. I've always been the person to state that FNAF needs to remain PG13 because yeah, why alienate your core audience of children. FNAF 3 would benefit from being rated R. Make Springtrap on the same level as Ghostface or Michael Myers. In fact he's kinda already like Michael, a force of evil who really can't be killed...until Michael died in the last film...I honestly don't remember that movie much it also sucked. Make Fazbear's Fright the same as the Overlook hotel from The Shining, which I feel FNAF could have a lot in common with if it tried.
Speaking of Michael. Fucking get rid of Michael Afton. That should have just never happened and makes no fucking sense as he didn't do shit in that film. I would love for the movie to take place 30 years later after the first FNAF film. Abby is an adult and the main protagonist, maybe returning back to her home town after the construction of Fazbear's Fright. Idk I like the idea of Abby being the main protagonist for some reason. Mike served his purpose and Abby's character is more interesting. William should remain silent. In other forms of FNAF media William is a fucking chatter box. He needs to shut up. The whole silent killer thing is more interesting in my opinion. Obviously Vanessa has to fit in there somewhere but geez I wish she didn't. But I can see this being her Vanny moment, and her honestly being the main antagonist, occupying and copying the past of her father but going after adults of course because Charlotte is the opposite of William and kills adult...I really hate what they did to Charlotte. Idk, just spitballing. They're obviously taking from other FNAF media given the endings of both films reflect the endings of the first two books from the silver eyes trilogy. Honestly the silver eyes is still one of my favorite books and some of Scott's best writing, though I do believe he had help even with that.
But yeah. Set it 30 years later, Springtrap is a silent killer, Vanny is also a killer, Abby is the main protagonist. Honestly for some exposition you could have her visit the same psychiatric hospital Aunt Jane was admitted to and have Michael give more explanation on the cast since they killed Henry off in the credits. Idk.
Still like the first movie, just not through the eyes of it being horror.
