web portfolio
I wanted to keep my designs for my portfolio very clean and simple, as my interest is in creative advertising predominately, from my research its best to have a cleaner style that allows each of your projects to shine through.
I chose six projects for my pdf portfolio and then three to my online portfolio. I may add more in future but I wanted to start with less to not overcrowd my work.
As I currently can't purchase the paid readymag subscription, im unsure if all of the edits I made are visible but this version of my portfolio is very much a work in progress and I will be working on this over the summer to ensure it is up to standard for when I begin work.
I chose three of the projects I am most proud of on my online portfolio and kept the style similar to my pdf version. I wanted the tone of voice to be friendly and I chose to have a photo of myself on the landing page so it feels more personal. I also linked my socials and email to the tag at the top. I think the online portfolio shows my skills across varying different softwares and also displays my interests in other areas like politics and illustration.
Simple and flexible portfolio for a creative.
AS far as other promotional material is concerned, I have been using my pocket testers as a kind of business card as I think they showcase my capabilities as a designer and they also have a QR code that goes to my portfolio.

Final evaluation
This project has been a really inspiring experience. I have managed to fulfil all of the aims I started with and have learned so much about the industry that I’d like to go into.
I initially started looking at the things women hold physically and metaphorically which led to my research on womens pcoekts, as often women are not able to carry what they own. Despite not pursuing half of this idea, this research fueled my work to produce an outcome that touches on those issues, but not as explicitly as first intended,
Despite the change in my learning agreement, I still managed to touch on important issues that I began with. The lack of functional pockets contributes to the labour women have to endure, so solving this one small issue would theoretically lesson the burden. Focusing soley on the introduction of functional pockets for women was one of the best decsiions I made in progresssing my work, as it allowed me to provide a simple and achivble solution to a problem I had outlined.
I have learned how to successfully conduct interviews which was one of the main driving forces for my project. I found it insightful to gain primary research from individuals like Amanda Fletcher but also my family and peers. Interviewing women brought important insight that helped guide my outcome. I was made aware of issues I hadn’t considered and was able to solve issues that were brought to light during my interactions.
During my project, I had moments where I struggled to come up with my aim. I was always clear about the subject matter I wanted to cover, however coming up with a specific call to action, target audience and solution proved difficult as there were so many options for me to choose from.
To alleviate this, I found documenting each of my ideas through quick illustrations incredibly useful, some of which I have added to this process book. While they seem frivolous, drawing out each idea, no matter how far-fetched or silly, meant I could reflect on all my options visually, and decide on the ones that would be best to visually communicate my idea. As well as this, I valued asking my course mates for their advice as gaining an ‘outsiders’ perspective, helped to remove any bias I may have. I have found being surrounded by so many talented designers truly inspiring and their input and advice has been invaluable to this project.
Having resrrahce a variety of camapigns which gave me both visual and conceptual isnpration, I was then able to succesfully plan my time. I worked backwards from the deadline which then allowed me to crete ‘to do lists’ daily to sensure I remined on track. This also kept in mind the main outcomes I wanted to create which included my pocket tester, a few OOH examples and most importantly, my presenration video. I ammaged to not only stay on track, but create my rpesentation video in time for the Creative Conscience dealdine which was on April 28th.
DUring the outcome production, my adverts went trhough many differernt varatoins as i wanted to ensure the copy was legible and my message was understood clearly.
The final version is something I’m really proud of, it has a consistent visual language, a clear narrative and succesfully appeals to my target audience with an obvious call to action. I managed to generate two solutions, a brand championing pockets and a free how-to guide on how to extend your pockets. This variation not only proved that it can be done without cost for the customer, but also it allowed me to display my skills with different software. I used Premier Pro for my video, XD for my website, InDesign for my pocekt tester and Photoshop for the adverts. I’m glad I got to develp my skills using different softwares as I do feel more prepapred for wokr after leaving university.
I feel this project has been a well rounded experience, it has challenged my skills and ideology and I have created a series of physical and digital outcomes that I’m proud of. If I were to do this project again I think I would have trusted my insticnts more when it came to my idea, I spent a lot of time near the beginning lacking conviction and trust in my idea, despite wanting to do my project about pockets from the very start. If I had more faith in my process, I wouldve come to a lot of my realisations sooner. Despite this, I am still grattful for the resrach that came out of that period of procrastiantion, I was still able to explore all the possibilities I wanted to and crate an outcome that I love.
I wanted to go over the learning objectives to make sure I have completed every part of the project that I can. This is just a brief (ish) summary of each part, the rest is just all on this blog.
LO1-
Demonstrate your ability to develop a clear understanding of the relationship of research to your practice in forming a personal and critical viewpoint in the realisation, refinement and production of your Major Project.
The research that I have completed, from looking into Maira Kalman, to my primary research ilike my interviews has vastly inspired my final outcome both visually and conceptually. I personally found the interviews that I conducted the most important part of my research as it helped me to create an outcome that solved the problem the people I interviewed outlined. Thinking about the presence of handbags and how pockets elevates this, thinking about how money and overconsumption concerns meant some people didn't want to purchase new jeans helped me reallise that making a step by step guide on how to achieve deep pockets at home would be a great secondary outcome. Some of the issues and viewpoints outlined in interviews are things I would have never considered, so the input of others were invaluable to the progression of my work. I think also looking into previous campaigns helped me to structure my script for the presentation video to ensure I got my message across clearly. Looking at campaigns by Nike showed me that brands can spark change and imply that others follow their lead which is what I tried to have with this project.
LO2-
Demonstrate sustained and effective development of a practical working methodology to a topic that you have defined and which includes speculation on new and effective approaches that are at the forefront of Visual Communication practice.
Throughout this project I have explored different ways of approaching a solution to the problems proposed. The way I did this often was through my illustrations, many of which are present in my process book. this means that I could look through any ideas, no matter how silly and see them visually which meant that I could work out ways of practically producing them. My adverts went through many different variations where I experimented how they would look on mockups and also how clearly they demonstrated my idea. I used feedback from my peers and tutorials to guide this. The pocket tester is a physical outcome that im really proud of, the idea came from some of my illustrations which as my project progressed, I returned to and adapted to fit in with both H&Ms branding and also my own personal style. The result is a unique piece that would not only drive sales for H&M but also raise awareness of the issue itself.
LO3-
Demonstrate an ability to authoritatively and independently project manage ideas, practice, time and work strategies in the production of a well realised body of work, reflecting the complexity of the major project and engaging effectively with academic support and resources.
I have worked very consistently throughout this project, working from daily aims and 'to do lists' to ensure I stay on track and be prepared for tutorials to make sure I gain the most from my feedback. More on this can be seen in a previous Tumblr post where I go into more depth about this. If I were to do this project again, I probably would've scheduled time specifically based on each task as i feel I didn't have enough time for my portfolio as I would've wanted.
LO4-
Demonstrate an ability to critically reflect on the process of your major project documenting its relation to both personal and wider professional contexts, practices and debates.
this task asks you to show your skill in thoughtfully analyzing the process of your major project. You should document how it relates to both your personal experiences and the broader professional context, practices, and debates in the field.
I have been critically reflecting on my work throughout through the use of feedback from tutors, speaking to my peers and also just by my own judgement based on my research. I have made sure I kept up to date with my Tumblr which meant I could reflect on my process and work out what was the best next step for me to take.
production of my process book
here are the developments of my process book which I did in the bindary with Joseph.
Im so insanely proud of my jean book (or my jook as its called I suppose)
I used Japanese stab stitch with perfect binding and then I created my jean surfaces using greybeard which were then pressed. Both the front and back pockets are fully functional.
I wanted to create this because I knew I would have more time as I had created my presentation video in time for the creative conscience deadline so I wanted to make something more ambitious. Ive always loved book making, it's been something I have been really engaged with since coming to university so I thought it would be fitting to make something cool for my final project.
I think this helps bring my project all together, i have a physical pocket tester, with a matching book and all of my digital content.
luckily, everything I did was JUST under the word count, as I had forgotten to take into account my other process book for translate transform but I had time to adapt this.
hand bound, spray painted process book for translate transform
update on new section.
first part of video.
I created the initial part of the video as I wanted to set the tone for the rest of the content. I have written my script which outlines the problem, the statistics and my proposed solution.
Here are the aims I have for the video and my ideas for visuals:
simplistic visuals, H&M use quite clean typography and messages in their adverts
Outline what ive made and also the option for free pockets.
the aim is to showcase how a brand could make a simple change and the difference it would make.
target audience:
this is more of a presentation video as if I was pitching a campaign for H&M, so the presentation video would be to show what a campaign could look like, the visual language, copy and the outcomes I think would work coming from my research.
If this campaign was real, the aim of the adverts would be to showcase H&M as sparking change within this specific problem and being the first fast fashion brand to make a significant leap in terms of equality when it comes to functional clothes for women.
The target audience has always just been women, I never wanted to specify a specific group of women in terms of demographic as this is an issue that affects all of us. This includes non-binary people, trans women, and anyone else that may be wearing womens clothes. My research has spread across different age groups and ive realised that women form every age group could benefit from this, and its such a long standing issue that would really impact the lives of the people it affects.
The call to action:
from the adverts is several things,, some more obvious and some just implied.
From my conversation with Cieran, I told him I wanted to have some shame onto other companies with this cmapign, and he said that I had managed to imply this with the content I created. The pocket tester does shame other companies as they are part of the average statistics for mens and womens pockets. also the 10% advert implies that while H&M have good pockets, the other 90% miss the mark.
For the adverts, the main aim would be to buy jeans from H&M as the cmapign displays H&M as understanding a problem and providing a solution
Another call to action would be to go in store and pick up a free pocket tester, which would start a chain reaction of not only buying jeans from H&M but also not buying jeans from other companies.
the secondary call to action is to head to the website to find out how to make pockets you already have deeper.
The implied call to action is to not go to other brands for jeans.
finding songs about pockets
this is probably the most boring task I've done in a long time, I trawled through Spotify finding any song that mentions pockets in a somewhat relevant way and then added it to a very niche playlist I created.
I needed to find a good song for the background of my presentation video that fits in with H&Ms branding but also conveys my message and also my own personal style. Here are the catagories that I want the song to fit:
fast tempo, I want to match the words of my script to the song, I will not be doing a VoiceOver so the song needs to be quick so the attention of the audience is captured.
cheerful, H&M always use quite happy music and so I want my song to be cheerful
mentions pockets (obviously)
After listing to my quite peculiar playlist I settled on back pocket by Vulfpeck. Its quick, well known and mentions pockets in a way I can use easily and effecivlu
This is my work applied to a mockup setup. I think this is the best way to get my message across, it's simple, has only one statistic and also implies shame on other companies which is one of my aims.
This is the final version, I listened to the advice of the lecturers (partially lol) and took out the caption on all but one of the adverts. This looks better and more succinct in my opinion. My next step is to add this to a mockup to put it into context.
This was my second version,
I edited the colours of the pockets so the 9 look a little greyed out and the one functional pocket is warmer toned and looks more saturated. I started to think about repeating the images and how this could look in an advert so I made some quick illustrations like this:
I thought that it could work really well as an escalator advert, seeing pocket after pcooekt and then only one with hands in pockets.
I also got photos of 10 peoples pockets with only one of them able to fit a woman's hand. I listened to the advice of Cieran and wanted to take the 10% statistic more literally as it's quite an easy thing to visually communicate.
This was the first version I did with the stat at the bottom. Could this be on a billboard maybe?
notes from tutorial with Cieran
use the percentages for ad
percentages 10%
10 posters with only one and star stays same
hands in pockets being a power stance women are robbed of this
percentages of seconds
unfollowing brands that don’t follow version
pocket tester to measure what brands are doing
call to action is implied with h and m saying the statistics
I had a really useful tutorial with Cieran about my adverts and the best way of presenting them. He mentioned how useful the 10% statistic is a really easy one to visualise and I should try and find some intersting avenues to showcase my content. whether this could be having 10 seconds with only one of them with a pocket or 1/10 posters having a pocket.
mockups using my pocket tester
Pocket tester photoshoot
I set up the photography studio and spent the day photographing different peoples pockets.
I ensured that I got a variety of different pocket sizes from different types of jeans. I marked up the camera so the pocket tester would remain in the same (ish) position in each photograph. I was impressed by how good the colour of the paper looked on different jean types, it stands out nicely but isn't too bright that it wouldn't fit in with H&Ms more muted colour palleters.
I spoke to my housemate Mia, who is on the film course about match cuts, as I thought this could be a great visual to use in my presentation video. The reason I did this was I thought it would showcase acceurely how the pocket tester works, and how it'll look different depending on the size of the pockets used.
Testing it on so many people also solidified that the pocket tester is accurate and works the way I intended.
pocket tester and jean photos
This week, I wanted to ensure I had lots of content to work from when it came to the creation of my prevention video. While I'll be utlitisng some stock footage, it's important that I take lots of my own content especially with my pocket tester. which I was able to print with the paper I ordered.
The paper I used 'Pils' from GF Smith I chose specifically so it would match the colour stitching on traditional American jeans. The origin for this is apparently because that colour thread just used to be stronger and the contrast with the blue looked nice so they just kept using it. When it came to printing, it was a perfect match so I wanted to photograph it next to some jeans as well as I thought this would be good content to use.
Since my last prototype, I dropped the type size slightly and I added my (current) website onto the QR code. I thought that if my work is being displayed, Id like to print lots of these pocket testers and they could act as a sort of business card. I love this idea, its one im really proud of and taking a part of my project to interviews or if someone picks it up and scans it feels like a great way of showcasing myself as a new designer.
