A rough edit of my photos from a shoot with Freediveuk.
Ian is one of the instructors on the course, currently in its 5th season of business, diving and running courses in a quarry near Bodmin and along the various coasts of Cornwall.
Ian is an experienced diver, having dove to 70 metres on 3 minutes of breath. This shoot was exclusive to the quarry as the visibility in the sea at the moment is next to nothing with the swell.
This is definitely one of my favourite shoots I've done this year and I'm already keen to get back and photograph him in the pool and potentially also the sea in a couple months. Great day.

The Exmouth sea swimmers
A couple shots from my shoot with the sea swimmers in Exmouth. The women, all over fifty, head out every morning at six am to swim out to various buoys along the Exmouth seafront. The group originally brought together by Jennifer Willmott have now begun to brand themselves with pink swim caps after numerous papers and publications wanting to photograph them.

I decided to return to Steve for my project on 'touch' as i knew, after my first shoot, that there was so much scope for a project and i was really inspired by his story that to just even go back and speak to Steve a bit more was something i was excited to do.
I wanted to show Steve and Bilbo on a more intimate and personal level, instead of shooting them out by the beach i wanted to get more of an idea close to home and so spent the day drinking tea and chatting in Steve's cabin just off the break of Sennen cove, a beach where he has been a lifeguard for the majority of his RNLI working days. It was so great to hear his story in more depth and gain more of an understanding of what he's been through with the RNLI and in life in general, also learning that he lost half of his left index finger to a board leash whilst surfing Sennen and all of his top teeth after being pushed into the rocks from a fierce swell on a rescue to the same beach.
Through circumstances Steve is now making jewellery from his cabin and selling it in a gallery in st ives whilst also still being booked by schools to give talks with bilbo about beach safety and awareness.
I was really touched by Steve's story and also his open and willingness to open up and spend time chatting with me. I chose this story to put forward as my project on touch because really every aspect of this story is dealing with one being touched by another; Steve is constantly and always has been touched and transformed by his surrounding landscapes which led Bilbo, who spent the first two years of his life with another family who had no time for a dog his size and would chain him up all day whilst they where at work, to be touched by Steve, so much that , after taking Bilbo on one off walks across the coastal path whilst checking lifeguard phone points he grew attached to Steve and was eventually given to him. At first it seemed a burden but really Steve saved Bilbo who also ended up saving Steve himself " He's the only reason i sometimes got up in the morning, to walk him across the coast".
We chatted at length and as well as the subjects of my photos being touched by another i think its often forgotten how much a photographer can be touched by their subjects themselves and so this adds another element to my work, with the passion i feel for this story and my want yet caution to document it in its truest and raw form.

Steve and Bilbo
Sennen, February 2014
For one of my relationship shoots i went down to Sennen to pay Bilbo and his owner/best friend Steve a visit…Definitely one of my best shoots so far, Steve is an amazing guy and it was great to hear his story over tea in his cabin just a few paces from the beach before heading out to the dramatic backdrop of sennen to get some shots of the pair, both Bilbo and steve rely so much on each other…
The very person you save can end up being the very person that saves you, and in this case it couldn't be more true…I couldn't whittle down the photos so for now heres quite a few, looking forward to getting down there again to maybe take a different perspective on the story but for now …see what you think…

In light of the recent mad weather, i was drawn back to the photos and film projects of Mickey Smith. Whilst his photos depict something of an un-tameable magnitude they hold on to a certain serenity.
