day 3: promise/this is where my heart is

Sketched another Lord Golden today.

There’s something about Beloved only appearing to Fitz as Lord Golden after the quarrel. Lord Golden, I think , was Beloved’s fantasy condensed to a persona. Like the final party he throws before the dreaded ending: this is a persona where he gets to be this beautiful figure drafted in silk, met Fitz again, flirted, fall in love. He gets to be a foreign lord instead of the pale jester, playing cat and mouse with his princeling. It’s a fantasy of course, but Lord Golden is not a prophet, and Tom Badgerlock is not a Catalyst. And they can just, be this, for a while. Before he has to go face the Pale Woman, and his eventual death.

And of course Fitz has to take it away. I think the Fool never appeared again not out of anger or grudge. I think he was scared. Lord Golden in a way, was the vain golden armour that Beloved clinged to for a while, before eventually peeling it off to meet his unavoidable death. So after the quarrel came the molting, and the quarrel ended with Beloved telling Fitz about the prophecy of his death. Acceptance of his fate, by speaking them into words, in a sense.

The quarrel felt more significant to me than just Fitz trying to be straight. In his refusal it felt like he spoke out Beloved’s death somehow. I don’t have words for it yet, but Fitz spoke something into the truth that day. Taken into consideration the Pale Woman’s approach, I think Fitz’s “awareness” or denial/confirmation of his feeling to Beloved is the key to how things turned out in Asjlevjal. And Beloved somehow knew it.

…and finally an attempt to do a character design for Beloved. I cannot for the love of Robin Hobb keep his design consistent. Oh well. His character was never really big on consistency anyway.

I know, I'm starting with the free space, but the cards that have Thick don't have the other characters I want to draw lol

Notes:

Thick's description from the wiki: "He is short and pudgy, has small ears that are snug close to his head and raggedly cropped hair. He keeps the end of his tongue pushed out of his mouth and the set of his eyelids makes him appear sleepy. His clothes were at first second-hand and too big for him, but since his talent was discovered, he's had clothes that mark him as the Prince's man. Fitz estimates his age to be in his late twenties." I didn't include the tongue being out since I knew I wanted him to be smiling for the portrait, but I tried to stay close to the description. I specially wanted his clothes to be rich and for him to look very dignified, as befits his station.

I have always read Thick as someone with Down Syndrome, so I was looking at references of people of color with DS while drawing. These two in particular:

One of the first things I decided was that I wanted him to be surrounded by light to represent his happy Skill-music. I always associate Thick with light and warmth.

Thick's origins are vague since he only came to Buckkeep as part of a traveling group of musicians. I usually draw people from Buck and the surrounding areas with darker skin, but since Thick may not originate from the coastal region I went with a lighter brown skintone.

you would think that shrewd would have kept an eye on galen’s skill lessons given how desperately the six duchies needed a functioning coterie and the fact that shrewd knows galen is a half-trained skillmaster, but nope! like before fitz started his training, burrich warned fitz that he heard galen was ‘a very hard teacher,’ even he had an idea of galen’s brutality! shrewd knew about galen’s use of privation and pain when the reasonable method was guile, and he let galen have complete control over the skill lessons?? knowing that galen didn’t have the best track record in teaching since he hadn’t initiated anyone into the skill in his 15 years of being skillmaster?? the majority of the skill training was literally during winter when there were no raids and verity didn’t have to be vigilant 24/7; if shrewd couldn’t keep an eye on the skill training, he should’ve made verity since they would be his coterie. but sure, cede any say in the training of the kingdom’s defensive force!

shrewd just watched how miserable and broken everyone was in their silent table in the dining hall and was like they’re going to make a great coterie😆 their battered bodies means good team bonding the isolation is working🩷 remember when burrich saw a welt on fitz’s face but couldn’t do anything and that’s when fitz realized he was galen’s now, and galen knew it. like um. shrewd gave fitz to galen on a silver platter fully aware of how galen despised fitz and how vulnerable fitz would be in his skill training. but of course it’s not surprising that shrewd didnt give a fuck about fitz. you know what was surprising? that shrewd didn’t give a fuck about AUGUST. his nephew. his dead sister’s only child. actually on second thought that’s typical shrewd behavior, but wow. shrewd let august be physically and emotionally abused by galen. he didn’t bother to realize something was deeply wrong with august after the skill training, shrewd’s mistakes caused august’s skill-burn and eventual death. do you think merry farseer had asked shrewd to look after august. do you think shrewd thought about how he failed his sister. august was the youngest child in galen’s lessons :( he was polite to fitz before galen :( and verity also failed august because you’re telling me verity saw how galen crippled fitz’s skill ability and didn’t think hmm let me check in on august…“August was Skill-burned and never recovered. For him, I sometimes thought it a mercy. The Skill was leading him down a path ill-suited to him. I think I suspected then that Galen had done something to the coterie. But I had so much to do.” <- words from verity’s mouth. a mercy, he says. when it literally didn’t have to be this way.

People always talk about Fitz and Nighteye's relationship or Fitz and the Fool's relationship and that makes sense but please can we talk about Nighteyes and the Fool. Can we please.

The way the Fool cannot hear Nighteyes' thoughts, but is still sensitive to them. The way he senses when something is amiss with Nighteyes before Fitz does in "Fool's Errand". The way Nighteyes is the one who thinks we are whole when the Fool joins them. The way Nighteyes understands, deeply, the importance of The Scentless One to his pack. The way the Fool is always concerned about Nighteyes' wellbeing (something that seems to baffle Fitz every time), how he gaurds him.

Nighteyes and Beloved are of course linked to one another because of their link to Fitz, but that does not make their bond any less important to me. It doesn't lessen, to me at least, the importance of those two in each other's lives.
