Artist's Statement 2023
I am both an illustrator and a potter. My work combines functionality with imagery, using organic forms and curves to create vessels. Functional pottery is intended to be held, felt, viewed, and used. Through this, two-dimensional images are able to be physically felt.
Inspired by nature, history, and fauna, my ceramics combine everyday usage with elaborate illustrations. My goal is to bring imagery into the hands of individuals and let the holders express things they find aesthetically pleasing through serveware. My work uses white or off-white stoneware in wheel-thrown vessels such as mugs, bowls, vases, teapots, and cookware to connect my vision of the natural world with an audience. There will always be a need for physical objects, and the mundane simplicity pushed by trends of minimalism and brutalism has diminished artists' vision of interior design. I want to push the boundary between maximalism and minimalism, creating pieces that invoke both aesthetics.
As an illustrator, nature has always been a major part of my life. My journey to discover how to transfer two-dimensional illustrations onto a three-dimensional object has been an ongoing task. There is something incredibly satisfying about creating something that someone can not only look at but hold. The sense of touch is lost in 2-d illustrations and I intend to revive it with my work.
In conclusion, my ceramic work is a visualized example of my connection to the history of pottery, as well as my connection to the natural world. Organic textures and forms create the body, while illustrations of how I see the world create the image.
