the temptation to bring evan back is very strong, rn.
“Yeah, sorry about that. I end up spending most of my time all the way out here. Walkies always work – cell is a crapshoot half the time.” It truly was. Being called to help with the dinosaurs in other parts of the island wasn’t uncommon for him, and through walkie-talkies always seemed to be the best way to go… it was too bad he just couldn’t use that method with Evan.
However, she had finally made it to the paddock, and that was what mattered. When she asked if he actually would let her see them, Owen’s brow threatened to furrow. “Sure. That was our little agreement, wasn’t it? I’ll take you up top. It’s the best view of the girls, but just make sure to keep a good grip on the railing.” A small chuckle almost slipped past his lips as he let her go to take the lead up the stairs to the walkway around the top perimeter of the paddock.
Once he made it to the top, the trainer approached the railing without making his way out to the catwalk. Luckily the enclosure was big enough that two of the girls were visible; the other two must have wandered off into the brush. “See,” the man commented as he motioned down to one of the raptors staring right at him with bright amber eyes. “There’s the girl that brought me in to see you.”
As she followed him up to the top of the paddock, staying back from the rail for safety. However the sight of the raptors beneath her, especially the one that had made this happen in the first place, had her stepping forward and gripping onto the railings. They were incredible creatures and to finally see them up close had her absolutely in shock. The pictures in their files failed to do them justice.
“They’re amazing.” She whispered, not even directly to Owen but just more to the open air. The girl did give him a quick look, her face practically glowing, before turning back to look at Owen. “You get to be around them every day? You’re so lucky. All I get are screaming kids.” Evan joked with a small laugh.
Most of the time the woman kept her thoughts about the dinosaurs to herself. Many of the people in the hospital saw the dinosaurs as a liability since they were the main reason people came into the hospital. But she admried the creatures and believed that they deserved far better than the life and respect than they had.
Upon hearing his name, Owen lifted his eyes from the buckets he had been setting up to the mulch path that led to the paddock. There he recognized Evan and one of the security workers; the poor girl was probably getting berated for nothing. The trainer came to his feet and headed down to the lower level to meet her, his boots clanking on metal steps until he hit the dirt.
“Ah, cut it out, will you? This is the girl that fixed up my arm. Told her she could come by for a visit,” he briefly explained as he placed a relatively healed hand between the woman’s shoulder blades to lead her away. Thankfully Owen was in charge (at least when Hoskins was gone), and the security trainee stepped down and returned to his post.
He led their guest to the base of the staircase to the paddock before taking his hands off her, and a small smile came to his lips as he reunited with her after their unfortunate meeting a few days prior. “Wasn’t sure you’d actually make it down here. The girls are roaming free right now, so I can take you up to see ‘em, if you want?”
With his hand on her shoulder, she began to slowly fall into step beside him. Eyes examined the paddock with great interest as she took just how tall it was and the thickness of the walls. It was clearly built to keep the girls in and she couldn’t help but admire it. Part of her was almost jealous that Owen got to spend his days out here while she was stuck inside a hospital full of screaming kids who complained about owies and booboos.
“Things at the hospital got a little crazy. A triceratops juvenile bit a kid because said kid took the food away. It was a whole fiasco to deal with.” Evan explained with a small sigh, giving a shake of her head. There were plenty of other cases that she had to deal with but that had been the worst one. “I would have called but you’re a difficult man to reach. Probably because of how remote it is out here.” She smiled at that, gazing around at the trees once more, “It must be nice.”
The mention of the raptors caught her attention again, turning her gaze from the trees back to him. “Wait, really? You’d let me just walk in and look at them?” Evan didn’t really believe she could do that but he was the one in charge out here. “I would love to.”
“Y’know, the paddock is technically restricted, but I think I could bend the rules for you. I mean, you technically work here anyway, so it’s not that big of a deal.” After all, with what she had been willing to do for him and his girls by making such a simple choice, it only felt right. Not many people on Isla Nublar had a chance to see the raptors, but with her kindness… well, he felt that she deserved the opportunity.
With his hand positioned at his side once more, Owen’s eyes intently watched her as she worked to clean up the mess. “It was nice t’ meet you too – just wish it was under better circumstances.”
The man headed for the door to take his leave in time; however, he caught himself before he was too far, his gaze and figure briefly swiveling back in her direction with something to say. “Really though, if you ever wanna stop by and meet the girls, just drop by. I’m pretty much always down there.”
She gave him a nod as he spoke, offering one last smile beore she had to jump straight back into work. There were a couple more people who needed to be seen due to less than genius ideas. But Evan kept the thought in her head of going to see the raptors. It would be interesting but only if she got the time.
And she did, a couple days later. The manager of the hospital demanded than Evan take a day off after working so hard the past few weeks. She couldn’t refuse and simply decided it would be a good time to go see the raptors. Dressing for the part with cargo pants and a button up, she took one of the Jeeps and headed out to the paddock.
The drive was a little longer since they kept the raptors so far away but she didn’t mind. It was nice to see more of the island. Pulling up to the paddock, she jumped out of the car ad simply looked around to take it all in. That was until, someone started demanding answers. “I-I’m here to see Owen Grady,” the girl answered quickly, looking around for the man in question.
That line earned her a small smile in return, his eyes willing to soften at her kindness toward his animals. It wasn’t every day that he met with someone who cared about the dinosaurs the same way that he did – sure, most handlers felt the same way, but he hadn’t expected one of the nurses to cooperate.
Once she had finished fixing up his wound, Owen flexed his fingers to make sure the bandage wasn’t too tight. He then took the bottle of antibiotics from her before coming to his feet. “All right, thanks.”
The man slipped the pills into his pocket and offered a hand out to her even if her arms were already crossed. It only felt right. “I’ll keep that in mind. If you ever need anything, feel free to come down to the paddock… and I won’t let you get bitten – promise.” Of course he had to throw in something light-hearted.
Evan had always been known for her kind heart. Even when she was a little girl she was always helping anyone that she could find or anyone who seemed like they needed someone. If animals were involved then she turned extremely protective, standing up for their rights and protecting them at all costs.
Seeing his hand, she quickly unfolded her arms and took it into her own, giving it a small shake while offering him a smile. Owen was a good man, as far as she could tell. He knew what he believed in and stood up for it, along with protecting those beliefs. It was a nice change to some of the screaming kids that typically frequented the area.
“I might need to stop by at some point then. I’ve always wanted to see the raptors. Plus, might be nice to cash in the favor.” Evan cleaned up the tools that she had used on him and began to dispense of them. “It was nice to meet you, Owen.”
She built up a high respect for herself in that moment. As she had moved to the file, Owen could feel his shoulders tense and his eyes narrow right at her… but then she recorded down something he wasn’t expecting. Raptor Name: Unknown. That meant his girls were going to be just fine, leaving his wound as the last thing he had to worry about for the day.
The man let out a relieved sigh as he leaned back in his seat once more and as he adjusted his hand before she began the stitching process. It wasn’t a huge problem to him, as he’d been sewn up in the past, but it was still such an odd feeling. He wasn’t squeamish, his eyes watching over her fingers as she worked on the sutures.
Although she was focused in on her job, it felt important to him to officially thank her for what she had done. Whether she knew it or not, she definitely saved him a lot of stress. “I, uh… thanks, by the way. Both for helping me out and for not writing down Charlie’s name. I really appreciate it.”
She was just finishing up the stitches when he spoke, hr eyes adverting from his wound to his face. A simple smile came upon her lips. “The animals don’t deserve any more punishment then they already have.” Evan cut the thread and put the needle to the side. Carefully she laid down some gauze and taped it, before wrapping his hand up with an ace bandage.
Turning away, she dug in one of the cabinets and grabbed a bottle of antibiotics. A few notes were written on the bottle and then on his file before she handed them over. “Take one a day until they’re gone. Any bacteria Charlie might be carrying will be killed by that. It’ll keep you from infection.”
Evan closed up his file, folding her arms while leaning back against the counter. “If you get bit again just come to me. The other nurses might not be so keen as to exclude the raptor’s name but I will. These animals are treated like circus acts. Let’s not treat them like monsters, too.”
“You’ll meet Daisy soon enough. She’s also has powers.” He felt like it was a mistake coming in here. There was nothing he could do to really help her at the moment without getting himself into trouble. This wasn’t his area of expertise like it was Daisy and Coulson. “I’m sorry that I’m not much help.”
She didn’t care if someone else had powers, she didn’t care that someone was going to help her, and she just, well, didn’t care. Evan looked away out of anger, knowing the more she listened and the more he said it would only make it worse. “Why take me when I didn’t hurt anyone?”
( ” just leave. this doesn’t concern you. “ )
except it did. barry was willing to give this woman the benefit of the doubt; maybe it was some sort of misunderstanding. whatever the case, barry wasn’t leaving until he got answers. “ i’m not going to hurt you. just— tell me what happened. maybe i can help you. “
“you can’t help me.” she looked back to the mirage and took in a deep breath. “it’s just..i’m a metahuman. like you. and this is part of me.” evanna knelt beside the dead body then took in a deep breath. “it’s hard to explain but just go. i can deal with it.”
The challenge of her stare was met with Hartley’s unrelenting gaze. “Evanna. I don’t think you’re in a position to say such a thing.” Names were important to him, he wouldn’t use them lightly.
It had been Miss Peters once.
Hartley kept a steady breath, watching her with a rueful look. He doesn’t know how to interpret her shaking head. It was almost hilarious that they’d appear on opposite sides of the law. It wasn’t good enough to be irony, but he considered it close.
He let her study him, letting shocked eyes roam over his calm expression. He won’t let his true emotions come over his face: not when he worked at S.T.A.R Labs, not as the Piper, and not here. There was a blank composure in how he conducted his exchanges.
“How would you know?” He replied, digging his fingers into the edge of the desk. “You left.”
Evan though she was so used to her first name, to hear Hartley use it felt almost like a stab to the heart. They hadn’t been close friends but they were acquaintances and she rather liked the faced that he didn’t go with her first name. It was different but made her happy. But that was the past.
And then he brought it up. Her face fell and a hand rubbed at her forehead. Of course that would become important at this time and Evan understood why. It had to have hurt her patient when she left him.
“I had to, Hartley, because of what I am. It was too dangerous to stay.”
He probably wouldn’t understand it. She had left him and that was the bottom line. It couldn’t have felt very good to lose someone who had been there every day taking care of you or talking to you. Losing someone was hard. Evan definitely understood that.
As the alcohol was pressed to his wound, it certainly did sting. With all the bacteria in their mouths, especially with feeding time, cleaning a raptor bite actually hurt more than he had anticipated. The man narrowed his eyes and twisted his lips to hold his composure; it was a bit of a military habit.
Owen knew he had been difficult, but there were just some things he couldn’t tell her so easily. Maybe it was the idea that she was actually helping him or that he was undergoing some odd kindness as his hand stung, but he finally answered her question, even if it was a few minutes late.
“It was Charlie. Blue already screamed at her for it, and she feels terrible, and I’m not mad. I’m only tellin’ you ‘cause you need the information, but if any reports come back to me about her needing to be executed, I swear…” His voice trailed off with defensive bitterness; he was going to protect the raptors he had left with his whole being. The second raptor they had bred, Subject V-2, had killed one of the workers and was put down for it, and he wasn’t going to let that happen again.
“Charlie. Okay.” She moved away from his side to the file, picking up the pencil. As she wrote it out, Evan spoke it, “Raptor Name: Unknown.” And then she went right back to tending to his wound without another word about the paper. Evan wasn’t really going to write down the name of the raptor that did this but simply wanted to know because some of the raptors carried different bacteria due to the genes being used.
Once she was able to clean out most of the dirt and blood, Evan grabbed an antiseptic wipe and quickly drew it against his wound so it didn’t have too much time to settle and sting. “Let me get the needle and sutures. It shouldn’t hurt too bad.” She promise, grabbing an anesthetic swab and rubbing it over his wound before going to get the needle.
Returning, Evan was careful to thread the needle with what was needed and went straight to work and sewing the wound up properly. She didn’t say much as she worked, simply focused on the job.
“Ten?” Sea green hues widened as he exhaled sharply. Hands running through his hair. “Evan, seriously?” He shook his head. “Ya’ know, you need a break too. You can’t just cover everyone, you need to take care of yourself too.” Worry laced in his ton as well as his gaze. He knew she was dedicated to her work, but still, there was a limit. He couldn’t really protest much, it was her job after all. He gave a nod, “Yeah, you should get back to work i’m sure you’re busy.” He attempted to smile that faltered as soon as she left his side again. He’d probably just end up sleeping again now that she was gone.
Evan felt bad. Leaving him like this was digging a hole in her heart but there was no turning back. The nurse had already left for the day and there had to be someone to cover the patient. Taking a deep breath, she stepped back into the room. “Okay, I’ll stay. But this is risking something, Barry.” Taking in a deep breath through her nose, she let it out harshly and several mirages appeared. With a mere thought they took off to their various tasks.
“Good, it’s not much, but it’s edible.” He said with a chuckle. Barry loved to eat, but he wasn’t exactly a master chef. He could do basics, like eggs and bacon. It wasn’t that hard to screw up and it was simple to make. “Is that all you’re eating?” Barry asked, brow quirked. Lifting his fork to the plates of food and piling a little more onto her plate. “You need to eat more, you’re so tiny.” He teased. Shaking his head at her question, “No way Evan, it’s your day off, you should pick what we do.”
She watched as he gave her more food, letting out a litle laugh. “Well, I know how much you need to keep your body going so I made sure to leave a lot. So, you sir, need to eat most of it.” But Evan didn’t take the food off her plate and instead began to much away at it. “Maybe you could show me S.T.A.R Labs? I’ve always wanted to see the inside of that place.”
“You still have your powers and will be able to use them once you leave this pod.” He felt bad for her, but it was better they had her instead of the ATCU. “I promise this is for you own good. And if you cooperate with Daisy and Coulson, you’ll be able to get out sooner.”
“Who are they?” She questioned, eyebrows knitting together. Were they the people who were going to torture answers out of her? Slowly Evan backed away from the glass with a nervous look in her eyes. “If you let me go, I won’t ever use my powers again. I-I’ll keep my mouth shut.”
so there’s a heavy chance this blog may be put on hiatus or deleted. it’s still in debate.
