Favorite Janelle Monae song 2/?: Q.U.E.E.N.

One of the many things I love about Janelle Monae is that she is never afraid to speak up on behalf of the oppressed and the ostracized. As a queer black woman herself, she incorporates her own pain and struggles into her music whilst giving a voice to the marginalized. In the classiest way possible, Janelle basically says, “To hell with conformity,” and I’m all here for it. Why should one have to compromise themselves for the people around them in order to gain acceptance in society? In the wise words of Monae, we should “Embrace what makes [us] unique– Even if it makes others uncomfortable.” Q.U.E.E.N.’s powerful message has made a lasting impact on me growing up in my teenage years and continues to do so in my quest for attaining self-love and managing my own insecurities.
