Every time the monthly "discourse" roles around as to whether consuming audio books counts as reading, I cannot help but think of the Odyssey, of the Iliad, of the Shakespearean plays. Works of art that have become solidified within Western Canon as some of the greatest pieces of literature we have. And all of them were mean to be heard, to be watched. Were crafted for it.

The Iliad and the Odyssey were meant to be listened to from the mouth of a bard, a lyre in his hand and a song on his tongue, as the smoke from the fires drowned out the rest of the world, the honey words transporting the audience into the story.

Shakespeare was meant to be watched. The actors bent over themselves, emotion pouring down their faces as the audience bumped shoulders with each other, breath held for the next act.

I love the written word, do not get that wrong. But we owe the written word to the oral tradition. To the bards and poets who passed down story after story, who kept them alive to the point where they could be written down and preserved. We owe it to performance. To the energy of the theater that found the plays that sparked electric in the peoples hearts, to the point of ensuring they would be around for generations to come.

Why disparage the performance of a story, when it might just be the most human thing we have? Why act like it is an inferior art form? I adore reading, but I also know that my favorite pieces of literature were meant to be heard.

Tell me why I almost cried like 3 different times watching The Sheep Detectives??

The Sheep Detectives is fun because it's a mystery about sheep trying to solve the murder of their beloved shepherd while also learning about the concept of death and there is a lot of heavy discussion about death and what happens to us (both humans and animals) when we die and we see examples of both of these types of death and it rips your heart out and then puts it back together in the end and also one of the sheep is voiced by Patrick Stewart and he makes funny sounds when he sticks his tongue out

rewatching Mamma Mia! and just. it’s so perfect in it’s imperfection. people are sweating and their hair is messy and the makeup is minimal and the older people have wrinkles and also look hot and the costuming is chaotic and perfect and the actors were a little tipsy and they mess up lines and aren’t always perfectly on pitch and some of them are clearly not singers or dancers but they look like they’re having so much fun and I really believe that they’re on a greek island that’s the site of Aphrodite’s fountain and god it’s just a perfect movie.

actually super basic archival preservation for your personal belongings

label and date everything

dont use adhesives on important stuff they degrade really quickly and can damage things

some paper is much more acidic than others and will degrade and damage things touching it. newspaper and construction paper are the worst and will mess up other papers theyre next to

printed photographs have chemicals that can react really badly to temperatures and dampness and you should keep them separate from other materials

soft and thin plastics also degrade really quickly (unless theyre archival grade) and are the worst to deal with

keep a copy of digital files in at least one separate location (flash drive or hard drive)

personally i think everyone should do this because its worth having a record of your life

a few more things

some inks will fade over time or bleed onto whatever theyre on. archival ink is a thing but there are also just some inks that are more stable

rubber bands break within a few years, paper clips and staples will rust and damage the paper if theyre not made of the right material

exposing photos or any material with colors to light for a while will obviously degrade them over time and theres not much you can to do restore them at that point

you lowkey should print out digital correspondence or materials if you want to keep them long term and be able to find them regardless of what happens to that email domain, website etc. its not uncommon to have printed out email threads in archival collections

these seem to have been more common in the 70s-90s but those photo albums with thin plastic and slight adhesive pages are terrible and will damage your photos and make them stuck forever

this is what acidic paper does to anything its touching after a few decades so watch out

home-burned CD's/DVD's degrade in like 10 to 20 years. flash drives/SSD's need to be powered up now and again to be able to retain their data without getting corrupted (they generally only guarantee data for 1 year without power, although data might stay uncorrupted for a lot longer). Hard drives are more reliable over a longer time of storage.

(i transferred all my old school projects and photos and data and pirated stuff from binders full of burned dvd's to hard drives a few years back and only like half of the files were still recoverable after ~15 years).

All my family photos, everything from school and my early adult years, there was too much humidity and it all fused into a big brick of crackly plastic. im so done with seeing articles about kids and screen time that doesnt mention parent behaviors even once. “kids are always on their phones” so are the parents! which the kids look to for how they should behave! ipad babies didn’t chose to only play on their ipads, thats what their parents gave them!

an anecdotal example: when i was a kid, all my parents would do in their minimal free time was watch tv and then they would be surprised when in my sister and i’s minimal free time we would also only watch tv/play video games. they scolded us for not reading books, but they never read books. they scolded us for not going outside but they never went outside.

“kids are always on their damn phones” my mom is in her 60s and opens up candy crush anytime she’s sitting — it isnt just the kids
