AH HELLO oh god i’m so sorry but i have a lot of headcanons about their relationship as just Guys and those hcs have existed since the dawn of my time as an alberich stan so you’ve sadly activated my essay trap card. fuck. i promise i will put a tl;dr at the end here that is Just my opinion on the ship and nothing else but i HAVE to geek about their background and how they met and stuff first okay here we go please forgive me—
i’m so sorry but it is IMPORTANT that i give some backstory here for my views on the ship and how i imagine them interacting in general.
ahem. i have a shitload of theories about the blood star and the formless mother, and personally headcanon that mohg views the thorn sorcerers as sort of cousins to his congregation because of the link between the star and the mother. to set some foundation here.
now, the recusants and the bloody fingers are both invasion factions, but i like to believe alberich learned the art of red phantom projection from the dynasts rather than the recusants, given how the rose church is sited in liurnia, and that is where you pick up all of alberich’s spells and weaponry.
enter varre: mister guy who is so eager to please lord mohg and find new little lambs to serve him. alberich is the PERFECT candidate for a bloody finger. he’s got a bone to pick with the world as it is, is merciless and unflinching with his murders, but still keeps his heart and mind open. he’s an optimist. he has to be for his survival. (not to mention my personal hc is that he killed his maiden right off the fucking bat after meeting her, which is certainly a plus.) so i hc varre met and attempted to seduce alberich into mohg’s congregation rather similar to how he does the tarnished in game.
now, the issue is that varre notably teaches the tarnished how to invade Before going into the details of lord mohg’s congregation, and considering alberich invades under his own moniker rather than the bloody finger epithet, it would seem varre failed in completely recruiting him. imagine his indignant disgust when he shares the art of invasion, offers a seat amongst mohg’s ranks, and is told, “no thanks, freak!”
it’s a complete embarrassment. it’s absolutely infuriating. and personally i like to hc that alberich yoinked the pureblood knight’s medallion and found his way to the mausoleum grounds as well, further humiliating poor varre. in this way, alberich more or less becomes his greatest mistake.
the trick here being that alberich knows the underground rivers well (long story from another headcanon), and, again, mohg views the thorn sorcerers as kin. so he manages to find his way around with decent ease, and kills his way further into the heart of the mausoleum than an outsider ought to be. i hc that ansbach, head of war as he was at the time, had been observing alberich for a while with the original intent of dispatching him by force, but in the end rather being charmed by his bloodthirsty positivity. and so, with his own good manners and kind attitude winning alberich over in turn, HE ends up being the one who ushers him to the heart of the mausoleum.
the good news is that mohg likes alberich, and doesn’t mind him hanging around even without the proper bloody finger epithet. but in the end, ansbach is the one credited with bringing alberich to mohg’s attention, and alberich ends up being one of varre’s most embarrassing regrets.
and SO now we reach their relationship. alberich is a tease and he can be cheeky and vulgar and he knows varre is PISSED that he didn’t go through with the bloody finger ritual and totally made a fool of him. but the terrible truth is that he also wants people to like him. he’s been so traumatised by those that would mock and shame him that he now rather desperately searches everywhere for those that won’t. i like to hc he bothers varre more than varre approaches him because of this, and varre is honestly fucking sick of this guy and would rather not be reminded of his failures, but at the same time…
well, i hc varre doesn’t really have a lot of friends. he’s nasty, he’s cruel, he’s jealous, and he’s clingy over mohg. most people leave him be after a certain amount of shit talking. but alberich is a unique case in that he’s already seen varre at his worst, so anything else is just closer to his best. he’s been driven as mad as he can get by insults that the surface-level types that varre spits sort of bead right off his feathers. and as much as varre can’t stand what the guy represents, he also can’t deny it feels nice to have someone that continues to engage with him even after seeing him at his nastiest.
THUS a certain love-hate dynamic is formed. varre gets clingy with the people he likes and he both loathes alberich and gets clingy over him. and alberich in turn is just glad to have someone he can bother and chatter at and who will give him little errands to occupy his time.
OKAY BACKSTORY OVER NOW HERE’S MY ACTUAL OPINION/HEADCANONS:
personally, i don’t ship them romantically. my interp of alberich is very poly but also very traumatised from many failed relationships, and so he tends to keep an emotional distance (but doesn’t mind cheeky physical relationships). he enjoys varre’s company, wouldn’t mind getting physical with him, but he can’t help but notice the way varre’s attitude slowly changes from one type of insane to another with time. it’s awkward as hell, but a friend is a friend. that’s how i personally see their relationship.
BUT. assuming a romantic ship Is a thing between them (because i cannot lie i am truly such a sucker for multishipping and aus), i think this dynamic of sorts would carry through to a Proper ship, just terribly amplified. alberich likes to bother the people he likes and this goes thousandfold for the people he’s actually in relationships with, which means he gets doting, he gets physical, he gets guard dog-y, and he gets very starstruck and rose-tinted. and varre, of course, is the type who needs validation to live and thrives on (if not goes a little nuts over) people who offer him that sort of attention. clinginess to the max, jealousy to the max, but also anxiety to the max — a petty sort of “so who’s that BITCH you were talking to” type paranoia. it’s toxic as hell, but not necessarily because they are cruel to each other, but rather because they exacerbate each other’s uniquely fucked-up neuroses. guys who go insane not over each other, but because of each other.
(… all that said i also admittedly have an itty bitty silly hc that varre is sort of yucky in the way that he neglects personal hygiene more than he should [i mean, come on, that garb? greasy hair?] and alberich, blind as he is, is keenly sensitive with his other senses… such as smell. varre you simply Have to take a bath before boyfriend time or he WILL gag at your stank and you’ll Both be embarrassed.)
