I was recently asked for some tips on how to start upcycling, and I ended up making a “toolkit” list. Since upcycling has grown in popularity, I thought others might benefit from a starting point for a craft that usually has very little structure. Sooo here’s my unprofessional ✨ beginner upcycler’s toolkit ✨!!

you absolutely do not need a ton of money or resources to DIY, so optional stuff on the list will be ** starred ^—^

the beginner’s toolkit

- Fabric scissors (ONLY use them to cut fabric, this is why normal scissors won’t work)

- A rotary cutter**

- A basic sewing kit (including chalk, a measuring tape, clips or pins, etc. I prefer clips over pins but you do you, you can also use Bobby pins!)

- Acrylic paint OR Fabric paint (or both, paint markers also work. there’s fabric paint that glows in the dark!! :D)

- An iron to heat set with (for when you paint stuff, only really necessary for bottoms and tops in my personal experience. If you don’t plan on doing any painting, this is optional)

- A hot glue gun** (kinda not required?? it makes things a lot easier, but I’m sure you could manage without one)

- Fabric glue

- E6000 glue** (often used in cosplay when working with EVA foam)

- Fun stuff to decorate with (beads, buttons, lace, chains, jump rings, jewels, grommets, pins, fake flowers, whatever you want really)

- Clothes, accessories, scrap fabric, etc

additional tips

1) LEARN TO SEW!! You don’t even need a sewing machine, hand sewing is more than enough! You can do everything a machine can!!

2) To add onto the first tip, learning some basic garment construction and how to read patterns is helpful. Even if you don’t plan on sewing full garments from scratch, knowing how clothes are put together is a valuable bit of information to have!! I can look at an inspo pic and sort of piece it together, even without a pattern.

3) Utilize what you have on hand before buying more supplies!! I found some extra plain white buttons and painted them myself for the jeans above- I spend exactly $0 on most of my projects. If there is something you need or want that you don’t already have, try finding it secondhand first.

4) If you want to paint on your clothes, either find fabric paint, add fabric medium to your paint, or make sure to heat set after you finish painting

5) If you thrift, start looking at the stuff on the rack not for what it is, but for what you could turn it into. A too-tight pair of jeans could become a vest or a bag, leg/arm warmers, etc etc. Think outside the box, be creative! Use things in ways they weren’t intended!!

6) as you gain more skills and see more stuff you like, you might decide to level up your upcycle game and invest in some additional tools! Some common ones I see are grommet presses, higher quality hot glue guns, sewing & embroidery machines, mini irons made specifically for sewing and crafting, airbrushes, etc. it’s a pretty similar set of skills and tools to what you’d see in cosplay crafting.

7) incorporate other skills you have into your projects! Can you crochet? Add some to a garment! Do you make jewelry? Add some cool charms to a hat! Can you draw or paint? Go ham on a pair of jeans! The only limit is your imagination and the depths of your Pinterest rabbit holes

Blerds 🤓🤎🤎🤎🤎🤎

Being a blerd is cool with liking the stuff that we know now in our adulthood. However, back then, it wasn't cool at the time within our childhood....

Being a black person in the nerd/geek community can be interesting because of our melanin and liking superheroes & anime. Although the stigma of prejudice and racism for us is not gonna go away.....

What I like being a blerd is that there is so much stuff to explore in movies, tv shows, etc. Everything under the sun, which we recognize that we black people are here to have fun....

I liked the stuff that probably was weird to everyone back then until now, how it is that there is nothing to worry about to be found.....

So, all in all, you don't have to be ashamed for liking the stuff you like as a child even though it's always been your hobbies & passion. But still that is being a black nerd is all about being compassion.
