Lualay was born in Menzoberranzan. She belonged to House Mizzrym, famous for its illusion magic, as a result of which she had a great talent for magic from a very young age. As a child, she was very obedient, not too emotional or affectionate, and was considered a perfect baby drow.
But the years passed, and the members of her family started to notice that something was wrong. Lualay wasn't interested in anything except talking to herself and listening to the conversations of others. She wasn't even listening for information, which would be quite useful in the Underdark; she was just listening for the sounds of voices. Lualay didn't have any ambitions and wasn't interested in power. She was just... there.
Of course, it did piss off the majority of her family and teachers in the wizard academy. But in their eyes she was so pathetic that they started to find the situation kind of funny (and they couldn't get rid of her, even though they tried). So she became the butt of most jokes but was mostly left alone to freely roam Menzoberranzan.
Lualay definitely wasn't happy at the time. She didn't really care if the others laughed at her, but she lived with a deep sense of dissatisfaction, like something was missing in her life. She was a Disney princess waiting to sing her "I want" song, not even knowing what a song was.
During one of her walking-around sessions, she heard a very unusual sound. Well, sounds. They were all connected with each other, changing their height unexpectedly, and Lualay had never heard anything like this before. And at this exact moment, something inside her moved.
She froze in place, listening to those sounds, and a strange, terrifying feeling was filling her body.
"My chest hurts. Have somebody stabbed me?", she thought, even though she knew she was okay. She pressed her hands to her chest, hungrily listening to the sounds.
"They make me feel like something terrible has happened".
With this sudden understanding Lualay collapsed to the ground, feeling something streaming down her face. She cried for the first time since she was a baby.
"I want to leave, I want to leave, I'm dying", she thought, unable to breath and choking with tears. The sounds weren't bad. They were so beautiful, they were the most beautiful thing she'd ever heard. They filled her body, tearing it apart from the inside, and Lualay felt a mixture of grief and something light and rapt.
Before that she hadn't even yelled at anyone once in her life, she barely ever laughed, and now she was lying on the cave floor, crushed with emotion.
Suddenly, for a second everything became quiet. Then the sound of someone's hurried footsteps echoed throughout the cave.
"Are you... alright, mistress?"
Lualay gasped for air and looked at the small, trembling boy before her. He was no older than her. Lualay noticed something in his hand.
"What was that? What did you do?", she let out a muffled cry, trying to calm down somehow.
That was the first time Lualay has ever heard music.
