Rhett downed his tequila after clinking his shot glass with Maelle’s. “I can think of worse ways to unwind than drinking with you,” Rhett said, smiling, “even if I do see some of my students here.” He looked around the bar, avoiding stares from familiar faces. The place had hardly changed since he had attended Crowfeld college, and he was surprised it had even survived so long considering how everything else in the town seemed to be dying. He brought his attention back to Maelle, blue eyes meeting hers. “Bad day?” He asked. He would never press her for details—he knew better than most that in their line of work a bad day wasn’t always something to talk about, even while tipsy.

“Well, aren’t you the charmer,” she chuckled, shaking her head. “But that’ll make you the cool professor. Before you know it, students will start buying you drinks to suck up. And some whiskey sure as hell beats an apple, right?” She could tell some people, who she assumed were current students, were watching, but she was still just amused by the concept. She raised her eyebrows as his eyes caught hers, reminding herself that those eyes had ears, too. “It’s my own fault for trying to sneak in to meetings that aren’t mine to attend, I just don’t see the problem with another pair of eyes on a case.” She gave him a look, wanting to stay vague while they were in public.

☆ ⁛ ⁚ ⁛   emerson gave her a polite smile. “ i just hope you have a ride home. i know these guys could be a bunch of grabby jerk-offs. ” he informed as his eyes slid comically to his sides as emphasis. “ oh, right… ” it was nearly hours since he’d forgotten the aftermath of that night with levi. the guilt was slowly creeping back and with a shiver of his spin, it nearly confirmed it. he stopped from fading away from his thoughts as his focus retreated back to the older woman. “ sorry. ”

“Oh, don’t worry. I’ve trained myself to kick someone’s ass even stumbling drunk. If I can just hold on to my balance, I can hold my own. But you’re very sweet for worrying.” She smiled at him. “I have a few friends from work who could pick me up if I go too far.” She watched his focus change, wondering if he knew Carlson. “Were you close to him?” It felt like they nearly had every kid from the college in the department following the death. “Sorry for bringing it up. You’re just here to have a good time, I’m sure.”

Rhett sipped at the whiskey-on-ice in his hand, the cool burn of the aged alcohol resonating deep within his chest. He grinned at his companion, one eyebrow quirked above the other. “If you’re too old, what does that make me?” He teased. He set his whiskey on the counter, absentmindedly wiping at the condensation with his fingertips. In the bar’s low light, he could barely see the thin, exposed tan line where his wedding ring was supposed to be. “If I remember correctly, you have a couple more years left. Once you hit thirty-two, though, it’s wine and whiskey, or nothing at all.” Despite the glimmer of truth in his joke, he motioned for the bartender to bring them two more shots. He picked one up, and passed the other to her. “To getting old?”

She smirked as she looked over at him, resting her head on her fist. The alcohol hadn’t quite made it straight to her head yet, so she was taking the time before everything went a little blurry to judge if he even counted as too old, despite her declaration. “Well, the good news is, I’m more than ready for the wine part. And get in my fair share of whiskey. Though, I don’t think I’ve completely given up on the dangers of tequila.” She grinned as he ordered more shots, not giving a thought to her struggle with the last one. “But never too old for shots.” She tapped her glass against his before tilting her head back, swallowing the burn far better this time. “I’m rationalizing that we both work hard and that I deserve to take two shots after a long day.”

☆ ⁛ ⁚ ⁛   emerson wasn’t really fond of bars… actually not at all. the social gathering aspect wasn’t his cup of tea but he thought he’d be able to find levi around and keep an eye of him there. with the swarm of college students hammering into their drinks, it was a matter of time when the little brunette would be lost. not long after, he took a seat in defeat, as he stared at a much older woman taking her shot like a champ. “ woah! slow down! i could tell you must’ve had a tough night. ”

She grinned at the concern coming from the young man, shaking her head as the bartender cleared away the shot glass. She shrugged. “Oh, what’s one shot or two?” She chuckled, tilting her head towards the ceiling before looking back over to him. “Every night’s felt like a tough night, since... You know.” She pursed her lips, feeling odd even speaking about it now that she had her own secrets to keep for the time being, since she had called Rhett.

Maëlle did her best to smile, though she didn’t feel the expression quite reaching her eyes. “Well, if it makes you feel any better, they’re actually not passing around the cell phone to everyone. We have these rules about privacy and only relevant information getting passed around the department. And even then, it’s really only the people assigned to the case.”

    “ Do you believe that everything happens for a reason ? “ clarissa inquired, her brows furrowing as she sat at the booth closed case files she had ‘borrowed’ from her uncle’s file cabinet. “ I’ve read so many of these things that people confess to doing things because they were bored. That’s it, they weren’t robbing things cause they needed it just because they were bored.” it irked her the guts that some people had to rob small shop owners because they were tired of their life. groaning in frustration the blonde gave a defeated sigh before reaching for her mug. “ I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to go off on a rant.” rissa apologized with a small smile. “ I get carried away at times– I ‘suppose.”

Maëlle had been flipping through her notebook, only half-paying attention until she heard her starting to give some specific details of crimes. She looked up, setting her own notebook aside. “Um, where’d you get these?” A few quick glances told her the cases were, at least, closed. She shook her head, reaching for her own mug of coffee. “You know what? I don’t want to know. For now,” she tried to give her a stern look, but smiled, a bit of sadness sneaking in. “It’s easy to get carried away, since it’s so hard to know why the bad stuff happens. Hell, that’s why I ended up with my job. I wanted answers.”

“Okay, so, the place around the corner from here is only good on Mondays because the guy who burns the coffee doesn’t work those days. Otherwise the Starbucks on the other side of town is what keeps me alive. It’s not the best, but it gets the job done and you don’t feel like you’re chewing it.”

Maëlle tipped her head back, letting the shot slide down her throat. Her body felt the slightest shiver, the threat of her body rejecting that much alcohol in one go, but she slammed the small glass on the wooden surface of the bar, letting out her breath in a big huff. “Oh god, I better not be getting too old for shots already.” She couldn’t believe she was still drinking at a college bar, but it wasn’t like Crowfeld left her with a lot of options to drink cheaply.
