Hii! So Iâve been starting to write some cod ficâs (non posted) and I wanted to know if you could possibly post more Scottish slang or the most misspelled Scottish slang?
DISCLAIMER: IâM ONLY TELLING YOU WHAT I KNOW ABOUT ALL THIS THAT I PERSONALLY LEARNED FROM MY PARENTS, IF ANYONE HAS ANY CORRECTIONS PLEASE FEEL FREE TO TACK THEM ON
I can give you some common words that specifically I use day to day to make it seem more natural in ur writing!
Willnae - will not/wonât
Shouldnae - should not/shouldnât
Couldnae - could not/couldnât
Wouldnae - would not/wouldnât
Wasnae - was not/wasnât
Nae - no, but only in the context of nae bother, nae danger
(Are you noticing the pattern?)
Much like the first three I posted about these are just in the same vain, not interchangeable and theyâre just easy, subtle changes to show someone âhey look theyâre Scottishâ
Now onto my personal favourite words that may come in handy:
Bonnie - pretty/beautiful
Eejit - idiot, this oneâs fun, common insult for us
Dour - grim/gloomy, can be used for most things tbh ie âwork is pure dour the dayâ
Wheesht - shhh, or in a different context, shut the fuck up
Haud/Hauld - hold, the spellings I believe are interchangeable, haud is more common these days tho I think
Greet - cry, the best way to use this is âdinnae greetâ if you really wanna go full force with the slang
Peely wally - looking unwell/sick, this is my personal favourite, it can be used outside of the proper context, ie âthat looks a bit peely wally eh?â
Pure - very, but use this sparingly, it doesnât always make sense when you throw it in willy nilly
Okay thatâs all I can think of off the top of my head for now but if you need any advice on what context you can use these in thatâll make sense then feel free to dm me and I can talk it through with you :)
