Kent State shootings

When looking through photographs to choose my favourite images i came across this familar photograph. 

This is different from the other photographs because there is no element of humour whatsoever it’s actually the complete opposite and really makes you feel a strong emotions. 

You can really feel the despair on the womans face, almost as if you were there and also the ignorance of the people around them in the photograph.

I know that this photograph was very spontaneous as i did a lot of research on it and found out that he did not care about the composition of the photograph it was more about the message behind it which is kind of similar to Bresson’s photograph and no doubt inspired Filo.

What is different in this case is that for me when you look at both photographs, this instantly impacts you and is very striking. Rather than Bresson’s which is different because you really have to take 10 minutes to understand the meaning of the photograph.

This was the photograph I did for my image analysis, it links really well with first image and is a really good way to end my blog as it comes full circle.

I chose this image because I wanted to show a variety of different subject matters in the photographs. 

This photograph seems very spontaneous, it also seems to be taken by someone a lot taller because of the angle and that it isnt eye level with the girl. 

Most likely the girl might have been yawning a lot and the photographer just waited until she did it again and shot it. 

When thinking about the context it is difficult to tell where they are, but judging by there clothes to me it looks like they were just at church which makes it even funnier in a way. It appears that the little girl is exhausted after a few hours at mass which is almost a streotypical thing a child to do. 

I think the photographer really captured this photograph and every time I look at this photograph I laugh.

Also another photo I enjoyed mostly because the humorous element in it.

This is not usually something that you would see everyday and is different from the other photographers beforehand because I think that when he was taking this photograph it wasnt planned at all and he didnt realise that this would be the outcome of the photograph.

The photograph was most likely a staged photography initially as we can see this through the composition and how all the other nuns are stationary. But when taking this photograph one of the nuns decided to turn around and he snapped the photograph at the right moment; the decisive moment.

One of my favourites would have to photographer Craig Buchan. 

What I like about these not only are they in black & white which I like because it’s more effective but also because he adds an element of humour into it. 

Adding an element of humour into makes the photograph more enjoyable and is also something that I haven’t seen Bresson do.

I felt that he took inspiration from Bresson but also added his own twist by incorporating animals. 

Especially in the first photograph, you can see the moment before and you can already predict what is going to happen next. However this photograph looks more staged than the other two because there is no blur effect. With the other two you can clearly tell it was very spontaneous.

From the photographs it is difficult to tell where they are situated but it seems to be contextualized in a lot of street photography which is what Bresson was known for.

My initial idea was just to type in to google about the decisive moment. These are the first few photographs that actually came up but what I noticed first was that they were all in black and white, possibly because they were in film and that’s all they had, also possibly taken inspiration from Bresson since all his were in black & white.

The guest judges for the decisive moment category were Anna Kuperberg, Huy Nguyen, Niki Boon and Tyler Wirken (thank you!!) with the final selection curated by Kirsten Lewis Bethmann and Jenna Shouldice...

I wanted to explore more on the decisive moment and how different photographer were inspired by him and also there own interpretation. 

I came across this website that had non famous photographers and was just some photographs of the decisive moment that they entered into a competition.

Anytime I would find information about Bresson, the “decisive moment” would come up and that he was the person candid street photographer that made this popular.

For me it was difficult to understand what the decisive moment actually meant because there was a lot of articles that explained it differently. It seemed like a pretty simple concept until I started to look at other photographs and sometimes I wouldnt be able to spot it or undertsand the proccess behind.

But when I came across this diagram, It helped me understand it a lot better. 

It can be basically summed up in this sentence;  “ The decisive moment refers to capturing an event that is spontaneous, where the image represents the essence of the event itself.”

When doing my research about the background of the context of the photograph, I found out that it was in Paris and that the railway station was actually a famous setting for 20th century painters like Monet (first picture) and Calliebotte (second image).

From the painting above it is hard to see the similarities between these and the one Bresson took mostly because it is taken from different angles and they are also paintings.

While I was doing my research, I thought it would a great idea to look in the library to see if I could get information on Bresson from a variety of sources and not just the internet. 

I only found one photograph and that was the one above, although it didnt have a lot of information it was just the images but it was really great to get a sense of the collection of photographs it was with. 

What I found interesting was that in the photobook it was one of the very few that was untitled and just had the year.

I found out that he said it was essiential to give an approximate date to each photograph to contexualize it in it’s time. 

The entire photobook was not a sociological study of the city, the important thing lay elsewhere in roaming freely at the total disposable of the eye.

This image has a lot of symbolism, once you really start to analyse it and look closer.

For example, the figure a leaping dancer in the poster replicates and mimicks the man in the foreground of the photograph. 

The ladder also replicates railway tracks which links in with the poster in the background that says “Railosky.”

The last symbolism I could spot was the effect of the ladder in the water, creating circular shapes that replicates the spare, discarded metal pieces.

This image actually caught my eye last time and was one I was going to choose for my image analysis last time, so this is a great opportunity for me to be able to actaully go into detail and research about this image.

This was actually one of his most successful photographs for many reasons but I will go into more of them in the next few posts.

Top 100 Of The Most Influential Photos Of All Time

With millions of pictures taken every day we can easily get lost in the vast world of images. That's why TIME magazine decided to create a list of 100 most influential pictures ever taken. They teamed up with curators, historians, and photo editors around the world for this task.

This was a useful website that I used last time for image analysis that I found really easy to use. So I thought that maybe it would help me with a starting point.

Blog entry

Today in uni we were given the assignment to create a blog on a chosen image of our choice and to go into detail about the background etc. I feel that this is a new way to show my interest in my chosen image.
