This was the first and only time Mel Ferrer, Audrey’s husband, directed his wife in a film. They had starred in two movies together, War and Peace (1956) and Mayerling (1957). They would collaborate one more time on the film Wait Until Dark, where Audrey was the lead actress and Mel was a producer. Wait Until Dark was their most successful collaboration. You could also count Mel’s brief appearance in Paris When it Sizzles, but blink and you may miss him.

Green Mansions was critical and box office failure. The budget for the movie was $3,288,000 yet it only made $2,390,000 at the box office. This may have been the reason Audrey and Mel didn’t star and direct in another film together. The movie is rather lackluster but I would still recommend it, just to watch Audrey and Anthony Perkins. Audrey is stunning in the film and, although, Mel didn’t flourish as a director he did know how to capture his wife’s ethereal beauty on screen. Truthfully, it’s one of Audrey’s films I watch the least. But, I love the photos taken during production. Especially, those by Bob Willoughby.
