“Mags, you know more than anyone that half the reason I even come over here is for the food.” His expression was cheeky, because what they both actually knew was that he loved Maggie, and her family, and he had no intention of ever losing that relationship.

“Why do you think I make so much?” Maggie said with a laugh. “I know where your loyalties lie,” Maggie said with a wink. Doc was as much her family as any related by blood and she wouldn’t have it any other way.

Maggie let out a bark of laughter. “Send him my way. I’m pregnancy baking, anything I crave gets made so there’s plenty of food here.” She looked at him expectantly. “What I’m getting at here is I need you to take some food home for you and Mary.”

“Pretty sure you just described Hayden,” Doc pointed out with a sly grin on his face. Even when he wasn’t around, Doc made sure that his best friend was being thrown under the bus at a moment’s notice. “Or me, if I’ve been awake for too long, and suddenly decide I’m never going to shower again.”

“Poor dear needs a nap and a full belly then?” Maggie said with a laugh. “I can only imagine how much someone so tall eats. I wonder if that's why he’s so brusk. He’s just always hungry.”

Doc’s face shifted into a large grin. One that wasn’t mischievous or tainted, just genuinely happy. What was it about children and their still-learning English that cut straight through into his heart and reminded him that everything wasn’t so horrible after all. That even though his job was shifting into something he had never signed up for, and that people in his life continued disappearing, there were still things in the world worth holding onto.

“They might just be the cutest things I have ever seen in my life.”

A smile spread across Maggie’s face as she watched Doc react to her children. Doc and Mary were such an important part of their life and as Maggie’s hand moved automatically to her growing belly, she hoped the same would be said for the next. She felt more alone these days than not and the future seemed to loom over her with too many unknowns to fathom. Pushing the thought away, she focused her attention back to Doc. 

“Cutest little demons until it’s naptime, or bath time, or time to eat their peas.” She said, scrunching her nose at her eldest.

Doc did his best to not mention that he was positive Mary would look excellent pregnant. The less he kept that train of thought going, the better. “You need one of those claw things that helps you pick stuff up.” He mimed it out with his hands, which was pointless, given that it was basically just an extendable hand. “As for Benji, well, I wouldn’t mind babysitting.” And he didn’t.

Maggie nodded enthusiastically, “That is absolutely what I need, be a dear and get me one.” She said with a laugh as Benji ran into the room. “I want to sweepover with Uncle Duc and Annie Mawee! SWEEOPOVERRRRR!” He screamed running through the room little Charlie toddling behind him chanting “Sweep! Sweep! Sweep!”

Doc grimaced as he put the teacup to his lips, his entire body contorting in pain that he would never experience. “The more you talk about giving birth, the more I’m aware of the fact that it’s a really excellent thing that Mary doesn’t want kids. I dunno what I’d do if I had to watch her go through that.”

“The actual birth at this point isn’t even what I’m worried about, love. That’ll be a breeze. 20p says the baby just falls right out. It’s the being as big as a house and not being able to touch my toes that I’m not looking forward to.” She said with a laugh. “Plus, I think between the two I’ve got and the one on the way you and Mary are covered in the if I ever thing I might want one department. Take Benji for a night, you’ll change your mind again.” She teased.

WHEN: Monday, 17 January, 1981; afternoon   WHERE: Bosworth Baking Co, Puddlemere WHO: Merrick Wilder & Alice Shafiq, Emmeline Vance, Holliday Hawkins 

“We’re not open!” Merrick called to whomever walked into the bakery, bells chiming to indicate someone opened the door. “Sorry, still closed. But we should be up and running soon,” he added, back still to the person as he finished sanding a wooden beam. 

“Oh, well— I guess I’ll just take this homemade lunch and this niece and nephew and find some other Uncle Merrick to dote on them,” Maggie said with a teasing tone to which Benji and Charli giggled loudly at how silly mumma and Ick could be.

“You know, the more I think about it, the more I dread the birth of this one. Ready to pop in the middle of August sounds miserable. What was I thinking?” Maggie shook her head in disbelief. She had months to go before she would actually have to worry about it, but from time to time the thought struck her and she shuddered at the thought.

It was not the first time Bobby Wilder had played designated apparator at a Mary and Clem party. It was not the first time, and he was content to admit to himself that it would likely not be the last. But after one particularly eventful trip home (then again, weren’t they all?), he was at least hoping for a break between trips, maybe even one long enough to enjoy a full butterbeer. It was all he could think of as he stepped onto the roof, surprised yet again – impressed, really – by the size of the crowd that had awaited his return.

Maggie watched as Bobby reappeared once again, always the knight and shining armor to so many, friends and strangers alike. It was one of his many wonderful qualities, but one she feared might one day burn him out. “You going to enjoy yourself this go round, at least?”

“Admirable, too,” said Bailey. “Not sure I could be a mum myself.” She only had so much patience for people, let alone children that require not just patience but a loving touch.  “And you have a couple of children already, so that seems like twice the work even. Just never ever ask me to babysit. It will not work out.” 

“Well that’s alright too, love. Everybody wants different things for themselves. So long as those things aren’t murdering and hurting other people I think you’ll be alright.” Maggie said with a smile. “And you’re off the hook with that one,” she laughed. “We are well and truly stocked in the babysitting department.

Mary marveled at how effortlessly good at being a mother Molly was. “And then I suppose it has its own challenges.” Mary raised her brows, communicating ideas with Molly that were best kept out of a rambunctious child’s mind, especially at the holidays when sugar was in no short order. “Raising kids who can do magic too, that is.” Havoc was more like it. As if children didn’t get into enough without wands and magic making it easier.

Bailey snorted at that. “You would have made a good Healer,” said Bailey. She truly believed that, too. Molly had the caring aspects that Bailey lacked. Of course, what Bailey lacked in being kind and thoughtful as a Healer, she more than made up for in her actual abilities to do the job. “What’s that like? Having someone who comes home to you at the end of the day?”

Molly smiled fondly. “Thank you, love. It was something I really saw myself doing. I even thought about going back to school while I was still pregnant with Billy, but once I held him in my arms, I knew at home was where I wanted to be.” She had nothing against working mums, she thought they were amazing actually. Her own mum worked while taking care of her and her brothers, but it just wasn’t the life she saw for herself.

When: 06 January 1981 Where: The Burrow Who: Molly Weasley

It had been 12 days since Molly had told her brothers she was pregnant and they were still the only two to know. She knew that based on her history with Bill and Charlie that it wouldn’t be long until she started showing and she would have to tell people soon, but the more people who knew the more real it became that she was bringing another child into these unprecedented times.

Arthur— of course, she had to start with Arthur. Then her parents, then his parents, and Bilius of course. Then they would tell their friends and the rest of their family. The never-ending Weasley family which she was about to make even bigger. 

Over the last 12 days, if Molly ever found herself alone, even if for only a moment, the tears welled up again. The fear crept in and the doubts that she could provide for everyone the way that they needed, that she would be equipped to raise a child in such an uncertain world. Molly was afraid. She had been afraid since her birthday and wasn’t sure if she’d ever not be afraid again.

But in true Molly Beatrice Prewett Weasley fashion, she pulled herself together for the benefit of her friends, her family, and most importantly her boys, and began to plan. She had a lot of people to visit over the next few days, and lots of baking was still to be done.

Guilt really was fickle. Hollie’s had her reaching out with a gentle hand, twirling a few loose locks of Molly’s around thin digits. They turned to spiral curls and a smile appeared from the depths, one only revealed by meters and meters of comfort. The sort of comfort Molly Weasley could dig out of any lost soul.

“There’s no should have beens with me. Who knows? It could’ve pushed me further, which also would have been my fault.” She exhaled a shaky breath that’d been held inside damaged lungs for too eternities. Hollie could breathe again, now that her insecurities had been thrown to the surface. There was no judgement in sight. She could always be herself in this Burrow, looking at that dang clock.

“I’m eager to finally think of others first. Like you, Molls.”

It’d never be a sin to prioritize yourself, but self care and selfishness were entirely different things.

Molly loved and loved and loved, it was what she was best at. Giving love to those who needed it. Casting no judgment on those still finding their way. “My mum always says there's no rush to finding who you are.” She said softly, it was something that she had always held near and dear; an important piece of advice that Molly truly took to heart. 

“So with that in mind love, I want you to remember to be kind to yourself on this new adventure, and it’s alright if it doesn’t happen overnight.” Molly pressed a gentle kiss to Hollie’s head and the sound of voices waking up from a nap filled the Burrow once again.

“I’m sure magic helps loads though,” Mary thought aloud, reaching for a bowl and a whisk (she had to covertly search ‘what does a whisk look like’ on her iFlown when no one was looking). “Or, is that rude to assume? It feels rude to assume. I just remember my grandparents looking very tired when they’d have to pick up after me. I wonder if it would’ve helped them to know a spell that would do it for them.”

“I don’t think that’s rude,” Molly said thinking it was an entirely fair question. “Especially not coming from someone who had lived in both worlds.” Molly thought about the question. “Magic helps immensely, but just because we have it doesn’t mean that it’s the solution for everything, isn’t that right, Bill,” Molly said with a soft smile. “Thas wight, Mumma.” He said happily, handing Mary their next ingredient. “It’s still important to teach them how to do things for themselves, especially before they have their wands. So we use a nice balance of magic and good old-fashioned hard work to pick up after ourselves and do everyday things.”
