Scene: Hunter Mountain. I was on a trip with my mom and niece. I don’t ski anymore. So to entertain myself during the day, I sat at the bar with a good book. And a woman cannot sit at a bar alone and not find people to talk to. I’ve proven that fact time and time again. But I digress. That is not part of the story but that is where I had been before we went to dinner.
After waiting about 30 minutes for a table, we were finally seated. I was perusing my menu when our waiter came over and started asking my niece what she wanted to drink. I lifted my head to find an incredibly handsome man staring back at me. (Whenever I’m with my niece, waiters assume she’s my child and always defer to me on what she’s allowed to order.) I caught my breath and suggested milk or juice for her. He then came over to my side, crouched down next to me and asked what I’d like. I ordered a Bombay Sapphire martini, straight up, dirty. (My all-time favorite fancy drink which I only occasionally treat myself to.) He introduced himself, took my mom’s order and off he went.
Throughout the entire meal, he was incredibly attentive and talkative. He asked where we were from which is pretty standard for people working at vacation spots. When I mentioned I lived in New York, he said he’d planned to visit soon and asked a bunch of question which I was more than happy to answer. I drew him maps and even wrote down my phone number for when he was in town, if he wanted someone to show him around.
We finished our meals and off we went back to our hotel. (Mom drove, in case you were wondering.) By the time we got home, I had a text from Bobby saying that he’d really enjoyed meeting me. And since he was off the next day, he wanted to meet up with me. I thought, sure he says that now after many drinks after work, why not? I told him I’d be at the lodge all day and that he could find me there.
And what do you know… he actually shows up. We spend the afternoon hanging out in the lodge, talking and laughing. When my mom and niece came in from skiing, he stayed and had a blast horsing around with my niece. We decided to have a low key dinner that night at a local pub and he joined us.
(Full disclosure: I went home with him that night. Not my finest moment, ditching my mother and niece for a guy. Also not fun paying for a cab all the way back to the hotel in the morning. I had a difficult time explaining that one to my niece but luckily she’s never brought it up again so I hope it was a non-event for her.)
Spending the night at his place was loads of fun. We stayed up all night talking, laughing, yada, yada, yada. When I left, he promised to visit me in New York.
And he kept his promise. But that’s a story for another time.
