The first of the two stories I wrote this weekend for the Head of the Charles.
In the state that was home to Emily Dickinson and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, where Edgar Allan Poe was born and where Robert Frost died, critics of new national education goals fear that poetry will become an endangered pursuit. The alarm is being sounded by the conservative Pioneer Institute, long an opponent of the “Common Core’’ standards promoted by the Obama administration.

Ellen DeGeneres hadn’t said yes or no to Esteban Barriga’s prom proposal by Tuesday. But it may not even matter. On Friday, Barriga will put on a tuxedo and ride with friends in a limousine to Maynard High School’s prom at the Sheraton Framingham Hotel & Conference Center. He’ll wear a pink flower on his lapel to match his date’s dress. They’ll eat dinner at the hotel and dance the night away in an American rite of passage. To some, this might sound like a regular prom night. But for Barriga, a 17-year-old senior with autism, and his family, it is a dream come true.
Profiles of runners who will be raising money for local charities as well as pursuing their own goals in the Boston Marathon on April 21.
A young man sets out for a strange land to find himself. Along the way, he faces challenges that teach him about his heritage, values, and capabilities. No not Homer’s Odyssey. Instead of the cyclops and sirens, try Soviet Union soldiers and the mafia and you’ll get “Vodka Shot, Pickle Chaser,” David Kalis’s self-published memoir of his time in the Soviet Union from 1991 to the end of 1993. Kalis, a 45-year-old Newton alderman, lived in the Soviet Union for two and a half years after graduating from Tufts University, where he studied Soviet East European Studies. The Soviet Union he found confirmed much of what he studied and also showed him things he never imagined. His real-life thriller was published in March.
