I’ve been attempting to work on some new projects, but life has unfortunately gotten in the way! In the meantime, I’ve been working on pants. I’ve made my first muslin and will hopefully get some pictures of the fitting process, but I’m having a bit of difficulty fitting them to myself. My roommates are terribly unhelpful with this sort of thing.

The completed Constellation Dress. I got a lot of compliments. It was subtle enough to just be a cool dress, but once people saw the stars, their faces immediately lite up. My favorite part was their expression when they heard that I made it. The event at the Adler planetarium was really fun. Good number of events, booze was a little pricey, but that's to be expected. All in all a fun evening and a fun dress to make!
Finished the Constellation Dress! I'll post actual pictures of me wearing it after Thursday when I get all dolled up. I'm really pleased with how it turned out and I can't wait to show it off!
Front embroidery is done! I created a detailed "pattern" of where I wanted my constellations and just sat and sewed. Not true embroidery, because I wanted it to be lightweight. I'm also going to be adding some individual beads to the blank spaces. This took me around 6-7 hours.
The crepe layer is put together! This was taken in the middle of a fitting, so ignore how the bottom looks like shorts - I've fixed that, I swear. I was so excited to have that put together that I immediately sewed the chiffon and crepe together without thinking it through and I fucked up. I completly forgot and inner lining to hide the seams around the arms and neck. So I had to rip it apart (carefully) and I'll try again tomorrow!
Finally went fabric shopping today! I went to Textile Discount Outlet here in Chicago which is the coolest place in the world. That first picture is maybe one quarter of a room. And there are 12 rooms. 😁 The basement and the third floor have even more options/overstock. The first time I went I spent maybe an hour and a half just looking at everything. In addition to their huge selection, everything is really inexpensive and everyone who works there is really nice and knows the stock really well. I wound up getting navy blue chiffon and navy blue crepe for the Constellation Dress. I'm not sure how that will turn out, so I might try to find a light weight knit to replace the crepe. For two yards of each 60 inch material I spent about $26, which is about half as much as I would pay at JoAnn's for a smaller fabric. I also got 40 yards (!!!!) of black tulle to have in my arsenal, which I got for $20. I have plans to make a basic tulle skirt for going out in, hence the black knit and elastic. The rest of it will go toward petticoat making. The one thing I forgot to get was fabric for my corset, but I may order some specialty, thicker fabric online, or just wait until the next time I go. Next up is cutting my material!
I'm going to be so glad when I don't work weekends anymore mainly so I can sleep in on Sundays, but also because I used to literally sew all day during the weekends.
The secondary project I'm working on is a very basic corset. I'm making with with the use for shaping under historical clothes, rather than a decorative over corset. Probably going to be in a nice white or ivory color with a cotton lining. My roommate came home one day and asked why I was making a corset, and I respond "for the challenge of it." Which is true. I've always wanted to try my hand at one and now I have the time to! I'm using Butterick B4254 for the pattern, in the C style. While I cut size 8 for my size, I think I'll take it down a bit, because the 8 doesn't have any extra space to tighten. It just closes in the back. While I know I shouldn't just use a muslin with no boning for my sizing, I am a really lazy person sometimes and I hadn't order the boning yet.
Muslin for the Constellation Dress is made! Overall it fits pretty well, but I did add some space in the back armhole, as well as made some adjustments on the back neckline to make it lie flat. I also did a rough sketch out of my constellations on the muslin. (Which is faint in the last picture). I ultimately went with the classic zodiac with Ursa Major and Orion, becuase I think they are the most recognizable. Going out to get fabric either this week or next, depending on my schedule.
(Very) rough sketch up my upcoming project. I’m calling it the Constellation Dress, because I’m very good at being creative. Basic shift dress, chiffon layer over a base fabric, which I’m still picking. Navy blue to mimic the night sky, with gold star sequins arranged in the form of constellations, with thread embroidered constellation marks. I may get fancy and try and ombre the bottom of the chiffon to black, but idk yet.
Making it for an upcoming Adler After Dark. The theme is “Interstellar Speakeasy”, so I wanted something to somewhat resemble the 1920s silhouette, without having to do a drop waist, because I look terrible in those. Also, didn’t want to go full costume at a cocktail event.
I still have to get fabric, but I’m in the midst of modifying a pattern and creating a muslin.
