The spectacle around the Depp trial is being called a large-scale backlash to the MeToo movement, and I don’t disagree — but this is uniquely terrifying because I don’t think the mainstream MeToo movement was ever actually materially effective in the first place. In Walter Benjamin’s essay The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction, he writes that an oppressive structure “sees its salvation” in allowing the masses to express themselves freely in lieu of granting them their rights. Similarly, the mainstream MeToo movement offered temporary catharsis in place of systemic change; Hollywood play-acted a revolution so that its men could keep up their abuse unscathed. There is something phenomenally painful in watching a material backlash erupt in response to a movement that was never allowed to be anything more than aesthetic. Now that the state of discourse has moved forward without bringing women’s material conditions with it, men like Johnny Depp are able to benefit from violent systemic misogyny while posturing themselves as radical, anti-establishment activists. Recent events are not so much a pendulum swing as they are a pendulum being repeatedly beaten in one direction for fear it might one day gain a centimetre of ground.

So in love with how NBC Hannibal clearly references the Hannibal films but instead of taking them as an inspiration for Hannibal’s character, the parallels between the movies and the series always depict Will instead.

Like this scene. This is a visual reference to Hannibal Rising (2007), where Hannibal kills one of the men that ate his sister.

In the show it’s WILL taking Hannibal’s place.

After this scene in Hannibal Rising, Hannibal continues to eat the man’s cheeks.

Also, Will’s whole prison setup is a mirror of the setup in Silence of the Lambs (1991).

They could have done the obvious, which is link the tv show Hannibal to the movie Hannibals (which, to be fair, they did in S3b; Hannibal’s prison chic minimalism was very much inspired by Manhunter (1986)). But I find it so interesting that they chose to visually mirror Hannibal’s development in Will’s storyline!! They’re the same. Will is following in Hannibal’s footsteps, he’s tracing it back to where it all began to become him. Ugh

Ooh! I hope it’s ok for me to add some stuff about another character to this, because this also happens with Abel Gideon! Bryan Fuller said he specifically didn’t want their Hannibal to be too similar to movie Hannibal because then of course the audience couldn’t help but compare him to Anthony Hopkins’ portrayal and there was no way they could live up to that. Their Hannibal would look like a pale imitation. But! TV show Abel Gideon is similar to movie Hannibal in terms of body language and mannerisms. Because Abel Gideon is a pale imitation, but not of TV show Hannibal. He’s a pale imitation of what everyone thinks Hannibal is like! Hence, he’s a pale imitation of movie Hannibal!

The scene at the start of Prisoner of Azkaban in which Harry accidentally summons the Knight Bus after seeing Padfoot never fails to make me incredibly sad when I think about it. Sirius didn't even want to talk to Harry or try convincing him of his innocence, he just wanted to see him. Sirius had so many chances to try and convince Harry of his innocence, but all he wanted to do was kill Pettigrew and ensure Harry's safety. Him roaming Little Whinging, him hiding under the Quidditch Pitch bleachers during Gryffindor's matches, all he wanted to do was see Harry. He loves Harry so much, my heart aches.
