hot take but randy totally should have been cut and that was 100% for the best of the musical. Yes he was serving vocals, but it just was confusing- like ur watching a show about ponyboy and then bam act two starts and theres this random ass guy named randy and he’s in two scenes and he sings this super long song that slays but also like isnt advancing the plot in any way shape or form after maybe the first minute and a half, and you’re just not sure what his deal is and it takes focus from the main plot of the show. Condensing the ideas that he has and just giving them to cherry works much better.

And this isnt to say he’s bad in the book, but books inherently have more time to develop more ideas and characters, and a lot of randys relevance is explored in ponyboys mind, which we obviously cant see in the same way in a musical theater format.

Anyways randy doesnt deserve justice, and I will stand by this always.

I bet Bob can be so fucking charming when he wants to be. We only see his worst side because we see him through the eyes of the people who only, always, bear the brunt of his worst side. But I bet most of the time, to most people who aren’t greasers, he plays the role of golden boy very well.

He’s really good at making people like him, admire him, want to be him or be with him. He’s charismatic and suave and adept at social graces and good at winning people over; friends, girls, teachers, authority figures. Cherry is probably the envy of the entire female student body, and he makes her fall head over heels for him; makes her feel butterflies, makes her feel like the only girl in the world. He knows how to endear himself to her parents with a “sir, I care about your daughter very much” speech to her father, and an “I didn’t know Cherry had an older sister” that makes her mother blush. He’s the kind of guy who makes other boys feel cool for getting to hang out with him, so beating up greasers alongside him makes them feel like they’ve been initiated into an exclusive club.

It’s all the more gaslighting for the greasers because nobody sees the Bob who they see. And if they do, that’s the exception not the rule. And they can make exceptions for Bob Sheldon, because he’s just so special and everyone loves him.
