When my grandma was in school (in the 60s). She would sell pictures of her brother to girls at school because so many of them had a crush on him. I can see Ponyboy doing that with pictures of Darry and Soda-Pop.

Soda genuinely loves being the middle child. He wouldn’t change it for the world. And with that, while he’s both of his brothers’ favorite, he couldn’t choose between them in a million years.

He loves getting to be an older brother to Ponyboy. He takes pride in the fact that he’s the first person Pony wants to comfort him, maybe even a little smug about it. He likes that Pony trusts him with things he would be shy about telling anyone else, asking him questions he wouldn’t ask Darry or any of the other guys. Ponyboy is his baby. He picks him up and swings him around like a rag doll, messes up his hair, tickles him awake in the morning. Soda loves being an older brother.

But Soda likes being a little brother too. He’s grateful every single day that he wasn’t the oldest. He couldn’t hold it down the way Darry does. He loves how Darry calls him little buddy and how he’s the only one who can usually make Darry laugh or is allowed to mess with him. He likes being able to go to Darry for stuff since he’s lived through his teenage years before too and usually has some good advice. He likes how he’s allowed to be the cry baby of the family, how he can be reckless and get into trouble every now and then because the stakes aren’t as high.

Soda loves his brothers. He loves the secrets and inside jokes he has with each of them. The trust they both put in him. Soda is very secure in his role in the family. He wouldn’t change a thing

Cherry absolutely has a dysfunctional home life.

Reasons why I think this:

- she straight refuses to be near Bob when he’s drunk.

- she immediately sees through Johnny’s outside demeanor and clocks him as someone that isn’t dangerous without him saying much more than “hello”, despite him being a greaser.

-She looks pony dead in the eyes and says “things are rough all over” like she’s trying to say something without saying it.

-She can’t stand fights to the point of willingly getting in the car with a drunk driver to stop one from happening. (She was fed up with violence even BEFORE Bob was killed)

Honestly justice for my girl Cherry, she’s got so much going on behind the scenes.

I know Darry has that line where he refers to both Sodapop and Ponyboy as his kid brothers, but also I’m cracking up at the thought of Darry’s coworkers meeting Soda for the first time and Darry’s like “yeah so this is my kid brother, not to be confused with our baby brother,” and these men in their 30’s-40’s are like huh is there a difference? Then they actually meet Ponyboy later on and they’re like Oh! yeah that’s a baby brother if ever there was one.

i'll be real i get tired of the "darry is the gang dad" thing. like yes the gang all look out for each other but... darry's not even a father figure to sodapop who he's legally the guardian of. and as much as it pains me to admit as a person who loves mixed up family dynamics, by the end of the story the three brothers like... they give up the parents-and-son roles and go back to all being brothers and equals. sure theres a level of like darry is the legal authority but theyre all. equal to each other. it feels like a disservice to that character development to be like actually darry parents the whole gang. they are all his children. he makes their lunches and spanks them if they stay out late. you know what i mean?
