Magic: the Gathering - Choices
… . OR perhaps going full Bant on Modern Merfolk ?
Playing Magic for Less
Today I’d like to discuss how to play MtG for less money for the rest of 2017. I’ve discussed this in the past but today is a great time to bring the topic back up as we’re at a
Today is the release of Iconic Masters which has a lot of reprints that people have been waiting for including Grove of the Burnwillows, Horizon Canopy and Flusterstorm to name a few.
Prices on these cards are falling quickly with Flustersorm, once an $80 card, possibly reaching as low as $25. I’m sure Iconic Masters will be fun to draft but if you’re looking for singles, I would pick those up instead. Is it as fun? No, but you can complete your decks for future fun. Remember, think of Masters sets as sales on the cards you need to pick up. This largest reductions last for about 45-60 days depending on how spread out the value is for the set so plan accordingly. Prices usually rise back to previous levels eventually so get those deals while you can!
What else is going on? Well, it’s the holiday season which is characterized by sales. C-c-combo! We often think of sales as coming from retailers - and there are plenty of those - but there are plenty of robust groups on Facebook for buying, selling and trading. People need money for the holidays so one of the first things they do is sell excess magic cards. This means you can pick them up for 10-20% off TCG Low! If Flusterstorm hits $25, that means you can get it for $20! If you do venture into Facebook groups, make sure you ask for references. If you’ve got any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask.
eBay is another way to get great deals right now. There are frequently $15 off of $75+ coupons or flash sales. Want to get your friends together for a CNS2 draft? You can end up getting the box for $65 with a coupon!
I hope this advice helps you finish off that deck you’ve been working on or just powers up your brew!
Quick update: Iconic Masters draft packs are at Walmart and other big box stores. This means prices are plummeting faster than anticipated.
Flusterstorm is already at $20 and could hit $15
Magus of the Moon is at $7 which means $5 is a real possibility. Getting Blood Moon 5-8 for the cost of a single blood moon seems real good to me!
I like this post as a player, but as a store employee and someone who does a lot to help my LGS (I’m talking to someone about store stuff most hours of the day, everyday).
Wal-Mart having access to what used to be a WPN-exclusive product is making it so the product my store bought is now selling for less then what we paid for it, and if we throw out boxes online, they won’t sell unless we sell them at a loss.
Now, as thinking if this from a player standpoint, I’m actually kind of excited I can pick up a lot of stuff I need for modern, with new art, for super cheap.
But still, WoTC has been absolutely shutting on card stores the last 18 months or so. With the whole Planechase Anthology thing, and the second Eternal Masters printrun that was unannounced, and a bunch of other things, it is really hard for stores to want to invest in product. The lottery cards in pack didn’t help either.
That’s fair. I don’t think anyone expected this product to hit big box stores. The fact that is has means that supply is likely way higher than initially thought which is why these prices are dropping so fast.
I don't understand how Cheatyface and the new chair are supposed to work. Is only way to cheat them into play is to put them on the table from your hand right in front of your opponent's eyes, with no trickery, and hope he doesn't see it right away? I can't imagine a scenario in which my opponent wouldn't notice a new permanent appearing on the battlefield. Am I missing something?
It’s called being sneaky. Trust me, there are a lot of ways to do it.
I heard a story from one of my old commander play groups. A few turns into a commander game this guy just states that he’s swinging for lethal with nothing on his board and in the same breath throws his playmat off the table to reveal 20+ cheatyfaces he had his underneath his playmat while no one was looking
you can only cheat cheatyface into play from your hand though, and you cant play more than 1 in EDH
That’s not how cheatyface works.
Did you see the flying hippos in the adorable hydradoodle? (you can see a good image in the source of that card)
WHAT??????
OH MY GOD!
OH GOD IT’S HAPPENING!!
PLEASE @wizardsmagic CONFIRM THAT THIS IS TRUE!!! PHELDDAGRIF IS COMING BACK <3<3<3<3<3 LET IT BE A PLANESWALKER!!!! <3<3<3
If I control Rules Lawyer and my opponent controls Baron Von Count and tries to destroy me, the would Rules Lawyer prevent my destruction (loss of game)?
Destruction effects aren’t stopped by the lack of state based actions.
So that’s why that’s worded that way.

Ulamoge.
Thanks! I hate it.
I just had to.
From Matt Tabak on reddit : "Mark is incorrect here. Contraptions are not legal in Legacy, or any other format that doesn’t include Un- sets. They don’t have Magic card backs, and they aren’t DFCs. I will try to get him to clarify."
Matt is correct. Anything without a Magic back or a double-faced card is not, in the current rules, legal in Legacy.
If Contraptions are a giant hit and years from now we cards that assemble them in black border, as the Contraptions don’t have a silver border, we have the option of making them Legacy legal.
But right now - they are not Legacy legal. Note that the point is moot as there’s no way to get a Contraption onto the battlefield without assembling it from the Contraption deck.
“from the contraption deck” THE PLOT THICKENS
Has energy been deemed to powerful for standard yet? It's parasitic nature and pushed (generators and sinks) seem to outshine most what newer sets have to offer
With few rare exceptions, power level is not inherently tied to mechanics. Anything can be raised or lowered in power with costing.
This feels like a non-answer to me @markrosewater...
MaRo: “Starting soon, we are taking away the Planeswalker redirection rule and will instead tell you on the card specifically whether the card can target planeswalkers”
Me: Not soon enough
Now for the MASS Errata.
concept: calling the 4 color combos (except not-black) “goth (wedge name)”

you are absolutely right
Does the vanilla mythic TASTE like vanilla?
No.
And as I always have to remind everyone - don’t eat the delicious cards!
@bace-jeleren
How are we supposed to stop ourselves IF YOU KEEP ON CALLING THEM DELICIOUS, MARO!?!?!?
“We’ve all heard the stories…”
At least so far, it seems like WotC has found a way to include conquistadors in the game without being super insensitive about the horrible things that the real conquistadors did. Do you think this helps the chances of a wild west set, since "cowboys vs indians" as an idea is pretty inherent to the idea of a wild west setting and has all the same baggage as conquistadors vs meso-americans?
It would really depend on how they approached it. A Wild West set has a lot of inherent baggage. The history of the Conquistadors is awful, but it’s different in that there’s a vast difference in cultural sensitivity to it. It’s a part of Central American history, but it was 300 to 400 years ago instead of something that happened in the last 150 or so years. The legacy of 19th Century US policies regarding American Indians is still very much a sore issue in the US, and while I can’t comment on Central American sentiments toward the Conquistadors, the few people I do know from those regions are largely indifferent to it at this point.
This is largely why Kaladesh tried to avoid colonial themes but Ixalan did not. India’s independence was only 70 years ago. My wife’s grandfather served in the British Military in World War II. There are a TON of people for whom British Colonization was a reality in their lifetimes.
