yknow, as counterintuitive as it may seem, helping a suicidal friend isn't a matter of stopping them from dying. it's about helping to make their world one that's worth living in.

it's important to make that distinction, lest we make people's quality of life worse in the name of "protecting" them.

A lot of people, even (especially?) professionals, see suicide as an action. To them, stopping suicide is as simple as stopping the action. Nothing else matters. They just say "don't kill yourself" and demand obedience. If they stop a single action of suicide while making the suicidal person's quality of life worse, they strut around like heroes.

Now imagine if suicidal people didn't shoot themselves, stab themselves, hang themselves, drown themselves, electrocute themselves, poison themselves, or jump to their deaths. Imagine if they just died, the same way they'd die from a disease. That's how suicidal people should be treated.
