FIS alpine world cup races this weekend: friday, saturday and sunday speed races in soldeu andorra for the women, saturday and sunday speed races for the men in garmisch-partenkirchen germany. the vibes are gonna be wildly different because from what i‘ve been hearing the snow is perfection in andorra rn and garmisch is gonna be a warm-ass shit show probably (as is not uncommon because it‘s low altitude) with temps as high as 12C in the finish… 😅

on the edge: ski racing doc on disney+ at the moment, very current! i haven‘t gotten around to it yet but i hear it‘s good :)

streif - one hell of a ride: documentary about the legendary kitzbühel downhill race on redbulltv (and i think maybe netflix? or prime? it used to be somewhere anyways…)

bending gates: never getting tired of recommending this docu series on redbulltv because it‘s a glimpse into my favourite ski team everrrrr: 2021/22 era swiss men‘s GS/SG team (god i miss the days)

alpine pulse: FIS podcast, every episode interviews a different ski racer. i‘m personally not very fond of the interview style but it‘s still a nice resource!

what‘s the point: mikaela shiffrin‘s podcast, often but not always features guests from the ski racing world too.

pinheiro: youtube series on the atomic channel about lucas pinheiro braathen - truly fascinating stuff

moving right along: youtube series from mikaela shiffrin about mikaela shiffrin (absolute perfection, if you‘re into f1 think like… landolog/charles‘ vlogs etc. but much more cohesive narrative arc)

FIS alpine youtube channel: lots of behind the scenes/interview stuff :) especially fond of this atlas video from five years ago

as for fanfic slash fictional content i will say the amazing @koenig-armon has you covered AND there‘s a rather horrifically dramatic soap opera running on swiss/german/austrian tv called school of champions about life at a ski academy (available on playsrf and the ard mediathek).

every time i see the stat that Mikaela has been on the WC since 2012, it throws me off because it both feels like she’s been around forever and like that’s too long ago because what is time.

she has been such role model as both a skier AND a person to so many young ski racers, not just in the US but truly around the world. when i was growing up, yes we had Lindsey and Julia and i idolised them as well, but with Mikaela came something that they didn’t have. not only the fact that she was a tech racer (we didn’t have strong female tech skiers in the US atm lol), but just this energy, spirit, mindset and overall positivity that she brought into ski racing.

i am truly sobbing for her and with her because yes, she has a whole host of insane accomplishments already, but you can tell she needed and wanted this medal. 🤍

but i like this course, nothing particularly weird, a little swingier and a little slower but just good standard slalom

^ because this course is so 'standard' it's all about clean skiing and really driving forward and generating speed off that ski

oooh Paula that was such a beautiful second run, just so much movement and energy sent into the ski. this woman made up 20 goddamn places, and WON the second run by over half a second over miki. i'll see you in 2030 in the alps for your gold Paula

THIS IS EVERYTHING THIS WOMAN DESERVES. i am going to cry in the club (the cafe i am working in). i remember being a little teenage racer and watching this woman and how much she influenced my (short-lived) career and jesus christ idek. i have no words. she won this race by 1.50 second that is insane

okay well. my heart rate was in the 180s for those last like 10 racers but wow. and what a gorgeous podium honestly.
