I was suffering from major mahabharat withdrawals so I have been aggressively going through your blog to relive all those moments. I still think it was one of the best shows on starplus despite all the distortions. the sets, costumes, cinematography and performances were all to die for. so needless to say that I am beyond angry with star plus for obliterating everything from youtube and dailymotion, Event the promos! that was an asshole move on their part
I too suffer from withdrawals my friend. Please be careful going through posts aggressively…it’s just as much fun going in slow. In fact since we’re a little totally dead at the moment slow right now, it’s probably best to not scroll by us too quickly ;)

what i absolutely adore about ancient indian scriptures like the mahabharata is how dark, ‘dusky’ skin is portrayed as infinitely beautiful. look at krishna. at satyavati. at draupadi. at arjun. it feels so amazing to read these in a world where the standard of beauty is white skin. reading these writings almost makes me feel exhilarated, like a child carrying out a rebellious act.
Draupadi is the princess of Panchaal. Hence she is called Paanchaali. Is the same true for Gandhari? Is she called Gandhaari because she is the princess of Gandhaar? Does she have any other name recorded in the Mahabharat?
You’re A1 correct about Panchaali. She’s also called Draupadi and Yajnaseni because her father is called Drupada/Yajnasena. Likewise, Gandhari is named after her kingdom, and also sometimes referred to as Saubaleyi and Saubali, after her father Subala. Many princesses of that time were named after their kingdoms (let’s not forget Kunti and Madri) or their fathers (e.g Chitrangadha, Jambavanti) I’m guessing it was a strong reminder to both parties of their marital alliance. Kind of difficult to forget you’re allied with Gandhara when you’re calling for Gandhari 50 times a day!
Sita is another princess who is also named after her kingdom (Maithili, Vaidehi) and her father (Janaki). The Mahabharat also has men named after their mothers (this has nothing to do with your ask. I just want to continue providing random information haha) Parth, Radheya, Saubhadra, Kaunteya etc.

The 4th gif is of Mandira Bedi as Draupadi, from Sanjay Khan’s version of Mahabharat. I’m pretty sure it aired around 2000/2001. She actually did a pretty decent job (and looked so pretty!)
I was watching the battle between Duryodhan & Bhim & my weird mind came up with the most weird question. Isn't fighting in a dhoti awkward? Wouldn't a warrior be suitably dressed when on the battlefield? Like we have found the armours of our old Kings do any books mention the armours of these mighty warriors? Is it just a creative liberty taken by the makers or were armours invented much later? Any text describing the armour of a Mahabharat/ Ramayan character?
You and I would probably find it very awkward to duel in dhotis (unless you’re an everyday dhoti wearer…in which case I take it back), but let us remember that Bhima and Duryodhan would have been wearing and training in dhotis around school age, so for them I doubt it was a big deal. And let’s not forget that mace duels had strict rules about not hitting your opponent below the waist-line *cough Bhima cough* so they wouldn’t have bothered wearing armour on their legs. It would probably have slowed them down.
There are very many mentions of armour in the Mahabharat. An obvious recollection is the ‘kavach’ that Karna was born with. Another would be the time when Duryodhan taunted Drona for not doing his utmost in helping him win the war. To mollify Duryodhan, Drona gave him a special coat of mail and sent him off to confront Arjun and Krishna while they were battling to reach Jayadrath by sundown. Most warriors were described as wearing a ‘mukut’/crown and ‘kavach’/chest plate/coat of mail.

While going through some of your messages I found a few references to the CE of Mahabharat. Hence I decided to read the BORI Mahabharat. I went to their site, but the text which opens there is impossible to read. The format is strange. Can you direct me to some copy with normal text in regular English? Any link from where I can download or read online please. Also, how do you keep track of such a huge epic when you are reading it?
Here's the closest match to the CE that's also very readable... After reading Sita's sister by Kavita Kane I have become a huge fan of urmila-laxman. Can you make some gifs, siggies on this pair using the actors from the ndtv ramayan please?! Do read the book if you haven't. Its a great mix of canon & noncanon stuff & laxman - urmila r juz gorgeous in it.
Read it... Not a fan of the author or the deviations, but in general we love those characters so will definitely make something on them from some show/movie :)
