An Ask (of Sorts?)
Hmm, being courageous in a rather passive way, but... lately I've been itching to ask so many folks what led them to their NPC WoLship(s) of choice. So in the interest of efficiency and not at all because I'm too cowardly to drop this in most of your boxes without prompting, this is... I suppose a blanket ask for anyone who reads it?
Please kindly tell me the reasoning behind your chosen WoLship(s)? However much you're comfortable sharing would be great! No amount of detail is too little... but the more the better! (Please ramble—I'm actually begging.) As open format as you like, but here are some specific questions I always wonder about to serve as something of a starting point, if needed?
Why did that specific NPC (or group of NPCs) make your shipping brain go "bing" like a microwave?
Did it have anything to do with player preference?
Did your WoL (or non-WoL OC) grab you by the face and say, "Regrettably, they're the one(s)."
Was the decision immediate, or did you have to come around to the idea?
Did it feel like work to maneuver your personal canon so they fit together, or did it just evolve naturally?
Are they your sole ride-or-die OTP, or are there AUs/alternate storylines where your WoL falls in with someone else? If so, what made you curious to explore those other ships?
Alternately, for anyone who's chosen not to ship their WoL/OC with NPCs, why is that the case? Is it likewise player preference, or did your character hold up a giant sign with, "Absolutely not, thanks," scribbled on it when you tried?
If your WoLship is with another OC, what made them a better fit than any of the NPCs? Could your WoL have connected with an NPC if not for that OC's presence in their life?
I'm curious about platonic ships, too! (Those are often my favorites!) Whatever you consider the most pivotal or poignant connection(s) forged between NPC and WoL, be it friendship, familial, mentorship, rivalry, and/or so forth! What made that connection stand out so much that it's essential for your WoL's lore?
Oh, and um, please answer (if you so choose) however you prefer: new post with tag, comment, hashtags, reblog, ask (anonymous or not), separate post with zero connection to this one because you'd rather keep it to yourself, etc. etc! Truthfully... I might panic and fail to engage regardless. But I promise I will devour the information like a little Kirby (the pink one, although I suppose the vacuum works here, too) and leave not the slightest crumb, because hearing everyone's personal lore gives me giant anime sparkle eyes, like /wow!

i have put my wol with six! count em! six! failed relationships bc i think the tragedy of each helps to shine a light on something that mahni really wants but doesn't think she can have; altogether it comes to a place of She Will Always Feel Misunderstood, And Anyone Who DOES Understand Her Is Fated To Give Their Lives For Her
first is haurchefant. waves hands. that was her first real love, and her first real heartbreak. i dont think further explanation is necessary lmao... the next was aymeric briefly as a rebound from the previous, but it started to unravel as a combination of "oh we feel very guilty about this"/"we are being dragged away on our respective duties"/"uh oh, aymeric dropped the I Would Love To Go On An Adventure With You line so now i feel like i just represent the Concept of Freedom to you"
next was a weird situation with zenos, bc her own inherent love of violence and the failures she'd endured (or pyrrhic victories) were all evidence towards them being more similar than different. but the hopecore won out. and the later stuff lends to a "if i had known you sooner maybe i could have helped you because i do understand- but unfortunately for everyone, you are too far gone" <-- lends to the sense of understanding bc she doesn't think he properly understands HER
exarch and ardbert are next. both of them being people that believe in her and give their lives for her and have been waiting so, so long for her... ardbert is her soulmate in my mind (is that weird. lol. #selfship) as someone who CAN understand the pressure, who DOES love the world around him as much as she loves hers, and DECIDED to become the protector of all of it once it seemed to be his duty.
the exarch.... is an interesting case. bc she only loves the exarch. NOT what he returned to. and looking at him every day makes her feel as though the person she had loved has Died. there's a conversation in dawntrail that is PAINNNNFUL for this between the two of them and it's delicious (NO SPOILERS FOR U!). post-shadowbringers he does a lot of the "take me on ur adventures!!" stuff that put her off with aymeric. she's just a path to glory or freedom or excitement, and not really her own person
the final is venat. i have an azem/venat ship and it filters down into mahni. and AGAIN. someone who understands her is fated to give their life For Her. and it has always been meant to be that way, from the MOMENT hydaelyn was created. pain
the only things that AREN'T painful are the platonic ships tbh; her best friends are urianger and alisaie, she considers estinien a brother bc they're blood dragoons, she likes the no-nonsense weirdos. she's deeply nervous around scholars so estinien soothes her, alisaie's attempts to get stronger to support her make her feel comforted to Be Herself, and urianger's openness with her despite being quite closed off and anxious with others immediately endeared her to him. that's The Squad, plus lyse when she has the time bc they're besties too she's just extremely busy (again- another fight-centric scion that feels like she's on the same wavelength)
i do not ever go in speciiiifically looking for characters to ship with??? but i loooooove shipping and character dynamic shit so i just kind of always expect something to happen, and as i fully develop mahni thru all the msq twists and turns it kind of becomes entirely impossible for me to NOT consider how that personality would feel about everyone. i'm currently working on a google doc that's got her opinions on every major character in every expansion I LOVE THIS SHIT
i will do aus where some of those romantic ships work out tho!! or even wolships with my friends. i have two of those- one where she's dragged back in time to be a wol mentor for a xaela guy who needs to gain the confidence in himself to step up to the task, and one where she's dreamwalking into another wol's mind while they experience the story in tandem. currently, im in a large rp writing group where i brought my wol and one of my best friends brought ardbert and we're giving them a nice happy ending. it's awesome. i already have my canon ffxiv msq story plotted out, why not play around in a bajillion other sandboxes!!

I don't think Estinien ever worries about the WoL, not because he doesn't care, but because anything you do he just assumes you'll succeed, even if it shouldn't be possible. You brought Ishgard and dragons together, you and Alphinaud saved him from Nidhogg's eyes, and then you immediately freed two more countries, of course you're going to save this other world and bring the scions' souls home. He doesn't really understand it, but it sounds like you have it covered. The world is ending? Man it's a good thing we got you on our side. Fought a god of despair at the edge of the world? That's a Tuesday for you, right? The WoL is seemingly dying on the spaceship floor? Nah, watch this, they're gonna perk up in about ten minutes and give us each a high five. (Alisaie smacks him for saying this, but he's absolutely still right.)
Estinien may not be the smartest of the scions, but he is wise, and he may not fully understand what plot armor is, but he's definitely clocked that you got it.

The science behind THC + alcohol as a combination is literally soo interesting because it basically causes the crimson red duckling in your body to confront the serpent in the bronze vessel of your heart. Basically you feel good because the duckling is able to eat the harmonious seeds stored within the vessel and transfer these positive energies into your body. You can have bad highs when this happens if the duckling awakens the serpent and it bites the duckling. The interesting part is when you ingest alcohol after THC because it floods the vessel and causes the serpent to fall into a deep sleep. The duckling never gets attacked by the serpent when this happens because it is unconscious and the duckling is actually able to get fat from the harmonious seed, which causes an enjoyable sensation.
