Here I share my various projects related to Osamu Sato's works. I also post download links and Macromedia Director tutorials. (I follow from @pixelscapes)
In the past few months, I’ve been working with the folks over at Flashpoint to preserve web games. One of the questions I hear most often…
Here’s a quick article I wrote about the difference between Flash and Shockwave. I’m also writing a longer article on the Director file format, it should be out soon!
Over the next few weeks, I’m going to be posting deep dives into Macromedia/Adobe Director, and some analyses of interesting bits of code in Osamu Sato’s games. Stay tuned! For now, here is my first post:

Here’s a little preview of Chu-Teng - in English - running on Windows 10. This will mean emulators/virtual machines won’t be necessary. It’s not 100% yet, but it’s getting there!
All thanks go to @mai-chiu who has been working on converting the game to run natively on modern operating systems. (And for pretty much everything else related to text insertion, etc.!)
As you may know, Adobe has discontinued Adobe Director, leaving users with no way to buy the product. Thankfully, there is an easy way to extend your 30-day trial indefinitely. Instructions are below.
1. Run Notepad (or your favorite text editor) as an administrator.
2. Press Ctrl-O to bring up the Open dialog, and paste the following into the File name box: C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Director 12\AMT\application.xml
Then press Enter to open the file.
3. Find the TrialSerialNumber near the end of the file.
4. Change any part of the number. For example, I changed the 0 at the end to a 1. Save the file.
5. Open Director, and it should prompt you to sign in again. Sign in and enjoy Director for 30 more days!
hey remember when I was trying to find a copy of Eastern Mind? Well turns out some Youtubers have given it attention since so there might be a link out there now
I have turned the scene from the Room of Immortality into a screensaver! It is tested and working in Windows 10 and below. Download here: https://mega.nz/#!x7gE2DQC!zvjLOxV-F_kI384zfFmZwfy9fjV-QFE3Uik7k1p-690
By the way, I used the free DirSaver program to make this.

Does anybody have screenshots or a download link of the entire Tong-Nou illustrated book alone? I’m very curious to read the bios of some of the characters without setting up a VM and getting to the marketplace.
The last 5 pages are blank because they’re unlocked as you progress in the game. Check out the links on my blog, getting the game set up is really quite simple!
How to rip the music and graphics from Eastern Mind
This tutorial actually works for all Macromedia Director games, not just Eastern Mind!
To set up Director, download the installer from here: http://download.macromedia.com/pub/director/updates/mx2004/win/dmx2004_101_update_en.exe
In newer versions of Windows, you may need to run both the installer and the program itself in Compatibility Mode for Windows XP. When you're prompted for a license key, type the following: DRD100-50836-87264-59396
In order to export, download these Xtras:
Sharp Export http://web.archive.org/web/20070214181137/http://www.sharp-software.com:80/xtras/SharpExport.zip
Audio Xtra - http://xtras.tabuleiro.com/download/audio.htm
Extract them and place the .x32 files in this directory: C:\Program Files (x86)\Macromedia\Director MX 2004\Configuration\Xtras\Scripting.
Now open Director and create a new movie (Ctrl+N). Press CTRL + Shift + U to create a new script. Link each game file to your movie (CTRL + Shift + C; Link...). Each file needs to have a ".dir" extension; don't use a game version with protected ".dxr" files. Be sure to select "all files" from the "files of type" dropdown, or your files will not appear. If any dialogs (such as "locate replacement") show up just dismiss them.
(Note: If you really need to export from protected files, download DirOpener from here - http://web.archive.org/web/20150512145925/http://www.j-roen.net/diropener/dirOpener300-702-1-PC.zip
You can use DirOpener to convert the dxr files.)
Once all the files are linked, go back to your script window and paste in the code from here: https://pastebin.com/QWvHzzfd
Next, find the folder on your computer that you want to put your new files in. Copy the path to that folder. In Director, find "your_path_here" in the script and replace it with the path you just copied. Make sure you don't delete the quotes! Press Shift-F8 to save your changes.
Press Ctrl-M to bring up Director's message window. To export all of the game's pictures, type "exportImages" (without the quotes) and hit enter. To export all the sounds, type "exportAudio" (without the quotes) and hit enter. The files should appear in the folder on your computer that you defined.
