So I binged the hell out of Supernatural and caught up after years.  I hope Mary takes the next season to reflect on her failures as a mom since coming back home. Maybe finally figure out that her kids had a shit childhood, and like being there for them instead of them constantly having to come rescue her ass.

I love that Lena of all people is going to be starring in an Akshay Kumar film (hopefully not as his mother or older sister; come on, Malayalam cinema, do better!). 

She is our swakarya ahankaram (our secret pride) and deserves better roles than as mother to 33 year old men, however strong that character is. 

There are plenty of 50+ actresses in Malayalam cinema who could have played Prithviraj’s mother in Ennu Ninte Moideen with the right amount of rebelliousness and anger. It’s our industry’s inability to imagine those actresses as anything beyond tears and cotton sarees that’s the problem.

Then the roles Lena should be playing goes to someone like Meghana Raj or Bhama. The age distortion is so strong that I just laugh helplessly at the ridiculousness of irl men who say things like Manju Warrier looks like Kunchacko Boban’s older sister or Shobana looks older than Mohanlal. 

LIKE WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK. DO THEY REALIZE ACTRESSES ARE WOMEN AND WOMEN ARE PEOPLE AND PEOPLE AGE OVER A LIFETIME AND THAT DOESN’T MEAN THEY HAVE TO GO INTO HIDING AND DIE.

I’m glad Rima is talking more about this; by the time an actress learns her craft (probably 5-6 years into her career), she gets aged out of mainstream lead roles and into mother and sister roles.  I felt so uncomfortable watching Praveena play Nazriya’s mother in Bangalore Days. How old was she when she had her? 15?  Filmmakers (yes, even our favs) should be embarrassed by their lack of imagination.

How is an actress ever going to be as good as Mammootty or Mohanlal who have been honing their craft for 30-40 years when she’s not even allowed 5 years? Chackochan was considered a poor actor when he debuted at 18 and now he’s considered a solid performer. No one gives actresses who debut at 18 that kind of time to get good.

Back to Lena, I feel like she’s really fighting the good fight in terms of staying relevant and doing the best with the roles she gets: Ee Adutha Kalathu, Alif, Left Right Left, Kanyaka Talkies, etc. 

I’ve been a fan since she used to host Your Choice on Asianet and was the forgettable love interest’s memorable friend in Devadoothan. And I hope she gets all the Bollywood monies for this film and more Malayalam filmmakers offer her central roles than aren’t defined by whose mother or sister or wife they are.
