survey wrap-up
hi yâall! hereâs the promised summary of that study i was collecting data for a month or two ago- (again, huge thank you to @tavaresfucker for helping distribute it and to everyone who took it!) if you want to read the full study you can find that here. if you donât want to read 40+ pages, hereâs the highlights:
research goal: documenting the existence of what we call âmulti-team fansâ (aka fans who follow multiple teams within the same league). we wanted to do this by comparing them to more traditional âsingle-team fansâ in terms of consumption, age, and gender. we also wanted to see how level of loyalty changes or remains the same between teams for multi-team fans.
methods: we used the sports spectator identification scale, which has a cronbachâs alpha of .915 and has been relatively widely used in the field. we also had a variety of questions about how people consumed sports media and products over the past 24 months, plus demographics questions.
results:
multi-team fans (m = 6.06) have a significantly higher level of loyalty to their âteam Aâ as compared to single-team fans (m = 5.27), t (148) = -3.12, p < .001.
for consumption, the only statistically significant finding was that single-team (m = 4.64) fans bough more miscellaneous merchandise than multi-team fans (m = 1.53), t (148) = 1.14, p < .05. there were no significant differences in number of games streamed or attended, of jerseys purchased, of branded clothing items purchased, or of number of season ticket holders.
there were no significant differences in gender. 88.5% of single-team fans were female, 6.5% were male, 3.3% were nonbinary, and 1.6% self-reported another identity. multi-team fans were 76.4% female, 6.7% male, 12.2% nonbinary, and 4.5% reported another identity, X2 (N = 150, df = 4) = 6.64, p < .16.
there were no significant differences in age. 90.1% of single-team fans were 18 - 34. 87.7% of multi-team fans were 18 - 34, X2 (N = 150, df = 5) = 5.44, p < .36.
for multi-team fans, level of loyalty to team A (m = 6.86, sd = .82) is statistically significantly higher than teams B - E. loyalty to teams B (m = 4.99, sd = 1.8) and C (m = 4.34, sd = 1.5)are not significantly different from each other, but are from teams A, D, and E. similarly, teams D (m = 3.56, sd = 1.61) and E (m = 3.26, sd = 1.46) are not significantly different from each other, but are from teams A, B, and C, wilksâ đ = .11, F (4, 10) = 20, p < .001.
limitations:
we may have just measured how millennial/gen z women consume sports
covid may have impacted consumption
people may not accurately recall their consumption
imperfect survey
overall: this was such a cool project to get to do, and iâm really grateful for everyone who participated! the fact that we found any statistically significant findings was so exciting and iâd love to refine and redo this to try to get it published. i read tens (if not hundreds) of studies for this project and didnât find anything quite like it, so it was so, so cool to get to do such a unique project. i hope the concept of multi-team fans gets further explored in the near future (check out the future research section for some of my favorite ideas lol) because i really think it can add more breadth and depth to our understanding of sports fans and fandom
the people counting down the days until prospects turn 18 so they can "ethically" ship them are just as weird as the men who count down the days until female celebs turn 18. literally jail lmao
if youre mad about this ⌠what went wrong in your life that you want to talk about real teenagers (kids) having pretend sex SO bad? and if youâre saying that shit where they can see it ??? again, literally jail
yall arent gonna like this one but if youre in the hrpf community/fandom you actually do have an obligation to lock your fics and your social media accounts. you do have an obligation to star out/censor names, and you do have an obligation to build up a rock solid fourth wall. you are not on an island alone by yourself. there are other people in this community with you, we are doing something that involves real fucking people, and you have an obligation to respect your community, the norms and guidelines that have always existed in this fandom, and the real people we write about.
idk about u but iâm feeling 22
not to be emo on main but my dad died a year ago (not entirely sure of the exact date. but a year ago yesterday was when we saw him in the icu). a little while after, i was trying to find a reference photo of some stuff from the 2002 bc he was a torch bearer and thatâs my first memory and i was thinking of getting a tattoo. i went to the wikipedia page and found this:
iâd never seen this photo before. neither had anyone else in my family. it just felt... really special and still does. sports were always something we connected over and just- idk. i miss my dad.
on the one hand i make a conscious choice not to joke about my father, his death, etc
on the other hand it was a little funny to realize 1 it is fatherâs day and 2 this is my to-do list rn
if the predators win this series ... right around when the anniversary of when my ex sent me back to therapy ? i will simply die.
look not to stick up for a 23-year-old white millionaire but if you think the failures of the Oilers can be placed solely on âMcDavid isnât a good enough leaderâ when the coach didnât trust half the roster to even be played more than a handful of minutes last night, I just think youâre being a bit silly.
a successful hockey team is not six people. a successful hockey team is not two people and a goalie. a successful hockey team that goes somewhere in the playoffs has DEPTH and has a whole roster the coach trusts to get the job done.
the idea that a certain amount of âLeadership XPâ points held by one person could have somehow overcome things like the fact that Darnell Nurse had to play over an HOUR of ice time last night while some other dmen only played 10 min (nevermind the two previous OTâs) really just stacks up to dumb macho âpush through it/play harderâ philosophy in my eyes. you can have all the âforce of willâ and âdesire to winâ you want. I watched Vegas have both of those and lose the presidentâs trophy in one game this year because they simply could not dress enough skaters to keep up with Colorado for cap reasons, and got worn out as the game went on (maybe Colorado still would have won the game if Vegas had a full roster, but that discrepancy made certain of it).
hockey is a team sport and you need a properly constructed team, with depth and flexibility, who are trusted by your coach, to do it and to win. the perpetual failure of the Oilers is a management problem
no seriously look at this
Jets defence time on ice from last nightâs 3OT game:
Oilers defence TOI:
That is a problem!! Your last three games went to OT, this one went to triple OT, and youâre trying to play that long loooong chess match of endurance and defence with essentially one less D-pair than the other team because you wonât play guys? (And I havenât even compared the forwards!) NO amount of being âa team playerâ or âwanting to winâ was going to get you a win out of that unless the other team just laid down and died (the Jets, obviously, had no intent in doing so).
Look I donât even CARE about Connor McDavid that much but saying âwell clearly the guy who just got 105 points (72 of them assists, by the way) in 56 games, and other guy whoâs the winner of last yearâs Hart and Art Ross trophies, are not pulling their weight around here. thatâs obviously the main problemâ is just silly!! That is not what the problem is! The problem is that while having a handful of high-talent players might win you well in the regular season, the playoffs. need. depth. The Oilers do not have that, or at the very least they do not have a coach who trusts the players theyâve got to provide that depth. Until they actually properly fix this, they will go nowhere. No matter how hard Connor McDavid tries.
