I have sympathy for people who steal NECESSITIES.

Food. Medicine. Toiletries. 

And even then- dollar tree. Dollar Tree has literally saved my life so many times. THey have almost everything. toothbrushes/toothpaste, frozen goods, canned goods, jugs of water– even some [off-brand] over the counter medicines. They even have pregnancy tests [yep!]

They have children’s toys, household cleaners…

I’m not going to say there’s “no excuse”; but as a card-carrying broke bitch let me tell you– help isn’t always easy to get, but its there. Goodwill and the salvation army have clothes. You can get 3 months of food stamps if you’re unemployed but able to work. The salvation army will let ANYONE come and eat at 6pm so long as you have an ID, no questions asked. 

But the thing that really annoys me is– you’re not even in need. 

You’re taking these luxury items just because you’re bored or think you’re being edgy and radical and you REALLY want that name-brand thing; and when you get caught– oh man here come the crocodile tears

Man I know I’m old now, because here I am lecturing kids about how not-cool it is to steal just because.

I often times am envious of people who make these kind of blanket “dont support x because of y” posts with no thought or nuance to the issue at hand because I KNOW they have never been in the situation where these services were a need and not a choice.

The salvation army is one of two shelters in my city. You either go here, or the Good Shepard, or you sleep at the park in the bathroom.

The salvation army has has given my gay ass food, my 2 of my bisexual cousins a place to live, has clothes, has a program to help you find work, will let ANYBODY come and eat NO QUESTIONS ASKED, and your primary concern is…..politics?

 Let me tell you something.

When you’re homeless you dont give a fuck about “omg salvation army is so shitty!!!” You wash in the sink at the library.. You have nowhere to go. You’re so hungry you’re sick. You’re running a fever. Your shoes have holes in them. You cant get a job because you’re not even CLEAN.

The Salvation army gives homeless people a chance where they dont have one, ESPECIALLY when its sometimes THE ONLY shelter in smaller cities and towns. If you’re able to have a choice in the matter? Fine. But millions of people dont. 

The salvation army gave:

My mother and her baby [my older sister] a place to live.

Cousin #1 a place to live.

Cousin #2 a place to live

Cousin #3 a place to live.

Cousin #4 a place to live.

And allowed anyone, even me [a homosexual!!!], who isnt even homless [yet] FREE food in a warm dry safe environment every single night at 6pm.

Maybe its just a personal choice of yours, if you rather get help from homophobic people that’s fine, I understand desperate times call for desperate measures, but this is a warning for people who rather not support them. You would not want to sleep on a dirty bathroom floor in the park, than go to the salvation army. 

You would not want to sleep in somebody’s shed in the middle of december, than go to the salvation army.

you would not want to develop medical complications from a lifestyle on the streets, than go to the salvation army.

You’re a single mom? You wanna be homeless than go to the SA? If you end up homeless– DSS will take your kids and put them in foster care. You’d let that happen? If you lost your place to live, and the ONLY PLACE you had to go was the Salvation ARmy, you’d look at your 3 kids and say “welp, see you later guys.” and let social services take them? Or worse- make them sleep outside with you? You’d REALLY do that to your children rather than woman up and do what you had to do for your family? 

You’d look at this place that would give you and your family: 

Beds.

Showers.

Clean clothes.

Shelter.

Food.

Water.

Help with finding a job.

Financial support.

and say “No thanks, I’m going to live at park.” ? 

I’m so angry, because people say these things all the time and I know 100% that its complete bull. When you’re REALLY in that situation- its not about feeling morally superior– its about survival. A month of washing your ass at the library, of wearing the same dirt  sweaty clothes you can’t even clean, of always being hungry, always being tired, not having anything as simple as a bed or a warm place to be, or any real way to escape it– you mean to tell me you would choose doing that and losing your kids to the fucking system, than sucking it up, moving into the SA until you got back on your feet? 

“I’D RATHER BE HOMELESS THAN SUPPORT THE SALVATION ARMY” is the very definition of privilege. My mother didn’t get to “Choose” to be homeless. She had a 10 year old daughter and she ran from an abusive relationship into a new city and had nowhere to go. It was either go to the SA, or lose her child. So she went to the damn SA. They helped her find work, she got a job, and they got her under Section 8 housing.

I dont give a rat’s ass who or what anybody claims they hate, because I know for a fact that for tens of millions of people every single year this organization has been the ONLY thing that’s saved them. This isn’t a video game where there’s the good choice and the bad choice. This place is one of the few resources there for anybody who needs it. So yes, turning your nose up at it and saying “I’D just be homeless.” proves you don’t have a clue what the people who NEED this place are actually facing.

However, Ihave been in foster care and lemme tell you, its a shitton better than getting help from any charity. Majority of foster parents are super experienced with kids, either by other foster kids or their own. You get weekly visits with parents and calls every night. Sure, its not being with them every night, but now my mom could afford a roof over her head, food to eat, and her children are in a free government program where she can be sure they are housed safely with someone who cares.

My mom would rather put her children she loves dearly in a warm home where someone loves them and can afford to feed them and bathe them then put them through a point in their lives where they’re only being fed by a charity, and I mean any charity. My mother absolutely despises the salvation army, she’s a very strong ally and left Christianity mainly due to homophobia. If she’s going to leave a religion why would she support a charity that does the opposite of what she views?

Because sometimes you have to put your beliefs to the side and do what you have to do to survive. That might mean working a job where you’re mistreated until something better comes along. That might mean asking for help from somebody you’d rather not involve in your situation.

That’s what being an adult means sometimes. As much as we want to believe we’re always going to be this radical person who fights ~*the power*~ every step of the way, life has a way of fucking you up sometimes. There’s going to be situations when you’re going to have to say to yourself “It doesn’t matter how I feel about it, I need to do this right now.”

and honestly, putting kids in foster care when there’s something YOU can do to keep your family together is…selfish. Your parents are your whole world. They’re all you have.  And I know some people who really resent their mom/dad for giving them up– they feel abandoned, unwanted, or like their parent[s] just weren’t willing to get their shit together because the child [them!] wasn’t worth it. 

Someone who WANTS their children and WANTS to be in their lives and stay with them is going to fight for them and do whatever they have to do to keep their children. If your mother just shrugged her shoulders and signed over custody because the thought of living at the shelter was just too much for her moral convictions- then that is not someone who wanted to be a mother. There’s nothing wrong with needing to give your kids up if you CANNOT care for them. But to give them up instead of taking your ass down to the shelter and at least TRYING to get back on your feet?

I really hope you’re joking. I really hope you wouldn’t seriously abandon your kids rather than go to the salvation army if it really came down to it. 

I dont have kids, I’m never having kids, but if I did I know I wouldn’t choose my moral smugness over my own son or daughter.

I will always support the salvation army. (and I am gay) They saved my uncle and his girlfriends life.  He now has more trophies for building motorcycles than he has room for in his garage. He has been in more magazines than I can count. And his gf owns and runs an incredibly profitable landscaping business. They are some incredible, amazing people now because what the salvation army has done for them.
