Today's wasp of the day is Sphex latreillei!
Credits: photo 1, photo 2
Often referred to as avispa gallo (rooster wasp), this flashy fluffer is endemic to Chile. Their mating behaviors can be.... aggressive. Let's just say that females don't have much interest in mating and are mostly preoccupied with hunting and constructing nests. Multiple female wasps will often use the same nesting site for multiple generations. However they don't seem to be friendly neighbors and fights over stealing prey are common. This can be risky as their prey needs to stay fresh (aka alive) and if it gets damaged, all of the wasps involved will reject it.
I know the joke is that Spandam is a "panda" but his facial markings always made me think of a raccoon. I think the raccoon matches the character more than the giant panda.
June 30, 1925 Miss Dorothy Brautigan of the short-lived National American Ballet, photographed probably at Rock Creek Park. She was only fourteen here. Dorothy moved to New York City and worked in the Ziegfeld Follies. From America in the 1920s, FB.
