Elliot Lim - Childline

A lot of animation that I see is being used to help explain new tech projects and services. The more of them I see, the less powerful they become as a method for communication, and as someone that looks at animation a lot it has lead me to question the effectiveness of the medium, and if it’s becoming a little self-absorbed. This, however, is an example of animation being used very effectively. The combination of visual transitions and sound design make a strong case for animation, and show how important it can be in folding time and space together to pack a powerful punch.

Moth - Woodland Trust

Moth (formerly Moth Collective) always produce beautiful hand-drawn pieces with just the right amount of detail. This piece for the Woodland trust shows the life of a tree planted in a back garden and is no exception. The music partners the passing of time brilliantly and the little moments in each scene are a delight to watch.

Joe Donaldson - How Far We've Come

By 2030, we could be living in a world with 0 new HIV infections. That's the premise for this simple animation by Joe Donaldson, which is an expertly executed presentaion of events, milestones and statistics from the battle against AIDS. The sound design by Studiokamp supports the piece perfectly.

This truly mind-bending piece from Buck combines a great visual style, genius transitions and an epic soundtrack to masterful effect.

This year’s TEDx claim “ Re-imagining everything ” gave me the chance to literally re-imagine the process of creating an animation as I was used to. That’s why I chose to paint each frame using watercolor. The water transformed each of the frames in a unique and different piece and as I didn’t want to have the full control on the texture ( and I’m NOT a painter! ) I’m pretty happy with the result! Thanks to Beatrice Bresolin I could create this interaction of dancing shapes and thanks to MIMICsound the whole piece became a funky jungle of colors! Jola Bańkowska - 'Biotop'

This short piece makes a brilliant point in an elegant way. I love the simplicity of thought.

Yoodowon - 'Blind'

What's not to like about an animated homage to the window blind? The soundtrack is perfect in this short piece, and the repetition is is the point my eyes glazed over in a good way. This is fresh.

Tom McCarten - 'Madam President'

This is great for a number of reasons. It talks about gender inequality in politics and does so with a deft combination of collage and data that is as informative as it is beautiful. I previously posted up a video by animator Tom McCarten and I really like his style and approach to animation. I look at a lot of vector and character-based stuff because I love it, but it's refreshing and inspiring to see people using more depth and texture in digital work.

Found - Mondegreen

I haven't ventured into the world of 3D animation yet, so I'm always in awe of the worlds that can be created. This is a brilliant example of a surreal and consuming space made up of sculptures and machines that seem to tick along forever.

The video description says:

Set in a surreal museum of mishearing, 'Mondegreen' features a series of kinetic sculptures each representing a different word that sounds like 'Found'.

Concepts like that are always nice to discover especially when they aren't immediately obvious. Not something you could get away with for every client or piece you work on, but great for this kind of self promotional show of skill.

Giant Ant - Fix Florida for Costa Sunglasses

My girlfriend is from Gainesville so I have developed a recent affinity with Florida. This beautiful story is about the growing problem of water quality in the state. I spoke to a few people over there about this and it seems like Big Sugar has had a massive impact on water inland and on the coast. Algae blooms have started appearing that are suffocating wildlife and turning beautiful aquatic environments into uninhabitable graveyards.

This video does a great job at telling that story in a way that is both linear and abstract in a way that only animation can. Perspectives are merged as the camera pans along and the lighting is really stunning.
