What if we could really see and feel the burden that air pollution places on our bodies?
"Air Transformed is a series of wearable data objects that communicate this physical burden in different ways. Though seemingly decorative, they are based entirely on open air quality data from Sheffield, UK, a former steelmaking city and notorious for its bad air. Our task was to create friendly, accessible pieces that used open air quality data to inspire public engagement with the issue of air pollution. From the start, we knew we wanted to explore creating systems for transforming data into physical forms and this was something we worked hard to achieve: though the objects are intricate, nothing is ornamental: every aspect of the design was determined by data."

Streams of wireless data surge from internet exchanges and cellphone relays, flowing from routers to our devices and back again. This saturation of data has become a ubiquitous part of modern life, yet it is completely invisible to us. What would it mean to develop an additional sense which makes us continuously attuned to the invisible data topographies that pervade the city streets?
Phantom Terrains is an experimental platform which aims to answer this question by translating the characteristics of wireless networks into sound. By streaming this signal to a pair of hearing aids, the listener is able to hear the changing landscapes of data that surround them. Network identifiers, data rates and encryption modes are translated into sonic parameters, with familiar networks becoming recognizable by their auditory representations.

Computed Copy by Nukem, So Kanno and yang02 of gokinjo-monozukuri.org
"Although there is a traditional way of designing flat patterns which considers the movement of the body and characteristics of the material, computers design it in a totally different way, because they recognize the 3D shape as a polygon which is a collective form of flat faces.
Our purpose for this “Computed Copy” is not only to make some distortion which humans cannot produce, but also to make garments which are not just “copy” and have the alternative creativity. By removing humans’ arbitrariness as much as possible from the process of copying designs, and by letting computers do it, we can create a new kind of designing system.
In the future, we think that it will be possible to copy a garment only with the image files on the internet without scanning actual things, thanks to the rapid development of 3D technology (scanning, modeling, and printing) and a flood of images on the internet. We expect that this work will be the fastest automated way of copying the designs as the final destination of fast fashion.”

Ceramic 3D Printer
Artist Jonathan Keep has put together a 3D printer to produce digital objects out of clay, and has put together a document to build one:
Based on the delta type of 3D printer my aim has been to use parts that can either be made with basic DIY tools and skills, or ordered off the internet. The design is specifically for printing in clay but could be adapted to work with other materials. Many other self build 3D printers use parts printed in plastic but with this project I did not want to be reliant on already having access to a 3D printer.

Looking at Jonathan’s website (in particular the ‘Digital Pots' section), you will see various series based on various ideas. There is the Random Growth of generative forms, Sound Surface based on musical audio data, and other computational methods.

"Living Moments" examines everyday life in NYC, frozen in revolving time. 50 Lumia 1020s were aligned along an arc and set to capture photos simultaneously. Finding real people who were then asked about their day. The first time that a bullet time rig has been made to be 100% mobile.
Behind the scenes
Taff Tales is an site specific narrative experience that spans six routes that branch off from the popular Taff Trail in Wales. Hidden stories can be uncovered by phoning the Taff Tales telephone numbers that can be found on signs along the routes. The more locations you visit, the more stories you can discover. www.tafftales.org.uk

"Hit the beat is a physical drum machine that can play everything, making it possible for everyday objects to become actual musical instruments. Anyone can build an orchestra-like set of items, thus marking the beginning of an intuitive and fully interactive investigation of music and sound. The machine is based on an Arduino platform acting as the translator of a message in midi format, which triggers a physical solenoid percussion."
