Hey, i'm Sash. I recently made a decision to go back to college to do what what I love... Make-Up. I'm currently studying VTCT Fashion & Photographic Make-Up. I'll be keeping a weekly blog of tips and tricks and the odd review. Thanks for giving it a gander.

A few weeks ago I blogged about how i clean my brushes with baby shampoo, I think this is the best way as it kills bacteria and keeps the bristles soft. So after each day i use my brushes i will clean them with baby shampoo that night so they are dry for the next day.

However if you going to do make up on a few people in the same day you need a quicker way to clean the brushes. I found a really cheap but effective brush cleaner on amazon for £5 so i had to try it.

Poor some of the solution out into a beaker, submerge the bristles for a fee seconds then wipe away excess moisture. In a few seconds the brush will be completely dry. I have done a little video to show how quick it works.

The product is really cheap, and works really well i would definitely recommend it to any free lance MUA’s

Week 6: contouring and highlighting After half term and MAC week in college i was finally back to it this Monday with contouring and highlighting. This look is more of a commercial look for example when you see adverts for skin care products or water and natural products and tooth paste when the model looks like she has no make up on. You contour with a darker colour and highlight with a lighter colour to achieve an oval face shape. There is typically a darker colour to contour and diminish under the cheek bones, along the jaw line, on the sides of the nose up into the brow bone and eye socket and also along the temples. Next you should highlight in an upside down triangle shape on the for head and down the nose, on the chin and cupids bow and a triangle under each eye. This should be blended so there are no visible lines between the colours to achieve a subtle but effective look. Next week we are studying high fashion make up. A client also asked me to do her make up for a christening tomorrow so i had a little trail to test the colours. See you next week, Sash x

Week 5: Bridal Make-up This week in college was so amazing, i was taught a whole new side of make up and a possible industry i could go into once i have qualified. We had a demo for three different possible looks for brides- country garden, vintage and cocktail evening. Country garden look usually for a bride wearing a soft romantic gown, maybe flowers in her hair, young flower girls in ivory dresses and the ceremony starts at 11 am. For this look the make up would be quite soft and natural, pinks and peaches with light subtle brows for a slightly smokey affect with a nude or pink lip. Vintage look usually for a bride with a lace dress and an audrey Hepburn style up do. The bridesmaids dresses are a 1950s style and the ceremony starts at 1pm. For this look again the make up would be quite soft with black liner with a flick and a red lip. Cocktail evening look usually for a bride diamanté encrusted fishtail gown, glamours up do and tiara, the bridesmaid in a satin pink dresses with a sweetheart neckline, the ceremony starting at 4pm. For this look i would use soft browns to create a light smokey look with a pink lip to complement the bridesmaids dresses. For my client holly above i chose the county garden look after a consultation with her about her wedding. Its so important to do a Consultation before the doing the make up as so many factors go into what look the bride is aiming to achieve. A few of the questions i would ask in a bridal trail would include -colours -theme -dress (ask to see a swatch of the material if possible) -time of year -bridesmaid dress -flowers -time of day -if the bride wears make up usually in day to day life -if they will be wearing a tan And lastly i would ask to see similar pictures of the look they want to achieve as my idea of natural could be really different from the clients. I would also do a skin teat on any clients with items such as lash glue. Overall its just so important to show the bride you are interested in their special day and make them feel amazing. Week 4: mature make up This weeks lesson was mature make up. This has been the most interesting lesson so far. There is a totally different technique to applying foundation and even applying eye shadow. This look is the same as basic evening make up from weeks 2 with small tweeks to fit a mature face, with the exception of powder, its important to stay away from powder on a mature face as you will achieve a more dewy, fresh look. Its also important to avoid anything with shimmer on the eyes as this will draw attention to baggy or looser skin. Before you apply the make up its important to tone, cleanse and moisture the clients face to put a bit of colour in the cheeks then use an illuminating cream to brighten the complexion. Im so excited for next weeks lesson bridal make up, as usual ill post pictures afterwards. And my business cards arrived today, everyone loves a bit of glitter. Sash x

Week 3 in college: smokey eye and false lash application I was so nervous for this look as I've never done a smokey eye this heavy before. I also applied the eye make up first this week rather than after i had put the foundation on. Which way do you prefer? To achieve this look i have used the products mentioned in my first blog. I first start with a fresh face by cleaning and toning the clients face and then applying a small amount of moisturiser. Then prep and prime the eyelid, i use mac prep and prime in light shade, but concealer works just as well. I use mac vanilla pigment to cover the lid all the way up to the brow bone as a base. Next use a soft kohl black pencil liner to colour in the bottom half of the eye lid. Take a small soft blending brush and blend the liner to create a smokey affect. Use a really shimmery bronze or brown colour, apply it with your finger and dab along the lid. This stick to the kohl pencil and creates a really lovely affect. Next i use a highlight along the brow bone and tear ducts to really make the eyes pop. Personally i love the peaches and cream pigment called pearl. I use black track mac gel liner to line the top lid and create a flick, also line just underneath your waterline. Use a kohl pencil to line the water line and a small soft brush to drag the colour under the eye. Wipe away any excess and conceal any blemishes, redness or rosacea. Apply foundation on face starting at the chin jaw line with a foundation brush then blend in. I love mac prep and prime translucent finishing powder over the top to take away any shine and set the face. Mac melba blush on the cheek, nose, chin and forehead over the top creates a really warm skin tone Nd highlights where you would naturally catch the sun. I used stud eyebrow pencil to fill in the gaps on the client rather than creating a new brow shape for her, and i chose a nude colour lip as not to distract from the eyes. It was really fun creating this looks and I have learnt a few little tips to pick up speed and improve my technique next time i have a go. Next week i will be having a crack at mature make up so wish me luck! Sash x

Week number three in college - basic day make up. My sister in the first picture kindly agreed to be my model. This was the first time i have done a full face of make up on another person, i do it on my self every day and its a really different experience when you're doing it on someone else. the only critique from my tutor is that i went a little too heavy with the colour of eye shadow as its just basic day make up, to be used for an interview type of situation. The good news is my mum in the second picture liked it and asked for hers to be done for her night out. I really enjoyed learning about matching and mixing make ups to match skin tone. Next weeks lesson is basic evening make up, I'm really looking forward to it. Also i have ordered my mac pro card, a mac shopping spree is calling my name, who can resist? Sash x

How to clean your make-up brushes

As i have tackled this task today, i decided my next blog should be how to clean your brushes. Here is a step by step guide to deep cleansing your make-up brushes. You will need a towel and baby shampoo.

- first take a tissue and wipe away any excess power or cream from the brush

- put a fifty pence sized bad of baby shampoo in the palm of your hang, while the warm water is running add a tiny bit to the shampoo in your hand, take the brush and run the bristles through the mixture until you see a foamy lather

- rinse the bristles under the warm running water until all shampoo is out of the brush. Don’t let the water run over the ferrule as water will get into the glue that holds in the bristles and they will become loose.

- squeeze out any excess water from the bristles and re shape

- place a towel over a counter or work top, place brush on the towel to dry leaving the bristles hanging over the edge so air can right the way throughout Last night i had my first lesson in college actually doing make up on a model so today i have done the first deep clean on my brushes and so far so good. I will be posting the before and after from yesterday soon

Hi, I’m Sash, i’m 23 and had a passion for all things make up for as long as I can remember. For a few years now my friends and family have been telling me I should pursue it as a career and I have finally taken the plunge. Im currently studying VTCT Fashion and Photographic make up Level 3 at college and when I qualify next June I will be a Mac Pro Make up artist. Im really looking forward to this little adventure and I cant wait to see where it takes me.

So I decided my first blog should be about the most exciting part of my course so far…THE KIT! I am beyond excited to use it for the first time on Monday. So here is a little run down of the Mac Pro Student Kit 2 required for my course.

Over the next year I will be studying a wide range of make up techniques from mature make up to fantasy body make up, false lash application to highlighting and contouring, as well as the 6 different skin tones, skin care and how to identify different skin disorders and diseases.
