Rain turned Hopeâs Peak into a sealed box.
It started sometime after second periodâfirst a soft insistence against the windows, then a steady drumming that swallowed the courtyard whole. By the time the announcement crackled through the intercom, the sky had darkened to a dull slate, rain streaking the glass in uneven lines like something had dragged its fingers down the building.
âDue to severe weather conditions, all outdoor activities are suspended. Students are advised to remain inside until further notice.â
Maki Harukawa barely reacted. Weather was just weather. Noise, inconvenience, something to endure.
The forest had gone quiet in the way that meant danger.
Snow hung thick on the branches overhead, bending them low, weighing the world down into stillness. Even the wind had softened, reduced to a thin breath that slid through the trees and sank its teeth into exposed skin. Aurora pulled her cloak tighter around herself, fingers numb, breath fogging white in front of her face.
She didnât say anything. She hadnât for a while.
Mulan noticed anyway.

AO3 has recently seen a rise in guest spambot comments making false accusations about work creators or other users. For example, they may claim that a particular user is discriminating against minorities, trying to hide the fact that they use AI, or are at risk of having their works stolen or deleted.
These comments often copy existing AO3 usernames in order to make their accusations seem more legitimate. They may also try to lure people onto other platforms (similar to the art commission scam), or use fake links that actually lead to pornographic images.
As always, we recommend that you do not click on any suspicious links or give your contact information to scammers. Instead, simply mark the comments as spam or report them so that the Policy & Abuse committee can remove comments left by these spambots.
Learn how to recognize them and what to do below the cut!
How to recognize this kind of spam:
The comments come from guests, not logged-in users.
The comments may start with praise for you and your writing, trying to lull you into a false sense of security. Or they may claim that you are a bad writer, trying to make you too upset to realize that the comments are fake.
The comments may accuse you or another user of promoting discriminatory beliefs, deceiving fans, or similar behaviors that might cause other people to shun or harass the accused individual. They may claim that they checked social media to find that the accused user is "brazenly sharing hateful content" or "bragging about using AI".
The comments are often pleading or angry, asking you to "stop lying to your readers", "don't remove the AI prompts from your work", or suggesting that you "consider adding more diverse characters" to "repair the trust you've lost with your audience".
So far, these comments have all been from guests. Our advice is to flag them as spam to better filter them out.
To help train our automated spam-checker to block similar guest comments in the future:
If the comment is on your own work:
Go directly to the comment on your work, either by clicking on the link in your email or in your AO3 inbox.
Click on the "Spam" button to mark the guest comment as spam and remove it from your work.
Note: The "Spam" button only appears when viewing a guest comment directly on your work. This is because the AO3 comment inbox is merely a copy of the work's comments â deleting a comment from your AO3 inbox does not delete the comment from the work itself.
If you see comments like these on someone else's work:
Feel free to let the creator know the comment is from a bot, and that they should mark it as spam.
You can also report the comments as botspam via the Policy Questions & Abuse Reports form linked at the bottom of every page on AO3.
If you are reporting multiple guest comments, please submit only one report, and include all comment links in your report description. (You can get the direct link to any comment by clicking the "Thread" button on the comment, and then copying the URL of that page.)
As of December 2025, bots have also left guest comments harassing users by:
threatening to report you/your fic to the authorities or your employers
alleging security concerns like your email being compromised or spyware on your computer
claiming that they know your address and are going to visit you at your house
saying that you will die alone and unemployed over the holidays
What these bots claim is not true. These accusations do not mean your work will be deleted or that your accounts are insecure. We recommend that you mark these comments as spam following the instructions in our previous post.
These examples also do not represent the full range of harassment comments that you may receive. We will continue to try and keep you updated about trends; however, please note that the exact wording the bots use will continue to evolve.
If you're not sure if something is a spambot comment, you're welcome to contact Policy & Abuse for assistance. Refer to the original post for more information!

Feng Xin paused outside the door of his assigned dorm room, one hand clenched around the handle of his suitcase like it might bolt if he let go. The hallway buzzed with lifeâlaughter spilling from open doors, the scrape of furniture being dragged across tile, voices calling out names and directions. It was loud and chaotic and unmistakably new, and the sound of it sent a nervous thrill straight down his spine.
This was it. No parents hovering, no familiar routines to fall back on. University. Independence. He inhaled slowly, squared his shoulders, and reminded himself that he could do this. Then, before he could overthink it, he twisted the handle and pushed the door open.
Being a writer is wild because one minute youâre convinced youâre a genius and the next youâre googling âsynonyms for walkâ like youâve never used language before.

âHeâs not sure,â Hoshiumi sighed, defeated. âThat means he knows about the feelings. He knows theyâre mutual. And theyâre still not together yet.â
âSo, what should we do?â Romero asked, still unreasonably invested.
âMove on to project kagehina?â Hoshiumi suggested.
Smugly, Kageyama flashed them his lockscreen: a selfie of him and Hinata, cheeks squished together and hearts floating around them.
OR: after realising Tendou & Ushijima's feelings for each other, Hoshiumi drags the Adlers into concocting a plan to get them together. Little do they know, ushiten have been married for years - and Tendou thinks it's hilarious to pretend they're just best friends.
âIâm just amazed youâre still friends with so many people from highschool,â Romero commented, leaning into a stretch as Kageyama held his phone in front of his teammateâs face, flicking through pictures from Karasunoâs most recent get together. âI mean, I know youâre not long out or anything, butâŠâ
âI might not see many of my old teammates anymore, but most people I met at the Team Japan youth camp now play professionally,â Hoshiumi reasoned. âI see them every season.â
âKarasuno still call me after my matches,â said Kageyama, having given up on showing Romero and instead just looking through the pictures himself.
âShiratorizawa still come to watch me play,â Ushijima agreed. âEven Satori, when he can.â
âDoesnât he live in France?â Romero asked, impressed.
âYes,â said Ushijima. âBut he visits. He says he likes watching me play.â
âDoes he now?â Hoshiumi waggled his eyebrows suggestively.
âYes,â Ushijima repeated, clearly not getting it. âIâll introduce you next time.â
âIâll look forward to it,â Romero told him, and then Kageyama finally found a picture he hadnât passed around yet, and the conversation was forgotten.

âThis is Tendou Satori,â Ushijima introduced, still sweaty and slightly out of breath from their match half an hour previously. They had only just finished their cool downs before heâd been racing off (well, the Ushijima equivalent of racing off) to fish his friend out of the crowd and bring him back to the Adlers.
âTendou,â Kageyama greeted, because he apparently knew everyone and their cat.
âKageyama,â Tendou returned, because there is no forgetting Kageyama once you meet him - Romero knew that only too well.
âNice to meet you,â said Romero, even though he was already getting unnerved. Tendou had bright red hair cropped close to his head, eyes practically popping out of his head with manic energy, and a slightly terrifying grin that seemed to stretch right across his face. Still, he was clinging happily to Ushijima, jabbering on about one thing or the other while Ushijima attempted to direct him to each of the Adlers in turn. Tendou greeted each one enthusiastically before going back to talking aboutâŠ.what was he talking about? Romero liked to think he was getting good at Japenese, but Tendouâs rapid-fire chatter was very different to Ushijimaâs measured word choice.
âWhatâs he talking about?â Romero whispered to Hirugami.
âUshijimaâs serves, I think,â Hirugami whispered back.
âYou think?â
âHeâs talking too fast for me to process properly.â
Well, at least Romero wasnât alone in his struggle. âIâm getting too old for this.â
Hirugami fixed him with a long look. âI know the feeling, but please donât leave me. I canât deal with the team alone.â
Romero grinned. âYou say that like I didnât give Kageyama the idea to stick volleyballs in the gym ceiiling as set practice.â
âTHAT WAS YOU?â
Oops. Maybe Captain hadnât known about that one.
âDo I smell shenanigans?â Tendou cooed from the opposite side of the room. From anyone else it mightâve come across as a terrible pre-rehearsed line, but Tendou seriously gave the impression of a man who could physically smell shenanigans.
âNo,â Hirugami assured him, clearly also thinking Tendou was a force he didnât want to reckon with. âItâs all in the past.â
âUnderstatement,â Kageyama muttered. Tendou clearly heard him, and gave him a wild beaming smile.
âMy reputation proceeds me!â He tugged (quite violently, actually) at Ushijimaâs arm, which he had taken to holding as they held their procession around the room. âDid you hear that, Toshi? The great and famous setter Kageyama Tobio remembers me~â
âHe greeted you first,â Ushijima reminded him.
âRemembering my name and remembering me are two different things,â Tendou said, with the air of someone giving an important lecture. Ushijima nodded like that actually was what was happening.
âYou two are fucking crazy,â said Hoshiumi.
âThank you!â said Tendou. He lifted a hand to squeeze Ushijimaâs shoulder. âWeâre best friends for a reason, after all!â
Romero raised an eyebrow, looking pointedly at Tendouâs hand on Ushijimaâs shoulder, still squeezing. His other hand was still hanging off Ushijimaâs arm, while Ushijima had his elbow stuck slightly out to allow a full grown man the size of Tendou - easily 6â1, though without the muscle mass of a professional athlete - to tuck himself into his side. They looked comfortable; domestic, to be honest. Romero felt slightly like he was looking at his parents, despite them being significantly younger than him. They were just that easy with each other.
âAre you sure?â asked Hoshiumi, always the straight-talker.
ââŠAre we sure weâre friends?â Tendou returned. âYep!â
âWhy would we not be?â Ushijima asked, looking puzzled.
âI mean, are you sure youâre just friends?â Hoshiumi clarified.
It was Kageyamaâs turn to look puzzled. âThey look like just friends to me.â
âTheyâre linking arms,â said Sokolov.
âHinata does that to me all the time.â
Tendou cackled at that. âOh, I bet he does.â
âYeah, I just told you he does.â
âI mean, my dear Kageyama, that Hinata may be hinting at something else there,â Tendou explained. His hand had slipped off Ushijimaâs shoulder and past its counterpart hooked around Ushijimaâs elbow, coming to rest over Ushijimaâs hand. âYou should call him.â
Kageyama looked absolutely bamboozled. âI need to call him..?â
âYou can do it,â said Tendou, surprisingly supportive, and then turned his manic grin on Ushijima. âCan we get crepes now?â
It wasnât until much later that Romero realised how skilfully Tendou had dodged Hoshiumiâs interrogation.

âTheyâve GOT to know,â Hoshiumi insisted, swiping the diagram of the volleyball court to the side in order to make room for his notebook.
âThat was our match plan,â said Hirugami.
âI know,â said Hoshiumi. âIâve been here the whole time.â
âWhoâs âgot to knowâ what?â asked Kageyama, staring mournfully at the incomplete starting positions. âI want to know whoâs on next week.â
âYouâre always on,â Romero assured him. âDonât worry about it.â
âPAY ATTENTION,â Hoshiumi boomed.
âI have to eat my dinner before my recovery window closes,â said Ushijima.
âYou are excused,â said Hoshiumi.
âSo do I,â said Heiwajima.
âYou stay here,â said Hoshiumi.
Ushijima gave them an odd look, but clearly the call of his chicken and rice was too strong; he sidled out of the meeting room, making sure not to hit anyone with his bag.
Hoshiumi waited for the doors to swing shut behind him. âI honestly forgot he was here, so thank god he went.â
âWhy did he need to go?â asked Kageyama, reaching out for the court diagram. Hoshiumi snatched it out of his reach and stuffed it under the table.
âFocus, Kageyama,â he snapped. âWe need to get Tendou and Ushijima together.â
âOh,â Sokolov said, resurfacing from wherever heâd allowed his mind to wander during the team meeting. âI thought they were married.â
âI didnât see any rings,â Hirugami pointed out.
âI was going off vibes.â
âWe need to be more concrete than that,â Hoshiumi insisted. âThey clearly like each other, and as loyal teammates-â
âLoyal teammates respect each otherâs eating windows,â Heiwajima complained.
âBe quiet, Waji-san. Iâm trying to help Ushijima here.â
Heiwajima crossed his arms. âThis is favouristism.â
âLetâs hear him out,â Hirugami told him with a tired sigh. âThen maybe we can go home quicker.â
âThanks, Cap!â Hoshiumi beamed. âIâm going to ignore that last bit!â
âTHANK you! We have a very limited time before Tendou goes home, so Iâll get straight to the point: we need to make them date.â
âHow?â Sokolov started swinging on his chair like a middle schooler. âItâs not like we could just lock them in a closet or whatever. Theyâre obviously comfortable being close.â
Surreptitiously, Hoshiumi crossed somethiing out of his notebook and cleared his throat. âSo uh. Anyone else have anything theyâre sure wonât work?â
âWhatever it is, itâs got to be obvious,â Romero pointed out. âFor them to get so close and still be friends, theyâre clearly dense.â
âJust look at Kageyama,â Hirugami agreed. âHe got told to his face that Hinata wanted something more and theyâre still dithering.â
âWeâre not dithering! I havenât called him yet!â
âDear, sweet Jesus. I do not deserve this.â
âWeâll get on to Kageyama later,â Hoshiumi assured them. âOne at a time, yâknow?â
âHow about we donât,â Hirugami suggested. âHow about we leave everyone to sort everything by themselves?â
âThatâs boring,â said Kageyama, clearly now feeling assured they would not get to him.
âThatâs boring,â Romero agreed, because he wasnât going to leave Kageyama hanging after putting his life on the line like that.
âTraitor,â Hirugami hissed at him. Romero shrugged; he hadnât sworn an oath of loyalty or anything.
The door swung back open. âI forgot my other bag,â Ushijima explained. âForgive my intrusion.â
The bag was hurriedly passed along the row of athletes. Ushijima receieved it with a grateful bow and left again.
Hoshiumi turned back to the meeting, a little ashen. âDo you think he heard any of that?â
âI donât think he cares,â said Kageyama.
Hirugami used the heel of his palm to scrub at his eyes. âThat is the truest thing youâve said all day.â
-
-
âTheyâre trying to get us together,â Ushijima told Tendou, beginning to chop the spring onions.
âI know,â said Tendou. âWhy do you think I told them we were best friends?â
-
-
âNo Tendou today?â Hoshiumi asked surreptitiously, using his forearm to wipe sweat from his hairline.
âSatori is busy atâŠhis Japan office today,â Ushijima replied, checking his phone.
âDid you just check his location? Do you share your locations??â
âShould we not?â
âI share my location with Shoyo,â Kageyama interrupted.
âOh, itâs Shoyo now, is it?â Romero teased.
-
-
âTheyâre taking a very long time to put anything together,â Ushijima observed.
âThatâs because you people only think about volleyball.â
-
-
âAre these from Tendou?â Heiwajima probed.
âYes,â said Ushijima. âDo you not want one?â
Heiwajima shoved his hand into the bag and came out with a handful of chocolates. âI will be havingâŠâ he quickly counted how many he was holding. âSix. Thanks, Ushijima.â
âIs he still in Japan?â asked Hoshiumi, gracefully (for once) only taking one from the bag he was offered.
âFor a few more weeks,â Ushijima nodded, turning to offer the chocolate to Hirugami. âCaptain?â
âThanks,â said Hirugami, though his face was saying he needed alcohol more than a sweet. Hoshiumi had begun to whisper furiously to Kageyama, Â who had to bend down slightly. Hirugami watched them with tired eyes. âDo you ever feel like retiring, Ushijima?â
âNo,â said Ushijima.
âI thought not.â
âDoes Tendou want to come to our team night out on Saturday?â Hoshiumi asked.
âI will ask him.â
-
-
âOf COURSE I want to go! This is gonna be so much fun!â

The izakaya was hot and sticky, and not at all in a good way. The air felt heavy, and the Adlerâs elbows were getting stuck to the table as they tried to lean forwards to hear each other.
Tendou, of course, didnât need anyone to lean closer; whatever they couldnât physically hear (which wasnât much, that guy was loud), they could gather from his wild gestures, or even read his lips - he was potentially the only person on earth to genuinely use his whole mouth to talk. He also tended to repeat whatever Ushijima said.
âDoes he know we can hear Ushijima too?â Kageyama asked, which was true; Ushijima talked simply and clearly but by no means quietly. He was confident in what he had to say.
âI think he just wants us all to know what his precious Wakatoshi is saying,â Hoshiumi grinned. ââOh, Toshi, youâre so funny! Hee hee hee!â and heâs talking about muscle groups.â
âAhh, young love,â said Romero.
âDID YOU HEAR THAT?â Tendou yelled over the music and chatter. âTOSHI SAYS HEâS STARTING A GARDEN NEXT YEAR!â
âHow does he find the time?â Hirugami asked, sounding genuinely intrigued.
âI stick to my schedule,â Ushijima told him.
âHE STICKS TO HIS-â
âWE CAN HEAR HIM!â Hoshiumi screamed. âGET A ROOM!â he added, watching Tendouâs hand creep slowly along Ushijimaâs arm.
âWe are in a room,â said Ushijima.
Hoshiumi tried to hit his head off the table; he got all the way down, only for his forehead to get stuck to the beer-soaked wood.
âTime to go home,â said Hirugami, prising Hoshiumi off.
âSomeone tell Ushijima to take Tendou home,â Hoshiumi said.
âWE HAVE THE SAME HOME,â Tendou laughed. âBUT THANKS.â
-
-
âThat was a very on-the-nose thing to say, Satori.â
âAw, we gotta give them something to work with, donât we?â
-
-
âIf they live together while Tendouâs in Japan, surely their feelings must have come out by now,â Sokolov reasoned, doodling idly.
âTheyâve known each other a long time, they must have a routine that makes it easy to stay friends,â Hoshiumi disagreed. âOr! Maybe asking Tendou to move in was a confession that Tendou didnât notice!â
âI can believe that,â Romero nodded. âUshijima isnât exactly expressive.â
âI dunno, I always know what he means,â said Kageyama.
âBe quiet, Kageyama,â Hoshiumi huffed. âYouâre as bad as him.â
âNeither of us are bad!â
âMaybe we should ask them,â Sokolov suggested.
âHey, Ushijima! Are you and Tendou together?â Heiwajima called.Â
Ushijima looked up from his own notebook. âI am not sure.â
-
-
âThatâs hilarious!â Tendou cackled.
âI didnât know if we were revealing it,â Ushijima explained as Tendou swung his feet up into his lap. Â
âI think you gave them the best answer,â Tendou assured him. âBut for the future- well, you can say whatever you want. I donât mind!â
-
-
âHeâs not sure,â Hoshiumi sighed, defeated. âThat means he knows about the feelings. He knows theyâre mutual. And theyâre still not together yet.â
âSo, what should we do?â Romero asked, still unreasonably invested.
âMove on to project kagehina?â Hoshiumi suggested.
Smugly, Kageyama flashed them his lockscreen: a selfie of him and Hinata, cheeks squished together and hearts floating around them.
âWoah,â said Tendou. âThose are some weak-willed teammates.â
Ushijima absent-mindedly rubbed Tendouâs close-cropped hair. âI think they are just dense.â
Tendou snorted. âYouâd sure know about that, wouldnât you?â He leaned into Ushijimaâs hand. âTheyâre not as cute about it as you are, either.â
-
-
âAm I hallucinating?â Hoshiumi demanded, shoving card into Kageyamaâs face. âDid you get this too?â
âThe invitation to their anniversary dinner? Yeah.â
âTOLD you they were married,â said Sokolov, triumphantly.
âYou mightâve said it, but you didnât believe it,â Hoshiumi sniffed. âAnd you-â he rounded on Ushijima â-you said you didnât know!â
âI was not sure if we were hiding it,â said Ushijima. âWould you like a chocolate?â
âI feel very betrayed and hurt,â Hoshiumi told him. âI am offended, and I am heartbroken, and I feel slightly ridiculous for not noticing earlier, and- yes, I would like a chocolate, please.â
The next day, the five of them were sitting at the table, coming up with a game plan. Andrew and Aaron looked worse for wear. Neil wished he knew how to help instead of simply knowing it wasnât going to get any easier.
âSo, what happened to Riko?â Neil said, leaning back in his chair. Heâd been wondering it since after the chaos had died down and he processed his emotions with Beeâs death.
âWho cares?â Aaron muttered. Â Kevin, the only one of them who could eat right now, nodded in agreement around his mouthful of Chex cereal. It looked casualâKevin chewing slowly, shoulders squared like he was unaffectedâbut Neil caught the way Kevinâs eyes lingered on the table for a beat too long, the way his jaw tightened like the motion of eating was more deliberate than natural.

Neil's phone buzzed once on the nightstand. He didnât expect anything besides some notification from a game Nicky downloaded on his phone, but he flipped his phone over anyways.
Andrewâs name was the first thing he saw, a simple message in a simple notification bubble.
From: Andrew
late night drive
Sent at 12:46 a.m..
No punctuation. No preamble. Just like him.
Neil woke up sandwiched between Andrew and the wall, his arm tossed over Andrewâs side. The sight and feeling brought warmth to his heart. He had fucked up, majorly, and yet Andrew still let him touch him. He knew he was lucky to get that.
He looked over Andrew to Kevin, who was sleeping peacefully against Andrewâs side. Neil still wasnât exactly sure how the three of them had managed to fit in Andrewâs bed, but theyâd made it work. Somehow. He was just gladâand maybe a little disappointed, because it wouldâve been funnyâthat Kevin hadnât fallen off.
The dorm was too quiet when Kevin stepped inside. Not the kind of quiet that meant peace, but the kind that settled in your chest like smoke. Heavy. Suffocating.
He didnât bother turning on the lights. The sun was already slipping past the windows, throwing long shadows across the floor. It was easier like this, to pretend for a moment that nothing had changed. That the silence was just silence, not absence.
He had just gotten home from practice, still damp with sweat and sore from drills he hadnât been sharp enough for. He stretched, joints popping in protest, the ache settling deep in his legs, a dull reminder of everything he still wasnât doing right. A headache bloomed slowly behind his eyesâtoo many hours under fluorescent lights, too much noise in his own head.
In which Kevin Day receives a phone call that will change his life forever.
