Toby shrugged as Naveen declined the offer, never one to pressure someone to smoke with him. Instead, he put out the cigarette he’d just been smoking and pulled out a joint to replace it, figuring he could smoke some of it before he went back inside. As he lit the joint, he gave Naveen a smile in return. “Nothing specific, honestly. Just anything that gets me through the night,” he admitted. Taking a drag from the joint, he chuckled once he exhaled the smoke. “Thanks for the offer, but .. I don’t know if I should be getting into the dating game right now.”

The rejection of his offer to be Toby’s wing-man seemed to carry more than just a disinterest in playing the field tonight. It seemed like the young man was going through something that made him reluctant to get into the dating game, and while Naveen was the last person to go to for meaningful relationship advice, he was the first to come to for forgetting one’s problems. “Who said anything about dating?” he replied, quirking a brow. “I think a casual hook-up may be just what you need to distract yourself. It is up to you, though.”

Tiana scoffed. “Don’t even start gettin’ ahead of yourself like that,” she said, but she was mostly teasing. She did sort of enjoy his company. In like a…work way! Yeah, a work way. He was nice to work with. And when he wasn’t acting like a complete fool he had the potential to be funny. That was it. “If I entertain that ego of yours for even a second, you will never ever let me live it down. So, no thank you.”

At his question she shrugged. She was trying to play it off that she wasn’t that cold but then his jacket was around her and it did feel awfully nice so she chose not to comment. At his other comment she just rolled her eyes. She knew she was an awful conversationalist. She didn’t do anything aside from work and entertain Lottie, with the occasional cooking or food related activity with other friends of hers. “Well, I am so sorry that you have to suffer like this,” she said sarcastically, shaking her head. “What would you like to talk about, then? Since you’re the smooth-talker here.”

He shrugged, smiling even as she refused to flatter him with an acknowledgement that she found him anything more than tolerable, because she was right—if gave him that much, Naveen would probably never let it go. Despite her evident reluctance to let him get away with anything, ever, the fact that she accepted his coat without any remarks was quietly encouraging on its own. Perhaps they could get along after all. Even if she was terrible at small talk.

“Don’t worry. It is difficult, but I will survive,” he replied, pretending to take her sarcasm as a sincere apology just to bug her further. He didn’t know why he did it, really; at the same time as he considered the possibility of their becoming friends, Naveen still couldn’t resist pushing Tiana’s buttons and trying to get a reaction. He grinned and skipped a step ahead, turning around to walk backwards so that he could see her face as they spoke. “Oh, so you think I am smooth, hmm? That is good to know.”

Binx momentarily wondered if this was part of their brain fog as a cat again — After all, the frog was making it seem like they were crazy to have never had a conversation with another animal before. Had they, without remembering? There was really no way to tell. Right here, right now though, they were completely conscious and understanding everything they were saying. Surely, Binx would remember this when he woke back up as himself. “I haven’t,” they answered, shaking its head. “But … I’m not actually a cat,” they admitted, unsure if the frog would understand what they meant by that. Perhaps they finally met someone similar to himself, cursed and left to survive as an animal at each full moon. “Are you …. Are you actually a frog?”

The admission that the cat was not actually a cat finally earned Naveen’s full interest. While he’d had plenty of interactions with genuine animals, he had never before met anyone with his same...condition. That had to be what the not-a-cat was referring to; they were a man like himself who was cursed or otherwise afflicted by turning into a creature—it explained everything about how strange the non-cat was acting. “No!” he cried in a mixture of surprise and relief as his new friend asked whether he was truly a frog. “Well, now I am, but only for tonight. Every other day I am human, apart from when the moon is full...Are you like me, then?”

sibella was just itching for something exciting, hence her choice in wonderland. it was filled with so many strange people that sibella didn’t feel so out of place. she loved to dance with the strangers and just….get lost in it all. tonight was no different and the stranger she had caught the eye of seemed to have good time written all over him. she wasn’t even a little shy about dancing close to him and making sure it was clear that he was her interest of the night. it didn’t help that he just smelled….well….delicious. his blood had magic in it, that was obvious, but it was different than some of the others….almost like a dark aura was circling it but sibella still wanted to find out what that meant herself. she could hear mavis in the back of her head telling her not to but she just couldn’t help herself.

after dancing for what felt like a lifetime, sibella took a step back and looked up at him. “did you want to get a drink? you look a little parched.”

Naveen could have danced forever, especially when his partner for the night—for that was what this dark-haired beauty had become as she maintained her spot close to him for the past hour at least—was so enchanting. But the last thing he was going to do was reject her offer to get a drink, more than willing to step over to the bar for a while and chat...or more importantly, figure out whether this spark between them was going anywhere further than the dance-floor tonight. “I can think of nothing that I would like more,” he answered with a grin, leading the way. “Well, perhaps a few things...”

If it had been another night, maybe Adella would have been just too drunk to notice. But no, drunk as she was, she was sure she’d seen something in his eyes as he responded, and suddenly things felt a little heavy. She hadn’t meant to do that. She had wanted things to be fun and lively! Not sad. She didn’t want Naveen sad! She wanted him happy…

She pouted, dancing up close to him, and put a hand on either side of his chest. “No,” she said simply at first. And then, Adella smiled, the kind of soft smile she used to give him when they first started dating and she was trying to make sure everything was going okay. “No being sad. I’m right here!” She was right here, wasn’t she? She put his hands on her hips, the soft silk of her dress hopefully soothing for them both. Her head felt a little spinny and Naveen was probably too close, but the alcohol made her warm and told her everything was good. Better than good, even. If Naveen was sad about missing her, then maybe they had another chance? “I’m right here, right? Let’s just keep dancing.”

As long as they had the music, Adella could fool herself into thinking anything was possible. She wanted to say she missed him. But then she’d definitely be making things sad. She didn’t want sad, she wanted Naveen’s smile and his hands on her hips and maybe, just maybe, she could convince him a kiss wasn’t a bad idea. But in order to do that, she had to be extra charming. So she bit at her lip and flashed him her eyes the best she could in the club’s dim lighting. “Have I ever told you you’re my favorite dance partner?”

He let her slide his hands onto her hips, pulling her closer as she gave him a familiar smile that took him back to when they were a couple. Adella was being all-too sweet, reassuring him that she was right here, right here, and he knew he had made a mistake—slipping up and letting true emotion show through his carefully constructed facade. This was bad. This had given her hope; he could see it in her eyes.

Anyone else would have taken those eyes dark eyes, the soft bottom lip she bit as if to specifically to draw attention to her mouth, and run with it...and it was extremely difficult not to. Yet the more enticing she presented herself as, the harder Naveen knew he had to resist. It was one thing to hurt somebody so precious once; to do so twice would make him less than a man. Not that he wasn’t already less than a man—but at least he had a choice in this aspect.

“If you are trying to woo me,” he answered her in a low voice, his smile remaining even as he raised an eyebrow in warning, “It won’t work. We have been down this road before.” He wanted to keep the tone light, the point being to avoid hurting Adella again, but at the same time he had to be firm enough so that she wouldn’t get the wrong idea.

Toby wasn’t sure what Chace had or hadn’t told Naveen about Alice, so it was safe to assume that their friend was oblivious to all the drama that had recently gone down. He turned his head to face Naveen as he sat beside him, a small smile forming. “That’s what I like to hear! I could probably use a night of fun, myself,” he admitted with a chuckle, continuing to smoke the cigarette in his hand. “Well, I’ve got some good shit with me, if you wanna kick the night up a notch. I wasn’t planning on actually getting work done tonight, anyway.”

“Nah,” Naveen answered as Toby offered to share with him; alcohol was more than enough of a drug to keep him entertained—for the most part, just being in an environment with music and dancing (and attractive women and men) was all he really needed. It was a generous offer, though, letting him know that the younger man really did consider him a friend; that was touching. Grinning, Naveen asked, “If you aren’t planning to work, then what kind kind of trouble are you looking for? Do you need a wing-man?”

The more the frog spoke, the more the cat’s head began to spin. His answers only caused more questions to arise, it’s head tilting curiously once again. “I can’t disagree with that..” They replied, words obviously hesitant as they were trying to piece things together. Binx had never had a conversation with an animal before — cats would meow at them, dogs would bark, but it only sounded like sounds and nothing more. This was a conversation, as if two humans were talking, and though Binx knew that he was really a human, what did that say about this frog? “Is that something you normally do? Talk to other animals, I mean..”

Naveen didn’t have shoulders to shrug currently, so he blinked slowly at the cat’s question. In fact, he spent most full moons in the comfort of his home, not exactly relishing the idea of being eaten by a wild animal—or worse—on the one night of the month he was cursed to be a frog. But sometimes, on a rare occasion like tonight, he was tempted to get some fresh air, and of course he had met and spoken with other creatures on such excursions. Besides that, the family pets he had grown up with in his parents’ estate were quite good conversationalists. “Sure. And why not? Don’t tell me you have never spoken with another animal.”

A coincidence? Did that mean Naveen had been thinking about her, too? It was hard not for his hand on her waist to feel too familiar, so suddenly. She smiled, wider this time, butterflies in her stomach. “Great minds,” she giggled, and gave him a small little ‘boop’ on the nose. When he accepted her dance proposal she clapped. “Yes! Perfect, you know I’m a good dancer. I never disappoint.”

How long had it been since she’d danced with Naveen? Oh, she shouldn’t be thinking about it. But it was too late, and she was already laughing as he swept her towards the dance floor. She took his hands as she begun to sway her hips to the rhythm, feeling alive and maybe, partly, wanting to show him how lively she could be.

She could be fun, right? She knew how to have fun. “You’ve missed me, haven’t you?”

There was truth to what Adella said; she never disappointed. Naveen couldn’t help his grin as they began to dance—so far, she was probably the favorite dance partner he’d ever had. The music always seemed to flow through her and move her body to the sound, never missing a beat. It was as easy as ever to forget his worries when they were together, but as soon as she asked if he’d missed her, the good feelings sank.

The truth was that even if he had missed her, he shouldn’t, he couldn’t allow himself to miss anybody. And because he couldn’t give her—or Charlotte, or Anastasia or any of his exes—the love they deserved, he hoped they wouldn’t waste theirs on him. Naveen always tried to cut things off right when they started to get too real. It was easier for everyone that way.

“Please, don’t ask questions like that,” he replied, fixing his smile as best he could, though some something else might have still leaked through. “You’ll only make me sad.”

Tiana raised an eyebrow at him. She had already had a hard time believing his excuse and then he mentioned a ride and she just laughed while shaking her head at him. “Sorry to disappoint you, but I did walk tonight.” She knew he offered to walk her home but she had a feeling he was really hoping for a ride. “But I guess you can walk me home tonight. I actually feel like havin’ company for once.” She honestly didn’t care either way but she didn’t want Naveen to know that. He was trying to be sweet and that was a pretty rare moment. “Let me lock up and we can start headin’ out, okay?”

She did just that. Gently ushering him out and locking the door behind her. It was kind of chilly tonight and Tiana knew she should have brought a heavier coat despite how warm it was when she first came in. Luckily, the walk wasn’t too long. “I suppose I need to lead the way since it is to my place…” She started walking but not at her normal pace so Naveen could keep up. “Are you…Are you havin’ a good evenin’?” She realized she didn’t really know how to have casual conversation so she figured she start off lame. “I mean aside from work….”

Her acceptance of his offer to walk her home was actually more than Naveen was expected, and he couldn’t help a delighted smile from taking over his features. It wouldn’t have taken too much self-control to stop himself in that moment, as he immediately ruined the opportunity she gave him to prove that he wasn’t a total buffoon by teasing her. “Careful—I might start to think that you actually enjoy being around me.” Laughing as she basically shooed him out of the restaurant so she could lock up, he pulled the collar of his coat up around his neck to protect from the chill in the night air, only to notice Tiana’s thinner jacket as she moved past him to begin the walk to her place.

“Aren’t you cold?” he asked, catching up to keep pace at her side, which seemed more casual than hurried as he was used to seeing from Tiana. He was already taking his coat off to wrap around her shoulders, shaking his head at her pitiful attempt at small talk; it was like she had never spoken about anything besides her job before. “Well...aside from work, all I have done tonight is walk a lady to her door. And she is a terrible conversationalist, I’m afraid.”

This was the most forward he’d ever seen the other man, but it was clear that Florian was beyond inebriated—Naveen wondered if he would even remember saying something like this the next day, and guessed not. That meant he could have a little fun and flirt back, although of course it would go no further; pretty soon he would be making sure his friend didn’t pass out in public. How to get him home in such a state? “Hm, I don’t know,” he answered, putting an arm around Flor to keep the gentleman steady. “Perhaps you need to have a taste to find out.”
