Malena Josephine Isobel Charming (nee Fetcini). Nineteen years of age. 7th year at Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry with a specialization in dragon keeping and care.
Babette rose a brow and looked towards her. “Given you were sleeping, mon amour - yeah I would assume it was just a dream. You alright? “Â
Malena sighed in relief when she realized it was just Babette, not a member of faculty or a member of her family. She sat up and pulled the blanket off of her.
“I’m fine,” she cleared her throat, “just a nightmare. Nothing more.”
“Last time I checked, it was a little before seven. I only woke you because you were literally screaming. ” Madeline had only entered the room, hoping to find a quiet place to catch up with her homework. She was falling further behind with each passing day, and she knew that it wasn’t acceptable. The sleeping girl hadn’t been a problem until she had started her nightmare.
Malena nodded as Madeline spoke. She had tried to cover her mouth with the blanket before falling asleep to keep herself from calling out if she had a nightmare, but apparently it didn’t work. She looked at the clock and rubbed her eyes, knowing that she should probably get started on her homework.
“Don’t mention to this to anyone,” she looked up at Madeline,”not the headmaster, and especially not my family.” Madeline wouldn’t be able to anyway as her family lived in New Mexico and Mexico, but she didn’t need news of another episode getting back to them.
Madeline wasn’t normally in the habit of waking up anyone that was having a nap, but the other girl was clearly having a distressing dream, so she deemed it the best plan of action. “I never said you were crazy. In fact, I hadn’t actually said anything yet.” She kept her tone gentle, knowing that being woken up was never pleasant.Â
Malena wrinkled her nose and pursed her lips. She had a habit of immediately defending herself after being woken up from nightmares, as she knew her family was on the verge of staging a psychiatric intervention for her. She nodded and sat up, “Right... What time is it?”
“I am not crazy!” Malena insisted to the person who had woken her up from one of her nightmares. Classes were over for the day and she was exhausted, so she flopped down on the couch and took a nap. Unfortunately, she wasn’t blessed with one of her good dreams.
“It was just a dream, okay?” she pinched the bridge of her nose and scowled.
Dimension Shift Bio || Malena Charming || 20 || New Money
Malena’s paternal side of the family is very, very new money. After a lucky investment and unprecedented success with a new business venture, Malena’s family went from middle class to having more money than she could count. Previously a Fetcini, she sent shockwaves through the community by marrying the heir of an elite old money family, Princeton Charming. Their marriage was met with outrage from the old money community, and especially from his parents, but unfortunately their love didn’t last. A week after marrying, her husband was poisoned and murdered while they were getting coffee together. Malena isn't sure if their marriage spurred the murder or the legal issues with his father, but her mind is set on the former.
Malena often has dreams of green flame, a blue sparkling outline of a dragon, and other things that could only be described as magic. There’s a pull to them, to the dreams, as if she’s being beckoned somewhere other than this life. Some of them are wondrous and leave her aching for adventure, but the others are terrifying. Often she’ll wake up screaming and crying, clawing at her chest as if something’s inside that needs to get out.
Her family thinks the trauma of witnessing her husband’s murder has made her crazy, and with every episode the looming choice of psychiatric intervention draws nearer.Â
Malena had been home for about a week when her birthday rolled around. In the previous months Dimitri and Carlita had been planning an extravagant party to welcome their daughter into her twenties, but with the state of things they decided to cancel and simply head down to Mexico to spend time with their family by the beach. When they arrived and stepped out of the car, Malena immediately felt a little better with the Mexican summer sun shining down on her and the sound of crashing waves around her.Â
“Nieta,” Aurelius and Josephine came outside to meet them and gave Malena a kiss on the forehead, “happy birthday.”
“Gracias, abuelo, abuela,” Malena smiled the best she could before turning away from them and getting her bag out of the car. Her parents made small talk with her grandparents while they headed inside, and once they were in the foyer Malena excused herself to her room to unpack. Her family watched her head up the staircase with sad eyes, wishing they could help but knowing that nothing could be done at the present.
Bag and makeup case in hand, Malena headed for her room in the East wing of the estate. She passed the rooms Anastasia and Princeton had stayed in during their visits but quickly pushed that thought from her mind. Once she was in her room she unpacked her clothes, hanging them neatly in her wardrobe and setting her shoes in a row underneath. When she was finished, she took her backpack with her out onto the balcony and sat down, breathing in the ocean breeze around her.
While she was taking personal time away from school, Malena also knew that she had to keep up with her studies considering it was almost the end of the academic year. She kept in contact with her professors and got all the course material she would need to keep her grades in decent standing; all she needed to do was complete the assignments and send it back to Ilvermorny by owl. She was in the middle of typing up a dragon medicine essay on her laptop when her grandmother joined her.
“Malena,” Josephine crossed her legs and folded her hands in her lap, “have they found the person who did this to Princeton?”
“I didn’t think he would do anything about it,” Malena confessed softly, “he’s had people come to him before, wanting to take out contracts like this, he’s always said no.”
“You are his granddaughter, nieta,” Josephine covered Malena’s hand with hers, “he would do anything for you, you know that. You may be a Charming now, but you will always be a Fetcini. Besides, Princeton was your husband, part of our family. No one crosses our family and goes unpunished.”
A small smile tugged at the corner of her lips when her grandmother called Princeton a part of their family. They had attended their wedding, but a part of her wondered if Aurelius and Josephine disapproved given how short their relationship and how quick they were to marry. It made her happy knowing that they loved Princeton, too.
“I can talk to him later tonight,” Malena squeezed Josephine’s hand with a small smile, “after dinner, perhaps.”
“Okay,” Josephine returned the smile and stood, bending down to press a kiss to Malena’s forehead, “be ready at six, our reservation is at six-thirty.” With that, Malena sat her laptop back on her lap and Josephine left her granddaughter to her schoolwork.
It took about three hours in total for Malena to finish her assignments for the week and once she had them printed out she whistled for her grandfather’s owl and set it on its way with the bundle of parchment paper. After that, she had just enough time to do her makeup and get dressed for dinner.
With makeup and hair done to near perfection and a black cocktail dress hugging her curves, Malena went downstairs to meet up with her family. She was grateful that it was just going to be the five of them; her grandparents, parents, and herself. A part of her wasn’t sure how she would handle her entire family being there as well.
“You look lovely, mija,” Carlita smiled before taking her husbands arm.
The car ride to the restaurant was short and provided Malena with a view of the ocean that she had always loved. Dinner went by smoothly, and as always, the food was immaculate. Before they left, Carlita laid a hand on her daughter’s arm and leaned in to speak to her.
“Malena,” she started, “why don’t we do a little shopping after this, just us girls? You love the shops around here, and it is still your birthday, mija.”
Malena took a small sip of her drink before answering her mother, “I’d like that,” she nodded.
Everyone went their separate ways after dinner, Malena’s grandparents and father heading back to the estate while Malena and her mother stayed in the city to do a bit of shopping. Malena managed to find a couple new dresses and a set of earrings that she liked, while her mother picked up new curtains for their house back in New Mexico.
Dusk turned to night rather quickly and when all the shops had closed, Carlita called her husband to come and pick them up. They waited near a bus stop for Dimitri to arrive and Malena noticed a black van parked on the side of the street, but it didn’t seem out of the ordinary to her at the time. Malena and her mother made small talk to pass the time, but they were soon interrupted by a low voice behind them.
“Carlita Fetcini?”
Malena and her mother turned around, and immediately Carlita knew something was off. She pulled her daughter behind her and crossed her arms. “Yes,” she answered suspiciously, “who are you?”
The man smirked deviously and Carlita was about to grab her pepper spray from her purse, but a blow to the back of their heads knocked Malena and her mother unconscious.
__
When Malena awoke, she was propped up against a wall with her wrists bound with a zip tie. The back of her head throbbed wildly but she all but forgot about that when she saw her mother laying next to her, still unconscious. She wasn’t sure where they were or if there were eyes lurking in the shadows, so she did her best to rouse her mother quietly. She did her best to maneuver herself so she was laying on the ground, too, and then she nudged her mother with her heel clad foot.
“Mama,” Malena whispered and nudged her again, sighing in relief when Carlita slowly began to stir, “Mama, are you alright?”
“Si,” her mother groaned and tried to rub the back of her head where she was hit, but her wrists were bound as well, “where are we? Did you recognize that man?”
Malena shook her head and was about to say something when she heard the slamming of a door. Her eyes snapped to where the sound came from, though it was hard to find the exact source of it in the dark. She heard footsteps approaching, stopping right in front of her and her mother. Then, there was silence. Whoever was standing over them, Malena could hear their breathing. Then, there was a dark chuckle and movement, and a choked gasp from her mother made Malena jump.
“Mama?!” Malena shrieked and an overhead light switched on, illuminating her surroundings. Wherever they were, it seemed to be a warehouse, completely empty save for a desk and some empty shelves. Men and women circled around them clad in black with emblems on their jackets. One man had her mother by the arm, practically dragging her along the concrete floor. “Let her go, leave her alone!” Malena struggled against the zip tie that bound her wrists, but her struggling ceased when someone held her still and covered her mouth to keep her quiet.
The man holding her mother snickered at her pleas and threw Carlita back against the concrete floor with such force that a sharp cry fought its way through her lips. “Let her go?” he tapped his chin in mock thought, “I’m afraid we can’t do that. Your mother has to pay for her treason.”
“Treason?!” Carlita looked up at the man and then around at his companions incredulously, “What treason? I have no idea who any of you are.”
“You’re Dimitri Fetcini’s wife, are you not?” Carlita nodded in confusion and the man scowled, “A wizard, so we’ve been told. Why would a perfectly normal woman such as yourself marry an abomination like that, and to bear his child? A witch?” Disgust settled into the man’s voice and features as his gaze moved from Carlita to Malena.
“It’s our job to make sure that creatures like your husband and your daughter are taken care of,” he explained, “how can we do that when people like you are marrying into their world and bearing more abominations?”
“I—” Carlita stuttered and shook her head, “there is nothing wrong with my husband or my daughter or our family. We have done nothing wrong.”
“You’re a traitor of your own kind,” one of his companions stepped forward and handed him something that Malena couldn’t see, but given her mother’s tears and pleas, it couldn’t have been good, “there’s only one way to repay that debt.” The man raised his arm and suddenly Malena could see what her mother was so scared of; a gun. Malena struggled against the person holding her and bit into the skin of their hand as she heard the pistol cock.
“Stop!” Malena screamed, “She’s done nothing wrong. You want to “take care” of people like my father and me? Take me. Kill me and leave her. She’s not magic, she hasn’t done anything!”
“Malena, no!” Her mother cried and their eyes locked as the man chuckled and stepped over to Malena, tilting her chin up with the barrel of the gun in his hands.
“Silly witch,” he snarled, “did you think we weren’t going to take care of you, too? No. First your mother so you can see what you and your father caused her, and then you.” The man turned away from Malena despite her screams and pleas and stood in front of her mother once more, aiming the gun at her.
“Any last words?” he asked as his finger laid against the trigger, and Carlita quickly looked at her daughter.
“Mija,” she cried, “I love you. I love you so much, baby girl. I—”
Whatever Carlita had left to say was cut short by the deafening bang of a gunshot. Time slowed as Malena watched her mother fall back against the concrete floor and blood pooled around her. Through her tears she felt a surge of anger and power and she felt the familiar feeling of flame licking at her fingertips.
“You son of a bitch!” Malena shrieked and a ring of flame pushed out from her, burning the person who had her pinned back. The zip tie binding her wrists snapped and she quickly got to her feet, sending a stream of green flame at the gun pointed at her. With the weapon knocked out of his hand, the rest of his companions charged at her, desperate to take her down, but they stopped short when another gunshot rang out through the warehouse.
There, Dimitri stood in the doorway, seething with rage and hurt at the sight of his wife killed in cold blood. Malena’s cousins, Emilio and Raul stood behind him, weapons in hand as her family stormed the warehouse. Malena stumbled back against the wall, flames still wrapped around her, overwhelmed and heartbroken over everything that had transpired. Time seemed to move slowly again as she watched her family get revenge over their lost matriarch. It wasn’t long until the assailants had either escaped or been killed, and she watched her father kneel over her mother with tears streaming down his cheeks.
It was the first time Malena had ever seen her father cry.
And then something inside of her snapped. Her powers became uncontrollable as she felt a cloud of darkness take her mind. Dimitri looked up at his daughter and quickly got up, making his way over to her.
“Mija—” his voice was strained but Malena cut him short.
“Don’t,” she choked out, keeping her palms against her stomach to keep her flames from hurting anyone else. But Dimitri didn’t listen, instead he took another step forward and cupped his daughter’s cheek.
“Malena—”
“I said don’t!” Malena shrieked and rage flared within her. Her flames had a mind of their own and attacked the source of the distress despite Malena’s attempts to control them. Dimitri screamed as he felt the burning of his daughter’s powers against his skin and he fell back onto the floor, unconscious.
While Malena hadn’t killed him, all she could see was her father laying still the same way her mother was. Her breathing picked up as her grandfather ordered her cousins to control her, and a barrier of flame went up between Malena and the rest of her family.
She ran as fast as she could, barely getting out of the warehouse without getting captured. Once she was far enough from the warehouse, she grabbed her wand from her pursed and apparated to the forest surrounding Greylock’s Landing. She didn’t know where she was going to go, but she had to figure it out quick before her family came after her. It took awhile for her powers to settle but when they did, she shakily got up and headed for Ilvermorny.
Malena wandered around campus after nightfall, the soles of her leather boots scuffing against the cobblestone pathway she walked upon. Thunderbird’s quidditch season and their near success only distracted her for a short while, but once she was back to her normal routine, the crushing loneliness and heartache settled back in. It was excruciating after Princeton died, but now with Anastasia gone, it was unbearable. She had other friends of course like Meg and Jasmine, but she was never as close with them as she was with Anastasia. Ana was her person, her rock, and with her gone Malena felt lost. She was alone. She had no one.
She found herself outside Pukwudgie house, looking up at the darkened window of Anastasia’s old dorm room surrounded by the brightness of all the other lit windows. With a heavy sigh her hand pressed against the bracelet around her wrist, one of the best friend bracelets Princeton had given the Golden Trio at Christmastime. She didn’t understand why Anastasia had to leave and why it had to happen so suddenly, she wondered even more why her best friend didn’t tell her. They could have escaped together. Malena would have been more than fine with that. She felt tears prick at the corners of her eyes and she pushed them back before heading back to Thunderbird.
After showing and slipping into her pajamas, Malena crawled into bed. Her sheets still smelled like Princeton’s cologne, though that was only because she had swiped the bottle from his dorm room before it was cleaned out. It comforted her but intensified the loss at the same time. It reminded her of him, and a part of her was terrified that one day she would forget the sound of his voice or the way he would laugh when she assaulted him with kisses after being apart from each other all day. A few tears slipped down her cheek and onto her pillow and she hastily wiped them away before closing her eyes and trying to fall asleep. It took awhile but eventually she let go of consciousness and slipped into her dreams.
--
When Malena awoke, she was somewhere unfamiliar, yet familiar at the same time. Bright summer light and a cool breeze flowed in through large windows that overlooked the ocean. She sat up and rubbed the sleep from her eyes and moved to push the large fluffy blanket from her, but her hand brushed her stomach and she gasped. Upon waking she had felt a little flutter in her stomach but she didn’t think much of it, but now that her hand was resting on her slightly protruding tummy, she realized that it wasn’t just a flutter. She was pregnant, and her little one was moving.
Malena sat still in shock. This had to be a dream. She distinctly remembered falling asleep in her dorm room at Ilvermorny, but the feeling of the ocean breeze on her skin and the flutter in her tummy made it seem all too real. Once her shock had dissipated, Malena got out of bed and moved towards the double doors that lead out onto a balcony. Her hands ran over the white railing and she looked out towards the sea. She then looked at the outside of the house she was in and noted that it looked eerily similar to the Charming Estate, yet something was off about it, not quite the same. She was so wrapped up in her thoughts that she barely registered the faint “Mama?” coming from the doorway until she felt a little tug at the hem of her black satin robe.
The little tug belonged to a little girl who couldn’t have been more than four. She had flowing raven hair and the most beautiful brown eyes Malena had ever seen. The young one held her arms up and Malena found herself immediately picking her up and holding her close. “Sofia,” Malena found herself breathing out the name and it immediately felt right, as if she hadn’t gone a day without the little girl’s presence. Sofia’s tiny arms wrapped around Malena’s neck while her face nuzzled into the side of it. They stood there for a little while, Malena holding Sofia as the sea breeze tousled her hair, but she jumped when she felt a pair of strong hands sliding around her waist and resting on her baby bump.
“How are my two beautiful girls and little boy this morning?” Princeton’s voice rang clear and shocked Malena to her core. She turned in his arms and stared up at her husband in awe. Princeton was confused by this and looked concerned, “Mi Preciosa, are you alright?”
“Y-yes, yeah, I’m fine,” Malena stuttered out before her free hand came up to caress his cheek, “Sorry, I had the weirdest dream last night. It must be messing with me.”
Princeton chuckled and pressed a light kiss to her lips. “You were the same way when you were pregnant with Sofia,” he pulled back and pressed a kiss to their daughter’s cheek, pulling a delightful giggle from the little girl’s lips at the feeling of her father’s scruff against her cheek, “I’m not surprised you’re having weird dreams again.”
“I suppose I shouldn’t be either,” a light laugh slipped past her lips as the three went back inside and climbed back into bed. Malena’s head rested on Princeton’s shoulder and a strong arm wrapped around her as Sofia shifted to cuddle into her father’s chest. Malena inhaled sharply when she felt a sharp kick to her bladder.
“Is he moving again?” Princeton chuckled softly as he pressed his lips to Malena’s forehead. Malena nodded in response as her hand pressed against her stomach, calming her little one’s erratic movements.
“He has been all morning,” Malena smiled softly as their daughter crawled back into her arms. Sofia was practically Malena’s twin, she had the same olive skin and raven hair and it wasn’t a surprise that she had inherited her mother and father’s sense of adventure. However, she had her father’s beautiful brown eyes and charming smile, a perfect mix of both Princeton and Malena.
“Mama,” Sofia piped up as she played with the wavy ends of her mother’s hair, “I’m hungry.”
“We’ll have to fix that then, won’t we mija?” Princeton smiled as he took their little girl into his arms and got out of bed, “How do waffles sound?” Sofia eagerly nodded her head and wiggled out of her father’s arms before running out of the room and to the kitchen. Malena couldn’t help but chuckle as she got out of bed as well.
“Alexander agrees, he moved when you mentioned waffles.” Malena smiled and pressed a soft kiss to her husband’s lips, sighing contently when his arms wrapped around her waist, “I love you.”
“I love you too, mi preciosa,” Princeton whispered against her lips before pulling away and tucking a strand of her wavy raven hair behind her ear, “we should go start breakfast before Sofia tries to do it herself.” Malena couldn’t help but chuckle and she nodded, taking her husband’s hand as they moved from the bedroom to the kitchen.
True to Princeton’s words, Sofia was standing on her tippy toes in front of the pantry, arms stretched up as far as they could go as she tried to reach the waffle mix. It was a comical sight and Princeton and Malena shared a knowing look before Malena scooped their daughter into her arms, lifting her up so she could grab the box from the shelf. “There, princesa,” Malena cooed softly before placing her back on the hardwood of their kitchen floor, “why don’t you give that to Daddy? You can help him mix everything in the bowl.”
“Okay, Mama.” Sofia giggled and scurried back to Princeton, her feet creating tiny little pitter-patters on the kitchen floor, “Here, Daddy!” Princeton picked her up and shifted her against his hip before taking the box from her. Malena leaned against the counter with a fond, loving smile on her lips as she watched Princeton help their daughter scoop out the batter mix into the bowl. Her heart swelled with happiness knowing that her dream was just a dream, and that she still had Princeton at her side along with their beautiful daughter and growing baby boy.
“Mi amor, do you want coffee?” Malena asked as she filled a sippy cup with apple juice. After giving Sofia her sippy cup and Princeton’s nod as a confirmation, she grabbed the bag of coffee from the cupboard and began to brew it. When it was done, she filled two mugs and set them on the kitchen table. She then helped Princeton carry the plates of waffles and eggs to the table before taking Sofia from his arms and putting her in her chair.
As they ate, Princeton and Malena listened to Sofia babble about preschool and an upcoming field trip to the zoo. Malena chuckled at their daughter’s excitement over seeing polar bears and penguins, but her eyes shifted to her husband when she heard him cough.
“Are you alright, honey?” Malena asked, concern laced in her voice. Her eyebrows furrowed in confusion as Princeton held a hand up to her and covered his mouth with his napkin. Alarm settled into Malena’s chest as he dropped the napkin on the table and quickly stood up, hand clutching at his chest. Bright red blood stained the canary colored fabric and Malena quickly got up from her seat and followed after her husband, her hand coming to rub his back as he tried to catch his breath.
“…Daddy?” Sofia’s voice was small and scared as she watched the scene unfold before her.
Princeton’s hand shakily came out to clutch at Malena’s shoulder before his knees buckled and he collapsed to the floor. Malena and Sofia cried out at the same time, Malena kneeling down beside him while Sofia wiggled out of her chair and hid behind her mother in tears.
“Princeton?” Malena breathed shakily and brushed his hair back. She watched her husband struggle for breath before his eyes went out of focus, and he went still. She pressed a hand to her mouth as sobs wracked her body and pulled Sofia into her chest as their little one cried out for her father. The edges of Malena’s vision began to darken as Sofia called out for her.
“Mama? Mama!” Sofia’s voice echoed in Malena’s ears as she tried to cling on to reality, but soon enough, her world was black
__
Malena awoke with a choked gasp and tears streaming down her cheeks. She looked frantically around her dorm room, praying to God that she would see the bedroom of the Charming Estate and the floor to ceiling windows that overlooked the ocean. Her hand pressed against her stomach and she failed to hold back a sob when instead of a baby bump she felt a flat stomach. She didn’t want this reality. She didn’t want to be alone. She wanted her husband and their little Sofia and Alexander.
She hastily kicked her duvet from the bed and brought her knees up to her chest, wrapping her arms around them as she cried. It had been months since Princeton’s death and Malena had done nothing but push her emotions back and lock them away. Everyone knew she would break eventually, it was just a matter of when and how. Her hands and body trembled as she got out of bed and shakily moved towards her desk. She picked up her phone and scrolled through it, eyes blinded by her tears, before finding who she needed and calling them.
It took a few moments, especially considering it was three in the morning, but after a few rings she heard the sleepy but concerned voice of her mother.
“Malena?” Carlita’s voice was laced with concern and worry, her daughter never called after midnight.
“Mama,” Malena’s voice hitched and she choked back a sob, “I need to come home.”
Malena could hear a sharp intake of breath and her father’s groggy voice asking what was wrong as blankets rustled in the background. “It’s okay, mija,” her mother tried to sooth her over the phone, “it’s okay, come home.”
With that, Malena ended the call and hastily left Thunderbird house with nothing but the pajamas on her body and a pair of slippers on her feet. She trekked across campus and down to Greylock’s Landing before entering the inn she used to floo from home back to campus. With a fistful of floo powder she shakily said her destination and green flames wrapped around her, transporting her to the fireplace in her living room at home.
Carlita and Dimitri anxiously awaited Malena’s arrival and when the green flames dissipated and Carlita saw the state of her daughter, she felt her heart break. “Oh, honey…” Malena rushed forward into her mother’s arms and cried into her shoulder. Dimitri stepped forward and stroked his daughter’s hair, sharing a knowing look with Carlita before turning their attention back to their little girl, not knowing what to do but trying their best to soothe her pain.
“Vamos, mija,” her mother whispered softly as she pulled back and wiped the tears from her daughter’s cheek, “let’s get you upstairs so you can lay down, okay?”
Malena nodded shakily and sniffled, holding on to her mother’s arm to keep her steady as the three walked up the stairs. Milo followed after them curiously, jumping up onto Malena’s bed as she laid down and pawing at her leg. Carlita and Dimitri sat at the edge of the bed, Carlita with Malena’s head in her lap as she smoothed her hair back.
“I don’t know if I can do this anymore,” Malena choked on a sob and held onto her father’s hand, “I can’t—not with them both gone.”
Carlita’s eyes welled with tears as she looked down at her little girl. She couldn’t imagine the pain and trauma Malena was dealing with; her husband murdered and best friend missing. “I know, honey,” she whispered softly, “Princeton was your soulmate and Anastasia was your person. If there was something I could do to change how things happened you know I would, mija.”
“I know,” Malena whispered hoarsely, her sobs beginning to calm and sleepiness settling into her bones. She had no other words to say for nothing could make it better. She wanted her husband, but he was dead. She wanted her best friend, but who knew where she was, or if she was even still alive. Carlita noticed the change in Malena and sighed softly, bending over to press a soft kiss to her raven hair.
“Try to get some sleep, mija,” she whispered soothingly as she pulled the duvet over her daughter before continuing to run her fingers through Malena’s hair, “Papa and I are right here. We’re not going anywhere. We love you, Malena.”
Her mother’s fingers running through her hair paired with the exhaustion following her breakdown made it easy to slip back into unconsciousness. Once he knew Malena was asleep, Dimitri looked sadly at his wife.
“What do we do, mi vida?” Dimitri whispered quietly, “We’ve never seen her like this before…”
Carlita sighed sadly and shook her head, “All we can do is love her through it. We can’t bring Princeton back, and I doubt we’ll be able to find Anastasia,” she looked up at her husband, “she just needs time to heal, mi amor.”
“Funny. I thought rich purebloods were your type.” He said with a shrug trying to get in a dog at the other witch.
And just like that, Malena’s good mood was ripped away. Of course he would think she just wanted Princeton for his money, even though she came from a wealthy background herself. Why else would a halfblood pursue a pureblood? She clenched her jaw and stuck her water bottle in the side pocket of her backpack before walking away from Gaston without another word.
“Excuse me? What about playing quidditch and have an active sex life is gross?” Gaston returned the expression she made. He knew she was a widow but there was a point in time where if she wasn’t on the pitch, she was having sex. Everyone knew about Princeton and Malena getting caught just about everywhere. Which Gaston thought was pretty hot.Â
“Oh it’s not the quidditch and active sex life that’s gross,” Malena popped her gum, “just you.” She couldn’t hold back the snort that fought past her lips.
“How about I kick you in the dick and you can nurse that in private?” Malena replied, her voice saccharine as she looked up at Gaston. She nodded as he spoke about the beater records.Â
“I’m sure you will,” Malena buzzed her lips, “if you can keep your head in the game and not between some girl’s legs.”

“Such hostility,” Gaston pivoted his body away from her to protect his family jewels. “Why do I need to choose between the game and sex?”
“Would you like to be benched for the rest of the season, Vidia?” Malena snapped at the taller girl as she tied her hair up in a ponytail, “I’d be much more enthusiastic if you lost your ability to speak.” With that, Malena puffed out a breath through her nose and ordered the team to huddle up. They went through their strategies and tweaked them as necessary. She straddled the broom and nodded to a teammate to let the snitch and other balls fly.
“Oh!” Malena piped up, “By the way, instead of an hour practice today, we don’t stop until I say so. Be sure to thank Vidia for that.”

“You need me,” Vidia sang as she moved with the rest of the team in the huddle. She had her bat tucked under her arm as they went over the plays. And when the balls were released, Vidia hopped on her broom and gave her bat a fanciful swing. “You’re welcome, guys. We might actually win for once.”
"We have plenty of beaters," Malena narrowed her eyes at Vidia as she hovered off the ground, "there's only one seeker." With that, practice began. They ran plays and perfected them as needed. About halfway in, Malena called a time out and flew to the center of the pitch.
"We need to figure out different positions for the chasers, because this isn't working," she pinched the bridge of her nose.
“You can nurse my pride in private,” he said with a smirk. He knew she wouldn’t take him up on it. And his comment might warrant a bit shot but he couldn’t resist it.
“It’s a pretty high bar to reach,” he commented. “We have distance records for beaters. I’ll break one someday.”
“Hardly,” he said rolling his eyes. “Gaston doesn’t get jealous. And my ego is fully intact and unwounded.” Gaston looked away from the spectacle and shook his head. “Look at who is riding on that winning high. Ten minutes, huh?”
“It’s okay, Gaston,” Malena patted his back sympathetically, “you can nurse your pride in private later.” She adjusted her quidditch bag on her shoulder and pulled her water bottle out before taking a sip. She nodded at Gaston’s words.
“Technically, less than ten minutes,” Malena said smugly, “whoever managed to catch the snitch in under three had to have been on something.”
Gaston scoffed as a group of girls drooled over the new Quidditch Director. “It’s all because he has some fancy accent. If I walked around here speaking French, they’d do the same thing. It’s nothing special.”
“Aw, is someone a little jealous?” Malena teased him with a devilish smirk resting upon her lips as she emerged from the Thunderbird locker room, “Is the lack of attention wounding your man ego?”
