recurring dead wife flashback where it becomes increasingly apparent that the person remembering her has dishonestly claimed a romantic dynamic to their relationship that never actually existed and erased any conflict that ever existed between them now that she's no longer able to say no to them
dead wife flashback where each time we see her she looks more confused and upset by how she's remembered, then desperate and furious, until she's hammering on the glass screaming to be let out
this isn't how it happened. you know this isn't how it happened. but you still keep coming back, keep disturbing my grave so you can play out your fantasies. voyeurs crowding around my autopsy, straining for the best view; pawing through my entrails like grubby butchers trying to find some golden meaning in blood and shit because you can't bear to face the cold light of truth. you just can't bear the thought of never having really known me at all.
What if everything gets better in 2016
Grace asp telling Rocky that he used to sleep under/stay up all night watching the stars.
Rocky losing decades of stress and tension when he realizes Grace has been watching over his sleep the whole time, that all of earth has.
Humans have been watching the stars since the dawn of their species, it’s a part of who we are. Not a single Eridian has ever slept without a human, somewhere far away, keeping watch.
Original post by @morallygrayautisticscientist here, this post was so funny I decided to draw it lol.
For those of you who joked about Stratt projecting her period cramps on Grace, I drew that too here.

Would Reverand Daughter Harrowhark Nonagesimus from the Locked Tomb series turn around?
yes
no
she literally lobotomized herself to preserve what remained of Gideon's soul
i like when eridians describe grace in other-worldly, incorporeal, eldritch ways. that he's beautiful and terrifying at the same time. a horror you can't look away from because you don't want to miss a thing.
you can never get a clear listen to him. his primary sense node is covered in "hair" and the part that isn't is hidden by two crystals that refract sound waves in a pleasing but disorienting way. he covers his body in billowy cloth at all times. not snug and sensible and unobstructive like eridian coverings, but loose and layered, draped and flowing.
the most clear part of him are his internal organs. because yes, the alien's carapace isn't sound-proof. his single heart beats insistingly in his core, his lungs exchanging gas constantly, his long digestive tract always bubbling and contracting. his thorax is packed impossibly tight and it's all moving and singing.
and it shouldn't be possible, with how fragile he is, for that internal pressure to maintain. how does the thin membrane of his external organ (another horror that sends eridians reeling) keep it all contained? his "skin" is so easily pierced, cut, bruised, burnt, how does he not split open under his own mass?
when savior rocky first arrived home and described the environmental needs of his alien, the scientists thought he'd made a mistake in his frantic panic to get everything out. it isn't possible this being lives at such low atmospheric pressure, at half the gravity, and in a gas that's nearly double the weight of ammonia. in a gas so dangerous, so caustic. and if it does then how is it obligately terrestrial like rocky claims? shouldn't it fly or float instead? (and then to see it in the water, learning that it can float or sink at will.)
and this alien has come bearing gifts that will not only save your species but launch it into impossible heights of technological and intellectual advancement. he has discovered the solution to astrophage and bred it to thrive on threeworld and translated his instructions into eridian. he has given your people the complete sum of his people's knowledge, advanced in ways the eridians can't believe and behind in ways that seem ludicrous. and he has given his life for your people to have these things.
he knows how your solar system was formed. he knows how the universe started.
his name means beautiful and generous and relieving.
the eridians experiencing cosmic bliss.
be not afraid.
something about a devoted nun Harrow rejecting sainthood and lyctorhood with a medical procedure and something about scholars Camilla and Palamedes choosing lyctorhood by performing a cannibalistic ritual and a double suicide
I am rereading Gideon the Ninth and one of the funniest scenes in the whole book gotta be the scene where Gideon (has never had a hot beverage in her life) knocks back half a cup of boiling tea. And then just stands there suffering in silence. Imagine being Jeannemary Chatur or someone and seeing the super cool and mysterious Shadow Cultist from the Ninth House just absolutely SHOTTING a cup of piping hot tea. and then trying to play it cool. I would lose it.
Modern AU Abigail Pent who is everyone's favourite cookie-baking teacher/librarian/foster mom/therapist or whatnot is a little perplexing to me.
No, that woman is using her generational wealth to fund an academic career where she writes dense tomes on late antique heresies. She and Magnus are only validly married in the eyes of the church because they have a very, very good canon lawyer. They acquired the teens through a dubious international adoption and have maybe not kept them quite as in touch with their culture as they ought. Is she just really into her field of research, or is she dabbling in the occult in a way that requires knowledge of at least two dead languages and at least one archaeological artefact of questionable provenance?
Still a fantastic parental figure to the rest of the cast, willing to go to bat for them in slightly terrifying ways, etc etc but I'm begging you to let her be the "unwholesome" (ch 35) and "problematic" (CIF) person she is in the text.
Cue 800 disaster alarms activating in harrow's brain
The fact that god says “there is no such thing as forgiveness” is actually a very big deal for the Space Catholics and ought to be discussed, probably at length.
Listen, I know it’s not on the list of John Gaius’ Top Ten Worst Decisions, or even on the list of his top 50 worst decisions, but putting the Sixth House, i.e. The Library, i.e. the main hub of the Empire’s knowledge, on the planet closest to Dominicus and therefore most at risk of being wiped out in a solar flare, was perhaps not his brightest moment.
Mini Alecto rant because I think she’s one of the most compelling characters ever written and we don’t even know her that well yet.
We are first introduced to her as the Body in Harrow the ninth (I mean we knew about her before but I’m talking interactively) and she’s basically Harrow’s rock. She has this calm air about her that provides comfort to Harrow. She courts Harrow, has dinners with her where they talk about anything, and prays with her. She’s Harrow’s partner in crime when she agrees with her that Gideon Zero needs to die. She protects Harrow; instructing her to lie. She has no qualms about Harrow’s desperation for her and looks at Harrow with pity when she regrets it. She takes it as her personal duty to save Harrow’s body at the end of htn, performing cpr, because she truly does care about Harrow and that’s what I’m getting at here; she cares about Harrow a lot. She’s also calm, cool, and collected.
Yet all the remaining Lyctors (save for Pyrrha and Gideon) seem to hate her. A lot of them apparently didn’t like her. They call her a monster. Which is a sharp contrast from what we’ve seen so far, in terms of the Body’s likability. Not to mention that Harrow notices that the Body doesn’t seem too fond of John either when she catches her staring at him (god I love that scene where John drops his bag? on her lap and Alecto just keeps staring at him unmoved, I yearn for their story), so like, what happened between all of them? I know Alecto hates necromancy and Lyctorhood but why call her a monster? What did she do?
Then later, this piece of Alecto’s soul, the Body, enters Harrow to become Nona (why Alecto did that is yet to be revealed) and Nona is a stark contrast to it. She’s this bubbly, sunshine person who’s ditsy in an adorable way and who loves everyone and everything. So yeah, Alecto can also be bubbly. That’s until Nona starts remembering who she is. Who’s that you may ask? Oh yeah, the fucking soul of the Earth! I mean, what? Talk about an insane lore drop. She feels for planets when they are shit talked (New Rho, Drearburh) cause they are her family. Isn’t that crazy? She’s a planet. She’s THE planet. The life giving planet. She’s life itself. She’s God.
That’s when the coke starts hitting because she is the soul of the Earth and she was dying and she picked John to save her and that was how he repaid her? By putting her in a body she deems hideous (because she’s not really fond of human beings actually) after wounding her original body? Killing her siblings? Nona’s in the process of remembering all this and loses her sparkle. Nona the six month old. Alecto the 4.5 billion+ year old. Nona grows colder, both physically and mentally, as she remembers herself. She’s fucking disgusted by the state of things. She’s angry. She lets Pyrrha know this. She gets embarrassed. She cries. She’s the soul of the Earth and she’s six months old and she’s hurting and she’s aware she’s killing Harrow and she blames herself for everything; she just wants to die. She finally wants to let go. Look at what trying to hold on did to the universe, right? The bubbly, calm, caring soul of the Earth is also, disgusted, cold, righteously furious, depressed, and is currently a six month old baby having a panic attack while completely falling apart. She also laughs at butt jokes. Atp, your skin starts itching with the need to know more and more about her.
Then she wakes up after ten thousand years, still angry. Angry because John. Angry because she remembers everything she was, everything she could have been, what she is now. Angry as she sees Pyrrha and talks to her. Angry still, as her eyes land on Harrow. She remembers Harrow and something about her irritates, calms, and even pleases her. This being because she realizes Harrow (after biting her lips off) is a descendant of the one person who seems to bring her any sort of peace, a person she, the soul of the Earth, vowed her entire being to: Anastasia. Why is that? She makes the same vow to Harrow because of this fact. She’s unamused by Harrow’s self deprecation but pleased by Harrow’s strength. She forces Harrow to accept her vows despite subtly agreeing that Harrow is too lowly to receive them. Then there is the whole reunion with John where she nonchalantly swords him through the heart with Harrow draped above her other hand. What I’m trying to say is: Alecto is fucking cold, detached, bossy, and swaggy. Which is, yet again, an insane contrast to her other two personalities.
Not to mention she screams blood and flesh and the sound comes from every part of her body. All this while you sit with the fact that the Earth is a conscious being that is fully aware of herself, her skin, and her body; with the ability to grant godlike gifts to fucking randoms, who are also her. Plus she speaks in old english. That’s sick.
…
Tldr: The whiplash from seeing the caring and comforting Body and Nona also be the same cold, detached, angry Alecto is what captivates me. They all seem so completely different from the other but they are all her. I guess she’s responsible for creating 11 billion unique souls too so this isn’t hard for her but that idea alone is equally insane. The fact that she’s the soul of the Earth is insane. People don’t freak out enough about her character. She’s enthralling. I need the next book so bad it physically hurts.
My new ADHD med isn't doing shit be I was gonna take a shower and then I saw someone call Jod Wake and the Lyctors a "six person polycule" and got in my head about whether they're one hexacule or two throuples and spent three fucking hours making this:
Also I guess it's a sequel to this thing
Gideons first interaction with both of her parents is the two of them fighting… the poor girl she’s been conscious for the first time in nine months to watch a six person polycule all of whom were involved in her conception absolutely implode.
The opening of the fight in question:
Dad: “now, we both know I'm an upstanding guy who would never stoop to torturing you for intel, but you are tied to a chair and I am immortal so like, I can wait for you to be reasonable for a very, very long time :)”
Mom: “I CHARGE YOU WITH ACTS COMMITED WITH INTENT TO DESTROY, IN WHOLE OR IN PART, THE HUMAN RACE—”
Just amazing how all of this came about: nine months on the [Erebos, then the Mithraeum], where Harrow begins her journey into Lyctorhood by vomiting constantly, refers to the sword as "your large steel infant," (pg 31), and while God is explaining what happens to a planet's soul when a planet is murdered, how the revenant is created, she has what might be her first(?) menses (pg. 42).
Harrow goes on to experience constant assault that could be coded in a certain way familiar to a lot of young women attacked by older men (Mercymorn: "What did you say, to make him try to kill you?" (pg 191).
Later she experiences the very unpleasant imagery generated by the Sleeper's pregnancy (and all the failed attempts) while in the River bubble (where she is guided by another mom-coded figure), unaware this is referring to her Gideon, whose mother has been haunting her from that "large steel infant" and once Harrow vacates the premises (her body), Gideon finally emerges and gets a front-row seat to this shitshow where she literally comes out of a closet.
Oh, and Mercymorn who keeps regressing Harrow's age as we count down to the birth of a new character?
Being a mother in this series is a real...well.
Pg. 42, the blood running down Harrow's leg is from cutting into her thigh with her thumbnail- while John explains the consequences of murdering a planet. Can be read as symbolic of the loss of innocence as she is burdened with- one might say metaphorically pregnant with- this new knowledge.
