One of the compelling things about Project Hail Mary is that you can't fix it.

"What if Stratt didn't force Grace to go?" Then the Earth dies.

"What if Yao and Ilyukhina had survived?" Then they all would have died in space, not enough food to get to Earth or Erid

If the Taomoeba hadn't escaped then Grace would have never seen his best friend again. Returning to a world he loves but no longer recognizes.

If the stars weren't dying then Grace never would have met his best friend at all. Living content but alone.

Project Hail Mary is a hopeful story. It is a story of friendship and what it means to be brave. It's a story about saving the world.

But you can't remove the tragedy of the story without making it unrecognizable. It's written into the bones.

Some thoughts on Oxalis’s family

- they were from a full clutch, and their parents had another almost full clutch after them, so they have 8 siblings total

- they have three parents, in a mated set, so only 3 of their siblings are biologically full siblings

- it’s a relatively big family, even for Eridian standards

- one of their parents was a stay at home parent

- they’re closest with 2 of their clutch mates and 1 of their younger siblings

- Oxalis and the younger sibling they’re closest with were the only ones to go into the sciences

- several of their siblings have mates and children, and Oxalis spoils those kids whenever they see them

- Oxalis is quiet by nature, but none of their family is bothered by that. They’re happy to let them sit off to the side

- Oxalis is not always there for the big holidays (at least not for very long), because it can be a lot, but they always send gifts and cards

- one of their clutch mates they’re close with has 2 mates, and had a clutch during the astrophage crisis. Both they and Oxalis had several breakdowns about their (the kids) future

- Oxalis is a lurker in the family GC. They never say anything unless directly mentioned but they read all of it

Sketching the first few babies out. I have a lot of problem with the mates bc i have no idea on how to make them interact in a cute way and I've been watching cats couple to give myself ideas.

And I'm also working late into the night.. so can't doomscrooll and draw them as soon as I thought (still have to sketch 2 more designs)

But in terms of the timeline - the eridians had no idea about light speed and relativity. They thought they could just keep accelerating forever, getting faster and faster.

So their timeline for the mission was what? 20 years? Maybe?

But Rocky was in space alone for 50. And assuming equal ish distance from Erid to Tau ceti as from earth, the travel time would be another 26ish.

So a mission that was supposed to take 20 years took 76. For at least 50 years, there had to have been no hope.

Erid was dying, and there was nothing they could do.

Everyone and everything that has ever been was going to die.

And there was nothing they could do.

Thinking about the fact that while Erid definitely had more time, their mission was also gone so much longer than they were expecting.

Erid did not come out unscathed

They might not be ‘half of the world is dead and anything too far from the equator is practically uninhabitable’ bad but still.

I saw someone post about grace’s dome not being the first of its kind, about entire cities being enclosed, and I honestly think that yea. They had to have done something.

Mostly thinking about my OC Oxalis, and their work as a botanist. The rush to preserve the extremely rare high altitude plants they work with, because those would be among the first effected.

How much of Erid was lost? How much of their land made uninhabitable, their species now extinct?

How do you think Rocky must have felt? Coming home to a world fifty years closer to total extinction?
