So I found myself inordinately impressed by Nicki Minaj’s Anaconda, primarily for its overtly obvious sampling and its poppy implementation of repetition, repetition and repetition.

Like Eliot channeling Milton in the Wasteland, Anaconda is a willful distortion of a frequency that exists independent from the artistic endeavors of Sir Mix-A-Lot (knighted by Trochanter the Greater?) or Nicki Minaj, or anyone who comes before or after them. Through the extensive, insistent sampling the castrated line loses its context in the alliteration of da-don’ts that the cutout point brings forth; the song exhausts the mechanisms of omission and makes a great big point in doing so.

Nicki Minaj doesn’t attempt to humor the listener’s intelligence with seemingly subtle nostalgic references, instead she parades the repeated sample with formidable intensity, so that the borrowed anaconda soon implodes upon itself, transcending both its dated euphemistic implications (by now charmingly sedate) and the patronizing irony of the modern age.

All of this of course is also tightly linked to issues of objectification and empowerment, but it’s not my place to comment on that.

The photo is from the current exhibition of Matisse’s cut-outs at the MOMA (highly recommended), which demonstrably shows the persistence of the abovementioned frequencies, particularly the ones dealing with big butts.
