A fanush, (which is also known as Sky Lantern or paper made hot air balloon) should be a story by itself. That is how I was thinking. May be all creative fanush makers think in this way.
I got the request from one of our association member to make a fanush related with upcoming Bengali new year (1425). I thought, âGhot with daabâ or Mangal Ghot (Kalash) will be the best idea.
Last year, the legendary fanush maker, Mr. Sachin Mukherjee made a fanush with similar thought (Ghot with daab). So, my fanush has to be completely different from him so that no one can draw any comparison.
I was planning to make the Mangal Ghot which will look realistic. Making a ghot (Kalash) is comparatively easier. But making a coconut is difficult. Itâs sish (The Stick which is attached with every green coconut) is more difficult to place it vertically. I had a bitter experience using sticks on Mosquito Fanush in previous event at Milk Colony, Belgachhiya.
I started doing some engineering drawing. With the usage of âSurface Developmentâ technique (A part of Engineering Drawing), I managed to do both the Ghot & Coconut easily.
The biggest problem I encountered is to make a hole on the coconut, which is having a curved surface. after cutting the paper, hole should be a circle. It sounds easy but difficult to make. This time I used my knowledge of âSurface development of intersecting objectsâ technique & made a perfect hole on the coconut. It took almost four hour on computer & 1 hour to mark & cut the coconut fanush.
After combining both part (Ghot & Coconut), I inflated the fanush & observed a bulginess on the mouth of Ghot. The shape was also distorted due to bulginess. So, I started doing different experiments & lastly I used brackets inside the ghot to retain the actual shape. This technique is commonly used in steel fabricated structures.
Checking the curvature of the Kalash / Ghot
During making of Ghot, I decided to use some of the classic Bengali articles so that it becomes a Bengali Ghot, instead of a Hindu ghot. So, I used Classic hand fan, Sankha, Kulo etc. to represent BangalianaâĻ
The glimpse of CAD drawing is given below.
CAD version of Mangal Ghot
As I was involved in releasing the fanush, I couldnât able to take any snaps. So, all the pictures related with Mangal Ghot, I had to collect from others. I am thankful to Mr. P.K. Mallick, Mr. Ashish Kumar Goswami, Ms. Suparna Guha, Mr. Sandip Roy etcâĻ
I am eagerly waiting to see your valuable comments & suggestions. Please feel free to communicate with me to arrange such fanush flying event in your location.
